If we have the open scholarships then no problem bringing in 3 wings, worst of those will probably transfer out after freshman year and we just keep bringing in dudes who can play. Nature of today's game

He hasn’t been admitted yet soooo 🤷🏻‍♂️
Wonder if this lead into his decision to stay at TT and finish the semester, but not play ball. Get the grade/credits in a better position.

as we have seen, basketball schedule has not been good for focusing on academics.

When I hear fans worry about talent eval of a player, all I have to do is look back 3 years. This staff has taken a perennial down team to a #1 Seed in the NCAA. A team with Legit Final Four, National Champion hopes. The day we signed Ayo was the day the rise began and continues into the future. WIth RJ Melendez, Luke Goode and will Mr. Basketball from Wisconsin (Brandin Podziemski) be next ? GO Illini
Well said...Brad and crew know what they are doing. Personally, I pay little attention to the ratings of players we are recruiting knowing that if Brad wants them here, so do I. I would add that all this really began when Trent stayed after the Groce debacle. Trent has been really important to the success of this team since Brad arrived. I remember shaking my head last year having to defend Trent many times when foolish posters would call for his benching.

Maybe we are in the transition phase of 4 shooters/slashers and a PG. Find some guards that like to rebound and throw out a team that can shoot lights out from 3, attack the rim, and Curbelo dropping dimes everywhere he goes. Nobody in starting lineup taller than 6'7." That could be a lot of fun actually. Scoring 95 points a game and giving up 87. It would cause havoc on the opposing team to try and guard, forcing them to sit their posts and playing guards deep on the bench that aren't as good.

Of course, when King Kofi is back next year, it will be well rehearsed for the following year!

Yup. But Illinois has to keep up that Stanford of the Midwest look....🙄
When will that charade end? I thought I heard Josh and Robert Jones work well together? Come on, Bob, the U makes plenty of entry accommodations for all types of students. Athletes should be no different.

Even with the Matic Vesels of the world, this staff has earned the benefit of the doubt from me when it comes to talent evaluation.

Right? Who would imagine that we would have a 1 seed locked up prior to the B1G tournament after where we were just 2 or 3 years ago. I love thinking back to Kofi's visit (with hindsight), I believe it was over Christmas Break, there were no students here, weather sucked (as it does in C-U in Dec/Jan) and we had just dropped a game to a team we shouldn't have. This board was in meltdown mode because there was no way he was coming here.

The staff seems to do a great job of failing fast. Whether Vesel, Spicy G, or even Mark Smith, they seem to have no trouble moving on if it isn’t a fit. And for every Vesel they seem to find a Giorgi.

Also, FWIW, it does look like Vesel is playing professionally somewhere. I have no idea what level, but someone thinks he’s good enough at basketball to pay him to do it.

Haha, you are correct. You've been around message boards long enough to know that when we lost a recruit, posters would say it was because he could not clear our admission standards. Maybe this smoke on Burnett is that he is not coming here so he hasn't cleared admissions. Boy, I hope not!!.

Anyone know anything about this new Elevation Prep Reggie Bass goes to?

I watched 2 games on YouTube and it was absolutely terrible. There was literally no offense. Reggie would walk to the wing and stand outside the 3 point line and not move. There were no screens, there was no movement. 4 guys would stand on their spots while one guy would drive or take a 3. Then the bigs would fight for a rebound while everyone else watched. A lot of ole defense too.

I'd lose my mind as a coach, which made me wonder why I didn't hear the coach screaming at them. He should have stayed at Hamilton Heights.
I live in Fort Wayne and work with a guy who was asked to be on staff there (he chose not to). I can't seem to find out much of anything about the place.

For sure they've done an amazing job.

That said, I think Underwood would be the first to admit they're continually trying to improve, and both evaluations and especially recruiting are tough parts of the job. He needs guys who fit and can be challenged. Even when you've set the table, things don't work out, and you have to get used to that.

I think we're in a world where a couple transfers a year is normal. It's a harsh reality of such a competitive sport that rosters turn over for reasons other than graduation. And that's ok when everyone understands how it works. It seems to me that Underwood has a good sense of how he balances the trade-offs to maximize the team (way better than any poster on this board :p ).

The team is a partnership between every single player and the coaching staff. Everyone has to be on board. For that, we owe a lot to guys like Giorgi, Trent, and DMW, who've given so much to the team and its success. Really glad they're seeing the success after putting so much into it. The rise of the program is something they can be really proud of. And when the stars from this team go to the league, everyone will have played a part in their success.

Excellent analysis.

I’m pretty close to 100% certain he’s coming. It just requires more hoops to jump through than it should.
