Now that Frazier's an assistant, can he PLEASE find a clip of him dunking on Michigan (I think it was a road game where he was coming off an injury, fast break dunk over Deshaun Sims maybe)??

For real though, always nice to bring in one of our own!

What have you seen before? Wasn't the last alum we hired Jerrance Howard? That was a pretty good hire. Do we have a history of giving undeserved chances to alums I'm not thinking of?

We have a message board history of wanting unqualified alums over established candidates, so this anti-Frazier theme is interesting to me.

I know we all have a sour taste in our mouth from the Bruce Weber experience, but I think it speaks volumes about Chester that Weber hired him as a full-fledged assistant coach just 3 years after he graduated, at the P5 level no less. It's also interesting to me that Powell and Dee get/got so much more coaching buzz/hype on here than Chester even when the latter's resume is arguably better than both (definitely with Dee, debatable with Powell). Shows how much our impression of them as players influences our assumptions about them as coaches.

Haha I agree. There's a reason we're a bunch of schmucks flinging !!!! at a wall on message boards and the people in charge of hiring are professionals. We'd have run the ship aground a million times by now.

I don't get the negativity around this hire. Frazier is clearly an up-n-comer in the coaching ranks that VT fans wish they'd kept. He's established himself as a key part of turning around that program, and someone whose story and ability to connect with recruits is a tremendous asset. He's also connected in an area you'd want to have connections. He's relatively young, but I don't see that as a negative, especially in an assistant.

OA was/is one of the best in the business. They fought hard to keep him, but there's only so much that can be done when you're up against one of the deep pocketed blue bloods. Sometimes you have to roll with the punches, and IMO this was really solid. In addition, I like his chances of connecting right away with the guys we have committed, something that really limits the damage from losing OA and Chin.

I don't think the negativity is directed at Frazier, who should be a great addition. After Whitman threw untold millions at Antigua and all the talk about competing with the blue bloods, I think a lot of us were hoping for a higher profile hire. I'm hoping the next hire has more of a national profile. If Frazier is the exciting one, I'll be disappointed.

Who would be considered an "exciting" hire as an assistant coach? Would that be a hire that you know their name? A coach that commands a high six figure salary? A head coach that got fired from somewhere else and got a job as an assistant?

The assistant coaches are supposed to be an extension of the head coach and they do the recruiting grunt work.

BU hired a guy with Big 12 and ACC coaching experience, who's young, is from a basketball rich area of the country and has formed relationships through the years of his coaching career. If they paid him 1M a year, would he then be exciting?

I think that we've gotten waaaay too tied up in this assistant coaching search. At the end of the day, this is BUs ship, he knows the direction he wants it to go and he'll hire who he feels fits best. Now, not sure that it's exciting, but it's good business practice.

I love this hire. Chet is the kind of guy who will absolutely get sh*t done, and he's a hungry learner. He'll sponge up everything Underwood can teach him, and do all the heavy lifting we need for building relationships and recruiting. He's living the dream, and I'm loving it! This could get really, really fun to watch.

this. I'm just a random fan and I am open to being pleasantly surprised but, having climbed this far up the mountain out of the wasteland that Weber and Groce left us at, I am leery. Just saying. A more experienced coach with a longer track record and more proven recruiting success would have sat better with me. Time will tell. I hope for the best.
