I read something recently to the effect that Jud Heathcote's Spartans played virtually nothing but zone. Anyone recall that? I do recall in the late '70s and early '80s that Bob Knight was an anomaly in insisting on man-to-man 100% of the time.

Izzo brought football to the basketball court when he came to Michigan state and he complains about someone backing someone down. Give me a break. Izzo is the biggest whiner about officiating when he loses next to coach K. If he had the biggest, baddest guy on the court he wouldn't complain.
He sat on Jud Heathcote's bench at MSU as an assistant for a dozen seasons. That's where he learned his craft and methods.

I would never watch anything with Bill Walton. All you have to do is listen to his color commentary on the Arizona/Illinois Elite 8 game that his son played in and you’ll immediately want to punch him in the face the next time you see him.
Fair enough. I’m no Bill Walton fan. I agree his commentary is usually down-right excruciating ….(and that’s even when he’s attempting to be objective.) No argument here…merely meant that maybe his acting would be SO bad and laughable it would almost be good..,if you know what I mean?…like a lot of campy cult movies tend to be.

Very different game now With the 3 pt shot and type of athletes. is there any other team that plays a lot of zone besides Syracuse?

This board has more behind-a-keyboard face punching than I've ever seen. There'd be 4 punches from any of these athletes who keyboard tough guys want to punch. Him hitting you. You hitting the ground. And him hitting you 2 more times while you are down.

Takes away my thought of Mrs. Van Wormer being NL #3.

NL 3 may not like that.

On the other hand, perhaps she would be intrigued…….

You obviously haven’t listened to that game. And lighten up Frances.

Belo is certainly not Trent, but his advanced stats as a defender are consistently really good. In fact, better defensive stats than offensive stats, which helps explain why BU gives/gave him a longer leash despite his sometimes erratic play on offense. He couldn't hold up to Mulcahy's post moves like Trent could (for instance), but he's a pest that generates steals and prevent straight-line drives to the hoop. Problem is his offense has been a huge negative so far this year. If he can figure that part out down the stretch run, I think that will be enormous for our closing lineups.
Belo is a good defensive player. Fantastic rebounder for his size. Anticipates really well. Sometimes a bit overzealous, but you’d rather have a guy over-competing.
The shots Walker was getting were shots we were willing to live with. We didn’t want Brown or Christie going off. Usually guys don’t make 100% of their 15-18 footers. He was just locked in.
Trent did take him on the final possession.

Fixed it for you, in case you are new around the interwebs.

I've been looking for Dainja the last couple of games. Saw Hutch but didn't see him. Is he traveling with the team?
I think only one redshirt can travel at a time. At least it was when Hutch and Grandison reshirted togther.

TY! I'm all over this.

And you can employ it for just one or two defensive stands if you like. Give them a new look. Something new to think about. Occasionally it's nice to shake things up just a bit.
I HATE to post this, but in the second overtime of the Houston/Wichita State game, Cheater Sampson switched to a zone for one possession and it threw off WS’s rhythm, leading to a turnover trying to force it inside. It won them the game.

Just one interested observer’s opinion… Andre Curbelo has an uncanny ability to anticipate player movement (both teammates and opponents) and ball trajectory. He’s the best at this than anyone who’s ever worn an Illini uniform, and I don’t think it’s even a close call. Plus, he has the quickness to then make incredible things happen.

If you haven’t done so already, do yourself a favor and go to the Illini Report youtube page, and watch the “Belo calls a clearout” clip, to see one example of him orchestrating an entire play in his head, then making it happen. He does stuff like this almost every game.

Does he have growth and improvement to make? Does he need to dial certain things back a notch or two? Of course he does - he’s basically had the equivalent of just one season to work on honing his game at the college level - and that as a player off the bench.

If he gets and stays healthy, though, I can easily see multiple triple-doubles, along with league-leading assists & steals in his future. Oh, if only he could develop an outside shot…

Fanboy out.

Yes, he has an incredible basketball IQ. He sees things that virtually everyone else misses.

Head of nail hit.

Doing color can s a really hard job. You have to give opinions on the fly, and not go overboard being critical or favorable to either side.

Everyone seems to hate everyone, other than Robbie Hummel… Even our own get trashed here.
He did about 30 bits on running pick and roll, talked endlessly about how Kofi was slow and easily winded by Michigan State running the court, and twice congratulated the wrong Illini player on the same 3 point field goal (which takes some effort).
He's trash.

I think his outside shot exists but it is like option #8 in his bag right now. I think next year he's really going to have to take at least a couple of them a game, given Plummer, Trent, and Grandison (most likely) won't be back. Some of that slack will get picked up by the current freshman class and CoHawk.
I love the way he plays the game on both ends of the court, and can't wait to see him with a year that's not concussion/COVID impacted.

I do like Hummel, don't mind Bardo at all, love Vitale (get better soon), and always enjoyed Billy Packer. Fran Fraschilla has his moments too even if he gets repetitive.
It's a hard job but listening to Jay whine about his Twitter feed while he's calling a game? C'mon.

Agreed. I didn't mind Jay Williams... he's not perfect, but I don't mind a little variety in who is calling the games. Benetti/Hummel is my current favorite... also have a soft spot for Raftery.
