I think White's seat was getting pretty warm at Florida. Middling results at a place where they expect to win titles. If White can get Georgia to mediocrity, that would be a big step forward for that program. They've only made 3 NCAA tournaments in the last 20 years & haven't made it out of the 1st weekend since 95'-96.

Seems like the kind of stop that could de-rail a high level up and comer's trajectory. Probably a better fit for a decent, veteran coach who is looking for some stability. It is very weird, since they are the same conference and huge rivals in football, but it makes a bit of sense if you dig deeper than the optics.
Though to be fair - an up and comer really has nowhere to take that program but up. Seems like a low risk job for anyone really

This is a more realistic list for them. I didn't really see many people on their boards that really thought Underwood could happen. Saw a lot of people interested in Tang. Which besides having a great name, I'm shocked no one has called out that a 20 year assistant is very Weberish.

Y... You know that Brad Underwood was a "20 year assistant," right?

Martin out at South Carolina.
He seems like he'd be a great fit for KSU.

Up and comer has upside. White has been ok, but you kind of see the ceiling of what he can establish. Of course you'd want someone with a pedigree like BU or Chris Beard above all else, but Georgia doesn't have a shot at anyone like that.
Mike White was that up and comer when he left La. Tech for Florida. You have to wonder is he one of those coaches that does well at a mid major, but struggles when he gets to a bigger stage or is he one of those coaches that needs a reset and will do better at his next stop.

BACK THE FIRE TRUCK UP . . . I thought only our former AD hired coaches fitting that profile? 🤬

Mike White made NCAA 5 of 7 years at Florida and advanced to elite eight once. SEC record 2nd, 3rd, 4th 5th twice, and 8th twice. Avg record 21-12. Other than Billy Donavan 2 championships 1 runner up and 1 final four Florida has never been a basketball power. Strange step downward by Mike White. Shaka was probably going to be fired so moving to Marquette made more sense.

21-12 average record will get you on the hot seat at Florida. The same average record at Georgia, considering their basketball history, you'd probably get the court named after you.

Billy Donovan was arguably top 5 in history college coach. His sucess during that 15 years at Florida rank up there with coach K, Rick Pittino KY. Hard act to follow. Bill Self did it at Kansas but that is an exception.

NCAA 5 out of 7 years is pretty good. Mike White's replacement might not be as successful.

Lon Kruger (good) Bill Self (great) Bruce Weber (average) John Groce (bad) Brad Underwood (good->great?). Hiring college coaches is a crap shoot. I think GA did well - I would rate White as good.

Not that it matters but why wouldn't Chrissy Collins jump ship to get himself ready to be the next Duke HC (if he is very lucky to have success in his next stop)?

Mark Turgeon just got run out of town with a record about as good... So I guess Florida should give it a few more years before they do that to White.

Also, when you hire a Mid-Maj coach for a P5 job, it is more or less a crap shoot. When you hire a coach like BU from another good P5 school, you chance is better than that. (I did not say that was a guarantee though.)

Florida isn't a basketball school. Nobody heard of basketball in Gainsville until Billy Donovan showed up. Its back to obscurity for the Gators.
It’s the same problem as going to Nebraska or PSU. Basketball a minor sport.

Georgia football = national champs. Florida football has not been good since Urban left.

Not sure if taking the GA job is going to be any better for White. He does appear to be a solid coach. Not many schools complain about going to the NCAAs every year. You get fired for not making the NCAAs.

I am not sure Duke post coach K is a powerhouse. UCLA has never really regained the Wooden glamor. Indiana has not been the same since Knight was fired. UNC was respectable but not the power it was under Dean Smith. Florida post Donovan is good but not great. Georgetown post Thompson has been abysmal.

The outlier is Self replacing Williams at Kansas.
