I definitely hope you are right as I've always kind of pulled for Iowa State as a secondary team behind the beloved (figuring we've got a nice common enemy in that if there's one school that wants Iowa to lose more than us it's the Cyclones), but does Campbell see himself as a lifer at Iowa State? If he's turning down ND, who is he waiting on?

If Campbell goes to Nebraska, I think they would regularly be right about at what I believe our true ceiling can be under Bielema. 8-9 wins and 3rd maybe 2nd in a hypothetical Big Ten West (which is likely gone anyway). I think that should sound appealing to Nebraska fans. I doubt that would be good enough for them though....

I think the issue with Campbell will be whether he’s offered a better job than Nebraska. No obvious candidates as to who that would be at this point.

Some places soured on him (including ISU fans) with a mediocre year last year, given all the talent that returned from that 2020 team. I'll be curious to see how well they do this year. Perfect example of a place suddenly getting too high of expectations among their fanbase and forgetting where they were before he came.

That's interesting. You are right, that does happen often with expectations. But they look to be off to a great start again this year, and if we ever get to the place where a win over Iowa doesn't keep us happy, well...

To be fair to them, there's also a bit of the Dan Mullen Mississippi State thing going on there where Matt Campbell's ascent to coaching superstardom with glittering suitors after him every offseason starts to be more of the focus than Iowa State.

He's both too good to stay and not good enough to make Iowa State something it's impossible for them to be. That will generate friction.

I think this is similar to the thinking behind Leipold as a candidate as well. The difference is just that Kansas is many good hires in a row away from being anything other than a cellar dweller.

I think we all ought to settle down just a tad about Leipold at Kansas who is 2-10 against FBS opponents thus far. Still a mountain to climb there.

For some ungodly reason I've been looking at a lot of the commentary on the firing of Frost online. One big reason mentioned as to why they didn't wait three weeks to can him was that they have the Oklahoma game coming up on Saturday in a national spotlight and didn't want all the coverage to be about Frost as "dead man walking" on a national scale. Also I heard the total payout was $16 million (some type of proration of his salary or something).

I think they are going to struggle getting any coach that they will truely be estatic about, because most of the truely elite players come from urban areas of the country and they just wont get excited about going to the middle of the country , far from any coast or major urban areas. Recruits wont be impressed about the sellout record posted in the stadium and glory years from before they were born. Any new coach will will think long and hard about these obstacles.

It will come down to how much they are willing to pay. If they are willing to be top 10 in salary a lot of people will want to interview

4. Unrealistic expectations of playing for National Championships.

Since they fired Bo Pellini in 2014 for going 9-3 with the exception of one year they have stunk

Mike Riley 6-7, 9-4, 4-8
Scott Frost 4-8, 5-7, 3-5, 3-9, 0-2 fired

Their season is gone. I would have waited until October 1 to fire Frost to save the $7.5M and used the money as a signing bonus or NIL seed money for the new coach.

JMO - I would target Fickell from Cincinnati or Mark Stoops from KY . They both have hit the ceiling at their respective schools and might be open for new challenge. Both are used to recruiting midwest.

yes, its just not a long term fit.
The ISU job is akin to the IU or KSU or Miss St job in many respects.

I read the Husker board Sunday morning, and that was the general consensus. Eat the 7.5 million and get the negative talk behind you.
It was inevitable and they really didnt want to "risk" him beating OU

Frost was unfortunately a good example of Peter principal

Grad assistant at Kansas State(1) , Assistant Northen Iowa (2), Assistant Oregon (7) won Broyles award as top assistant coach, HC UCF (2) won AAC year 2 went 13-0 claimed NC.

He played at QB at Nebraska and won a National Championship - he seemed perfect.

Reality - recruiting was OK, lackluster offense, lack of playmakers and bend but don't break defensive strategy. He never restored the historical Nebraska dominate the trenches and have superior athletes at the skill positions. Total inability to win close games. 4.2 seasons was more than enough to establish the team was not getting any better. Maybe he will join Lou Saban's staff and get rehabilitated as top 20 football coach

If there is one school who would take the upcoming windfall of Big Ten media money and top the market for coaches salary at the expense of the rest of their athletic department, it has to be Nebraska, right?

Notre Dame and Nebraska are a lot alike. Both 20th century bluebloods with a great history struggling to recapture past glory. Nothing special anymore, except in their own eyes.
