I don't understand why you lumped Harris in here, unless you believe him to be overrated by recruiting services, and am not sure what expectation-setting Underwood has done to warrant the opinion that "we can do better." Guy is a consensus top 100 recruit and is almost exactly in line with the 3 freshmen that joined the team this year. Going solely by rankings, Epps is a recruit of our caliber at top 70, but Harris is not at top 100?? We've had a total of 4 consensus top 50 recruits across (essentially) 4 recruiting classes for Underwood. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
I assumed he meant Bass and Storr.

The Big Ten only considers adding schools who are members of the AAU. None of the three schools mentioned are AAU members. Their academics are not up to par with existing Big Ten schools. Interestingly, Nebraska is no longer a member of the AAU but was when they were admitted.

This is in addition to the fact that those schools don't add enough TV sets to move the needle. Houston is a huge market but UH is small potatoes compared to UT and TAMU.

College football is more fun when Miami is cheating and college basketball is more fun when Memphis is cheating.

I don't think it's going to happen, but an expanded Big 12 with Memphis, Cincinnati and Houston would be a heck of a fun basketball league to watch.
Their academics are nowhere near good enough for admission to the Big Ten.

Have we all dismissed the idea that Kofi was never leaving? That it was all a PR hype stunt?
he’s still not getting any love on mock drafts for next year either- so if he ends up making over $1M in NIL this year we may even have him for another season.

If he can make more in college than as a late second round pick or G-league, it has to be appealing to stay for guys like him that are superstars in college

For his sake, I hope he dominates this year, shows some shooting range and becomes a lottery pick, but if he doesn’t - it would be awesome to have him another year

Agreed. Harris looks like a stud (solely from his highlights - of which there are a lot available).

Yeah I mean I only meant once he withdrew from the draft. I have no doubts in my mind that he was sincerely exploring the draft, I meant the transfer portal

This is why we, as fans, should do what we can to make it worth his while to stick around. If Kofi is putting out gear this season, I'm buying.

OK, I think I got this. If Ayo the NBA professional signs a two-way deal, Kofi the amateur may end up making more than him ... right?

Correct- NBA min salary this year is about $920K a 2 way deal would be worth half that for the season. So top college players are likely to earn more than that, but it will be interesting to see. Alabama’s QB certainly will, but that is football

  1. Remember when we recruited Giorgi Bezhanishvili? He was ranked in the high 300s and there was a lot of consternation. It didn't seem to hamper his decision to come here, join the team, make a name for himself, and eventually get invited to an NBA summer roster against all odds.
  2. No one here is taking unreasonable potshots at the kid. They're discussing a rumor that the staff cooled on him because he was recruited by the former staff and/or because he has some attitude issues. It's not like anyone is being malicious here.
  3. I doubt recruits spend much time keeping up to date on the message boards for the schools recruiting them. There is anecdotal evidence that they are aware of and perhaps occasionally look anonymously once they are on the team, but doing this for multiple boards for multiple schools recruiting you seems like a stretch. We are not as important as we sometimes like to think.
  4. If a recruit is basing their decision based on what the message board fans are saying as opposed to what the coaching staffs are saying and where they can thrive on the boards, I don't really want that recruit anyway. If the school is the right fit but the loco internet fans aren't believers, come prove them wrong. (This line of reasoning has limits. Actual online abuse should be off limits and absolutely a dealbreaker. This here is not abuse; it's discussion.)
“No one here is taking unreasonable potshots at the kid” is not true. The attacks on an 18 year old who wants to play for my school is disheartening to me (not referring to you, sacraig). Now all of the blog tough guys can post gifs of me crying since that is what we do here nowadays. I will sign off until football season.

Last year had special rules for the 2-way contracts. They paid 1/2 of the NBA minimum. This is not true in general. The pay cap on a two way contract appears to be ~290k this year. It can pay as low as $82k if the player never makes the NBA roster.

How it works: The 2-way contract this year pays 82k. The player gets a pro-rated amount of the NBA minimum salary if they make the NBA roster. They are limited to a maximum of 45 days/year on the NBA roster (~25% of the season). This caps their salary at 920k*25% + 82k*75% = ~290k.

One advantage of taking a 2-way contract, is that it counts as a year of experience. This impacts the minimum pay for future contracts.

As per my previous post, what little evidence I have found said that 2-way contracts can only be used on undrafted players, or otherwise unrestricted free agents.

A lot of people on here are missing the point that Ayo can make money off of his name too, since ya know he's a professional and all. I guarantee he sells a large chunk of jerseys.
I'm not sure to what degree pros profit off jersey sales with their name. They get something for sure, but I think I've read it's a pretty small percentage. I imagine Ayo's profits from his name will be a lot bigger if he makes the NBA roster vs if he ends up playing the majority of this season in the G league. In any event, i don't think it's a stretch to think that Ayo as a college player of the year candidate would bring in more $$$ than Ayo as a 2nd round draft pick and possibly NBA role player (at least in years 1 and 2). It's all new and hard to say what happens, but I kinda doubt Ayo makes $1 million this season. Kofi could. Kofi could also make like $80k. I really don't think we know yet.

Re: Discussion on whether negative posts can impact a recruits decision.

I agree that the message boards debates are by those who have no say in matters, and often no knowledge. This isn't how everyone takes it. Aaron Jordan's dad (rjcord1) used to get quite worked up by responses on this board and by all appearances he was a very well balanced, mature, person. At one point I wrote an explicit reminder to him that the people here are armchair quarterbacks blowing off time. Their opinions should not be taken seriously. It had not sunk in for him. He referenced the post later as he tried to ease up.

wrt. the specific arguments, there is a difference between "can impact a decision" and "will impact a decision". It is easy to find anecdotal evidence against almost any non-absolute statement (e.g.#1). If you had two job offers, that you really could not decide between, and you had read one positive forum and another "contentious" forum. Might it influence your decision as an 18yr old kid?

I'm not saying that the discussions should be banned. I'm pointing out a possible consequence, and hoping that such comments become references (e.g. we may have backed off of <player> due to <reason>) vs. a repeated 'fact' across pages/weeks without actual knowledge of their truth.

According to Hoops Rumors, several 2nd round picks have already signed 2-way contracts - Aaron Wiggins being one.
