Purdue 31, Illinois 24 Postgame

I was really disappointed in the loss today, especially because of how much was on the line. But as the game ended, I was mostly concerned with Chase's injury and felt sorry for him, Sydney and their entire family. What started as a great Senior day for the Brown's, ended in heartbreak.
I hope and pray Chase is OK and makes a full recovery 🙏.

I think this thread is split full of “this are gonna be ok” camp and the “the sky is falling camp”

Couple reasons for the 1st camp.

1. We have had a truly amazing run up until November. More than any of us had seen in a long time. Bret and staff has done more with this team than we thought possible, and with better recruits and deeper rotation, we can do it again, but better. More fuel to the rocket.

2. Michigan just beat Nebraska, now the newest recipients of the Nebraska Curse. So we know they’re bound to lose from here on out. Advantage: US.

3. Chase walked off the field. Hopefully nothing season ending or terrible.

Now some reasons I can see for the 2nd camp
1. Bought into the hype, we truly were a top 15 team in the nation. Now we lose twice and tumble down, will likely lose again next week.

2. This team could have achieved 9-3 or 10-2. But we didn’t have our act together against 2 mediocre teams AT HOME with all the momentum in the world behind us.

3. Just when you start getting casual fans interested, you shove them back out with disappointment.

I would come up with more reasons but I don’t want to be too negative. I sit firmly in camp 1 and have readjusted back my expectations for the season. If someone said “you’re gonna make a bowl” this year when our preseason Win O/U was 4.5, I would have been grinning with delight. Nobody saw coming what this staff and team has done for the fan base.

Anyway, I’ll put my soap box away. Ill enjoy the rest of the season and basketball is back hell yeah.

Or, remember your expectations for this season back in July.

Then fast forward to the worst outcome which will be 7-5 and a bowl game

Are you happy?
One of the worst arguments in sports. Things change and expectations are adjusted to reflect those changes.

Not questioning the effort. Questioning the results. We are not playing the same way we did against Wisconsin or Minnesota the last two weeks.
The wear and tear of the season has taken its toll on our boys. We are thin at some key positions to begin with. Giving and taking a beating wears you down. Add injuries to the mix that grow in severity over time and effort or impact of that effort begins to diminish. The boys continue to give their all. You can see the emotional pain in their faces when they lose. As for the coaches, I believe they have done a masterful job of getting the boys ready to play as was reflected in the results in the early-mid part of the season. The boys have become frustrated as they wear down as was demonstrated by the penalties yesterday. Despite all this, but for a bad PI call against Witherspoon at a key point in the game, we may have managed to win the game.

Illinois football is my sport. Nothing else matters nearly as much. I despise the "bring on basketball" comment. I'm hurting and disappointed but, at the same time, proud of the boys and the season they have had.

Three more opportunities. I'll be with you today, tomorrow and until I draw my last breath.

GO ILLINI!!

This to me is where the wheels could come off. We were amazingly healthy on a very thin team, but it’s trending in a bad direction.
My only solace is that we did win at Nebraska. I had a premonition we would lose that and go into the Northwestern game at 6-5, on a four game skid. At least we have the bowl game secure, and won't have to watch us being dismantled in Indy.
Hope we can see some improved line play next year.

I agree but the expectations also got very unrealistic (playoff talk etc). If you’ve been watching us, the idea of our being a playoff team is absurd. I’m upset we lost, especially two in a row against mediocre teams but are we really significantly better than them?

It seems like our D line was getting great pressure in the first 8 games and it made a lot of other things go better. I'm wondering if MSU and Purdue just found some ways to counter and we haven't adjusted.

Proud of what we've accomplished. If we could end 9-4 I'd be elated.
Yup. The roughing penalty on Newton was out of frustration from being bottled up all game. We rarely got pressure this week and last week. Seems like we haven't been sending as many blitzes and been dropping more players in coverage. Lots of over pursuing on run plays lately too. Cut back lanes have been wide open last 2 weeks.

Not necessarily. Did your adjustments reflect reality?

We're a good team. But we were overrated based on building up a great record against mediocrity.

Truly the only win where I'd leave saying "These guys are really good." was the dominant win at Wisconsin. Every other win has been good but hasn't had my expectations elevated to the point where I would expect to beat Purdue. Predict that? Sure. But I knew it could be tough. It was.

One other thing I'd like to say while it's still true (honestly, I'm aware next week's game may drastically change this). Say what you want about how upsetting the games have been the past two weeks, but even with those two games included, Illinois has entered the 4th quarter ahead or tied in every game except one this year. They've lost every game they've lost by one score, and had a chance late in two of the three games to tie the score (however slim those chances were). The Illini have played in some of the most exciting games I've attended in the past decade. People have stayed to the end of every game (the talk about people leaving with like a minute left tonight aren't fair; fans stayed until about 1:04 left in the game). BB is doing wonderful things. He's trying to make Illini prominent, and it may be the toughest jobs in college football today.

This is NOT the "Illini of old". We say it because there are times it feels like it, but there is really no statistical or even "eye-test" that seems to indicate that.

Anyway, on to Michigan!
Yeah the majority of the crowd stuck around until Purdue converted the 4th down with under two minutes left that basically sealed it. Some folks with families left earlier.. it was cold. The constant ragging on the crowd just feels very"Illinois" to me. Folks who say oh no we suck again every play on these boards, also saying the crowd energy isn't good..lol

Extremely disappointed with everyone associated with Illinois Football today.

Monumental, program altering let down. Other than post-Michigan game 2000, I can’t remember a more disappointing season in the history of this team.

Starting with Whitman, who is and will be the greatest AD in school history. Disappointed in how he props up his OC and DC after not even seeing a full season from the OC. Needs to be more Jim Crane and less Ron Guenther.

Bret Bielema: Poorly motivated program. Even more poorly disciplined team.

Ryan Walters. More time buying his own hype and listening to the back slappers.

Barry Looney Jr: Continued lack of creativity. Add another year to the extension after this game. Who says no?

Players: Will never criticize college kids so passing any judgement or criticism of our players. I’ll leave that to the Jared Gelfond/anonymous message board/Rob Rosenthal types.

Brian Barnhardt: Not getting it done on the radio any longer.

Gene Honda: Missing spots and calls left and right

Fans: Showing up late and leaving early all season. Deserve what the bowl committee has lined up.

Parking lot attendants: Not organized

Illinettes: No coordination , dated routines

Band and Barry Houser: Same ol song and dance since 1999.

Illinois Marketing Executive: How can the stadium be so quiet during the game? Why does it look as packed as 2015 vs Middle Tennessee St?
Well, I guess this just about covers all bases.

If things change and expectations adjust, they can adjust again.

We aren’t a playoff team that could (realistically) contend with UM and tOSU.

And we aren’t Penn State state who is one wrung down but can take care of the rest of the B1G as well.

We are one of the other mid level teams that could lose to any of the other mid level teams on any given Saturday. That should be your new expectation. Thankfully, we are not a bottom dweller.

I think the only issues between a lot of our fans is that some have gotten to the “my expectations are we are mid level and have met if not exceeded those expectations” sooner than the ones still grasping “we were Penn State level and should have been able to win the west”.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m disappointed our luck or D or whatever ran out of juice basically one game too soon, as winning the west would have been amazing.

But 7-5 or 8-4 is still gonna be sweet victory compared to the Illini football I’ve gotten to root for basically my entire life.

3 weeks ago our coaches were the best in history and now some of the people on this post want to get rid of some of them. This football team is not very deep at any position and have played 10 games with several players playing a large number of minutes, maybe they are getting worn down.

If this is how you feel at 7-3, how have you survived the last 15 year without committing Illini football suicide?

If we lose out and go 7-5, it is a replay of 2011 and will leave a sour taste in everyone's mouth. Sure, we'll make a crappy bowl, but so did Lovie once. It will be harder to argue to recruits (and casual fans) that a sea change has occurred. 8-4 will be satisfying upon reflection and a halfway decent bowl couldn't hurt recruiting, but the opportunity that was lost will always be disappointing. On the other hand, getting waxed by tO$U in Indianapolis on national TV is not exactly a resume builder, either.

All that being said, if Illini football can achieve 8-4 this year and make it a common occurrence, I think we'd all be satisfied.

other teams Defenses are now routinely stuffing Chase on first down and we are then getting 2 downs to get 9,10 or 11 yards for a 1st.

Our O line seems worn down . TDV not getting much time at all .

these are all things that come with other teams getting lots of film on us , and our roster being thin . in retrospect , none of this should be surprising .

it’s disheartening for sure . I expected us to win both these past two games , just like I expect a W in Evanston . I still have expectations , but we raised them up WAY WAY to quickly 3 weeks ago . a 12 game schedule is a grind , and things tend to show “truth” 2/3 of the way thru.

and TDV is not the same scrambler that he was 4 weeks ago . we miss that aspect of his game on these constant 3rd & 6’s we face , series after series .

I'm not trying to saying that there is a league wide conspiracy. But the fact is we've had one game ripped away as a win and another (today, with the same crew) that you could argue was taken as well (as either FloridaMan or AutoPoster has laid this out quite well already).

On top of that, just off the top of my head, there have been several other instances through Illinois sports history that have had lasting impact into the Illinois fans' psyche:
-Playing at Kentucky in the NCAA tourney back in the 80s leading to the rule that teams can't play in their own cities.
-End of game reviews in basketball after the Miami debacle several years back.
-I don't think this one led to any changes (could be wrong) but the Michigan/Illinois football game back in 2000 (2001?) was affected with I believe two blatantly wrong fumble/nonfumble calls.

I can see why people would throw it out there as a possibility, as ridiculous as it might be.
I am so tired of hearing the Indiana game was “ripped away” from Illinois because of refs. There were 38 minutes of game time left to overcome the bad call. We’re not talking a call in last 3 minutes of game or the last quarter, or even the second half. And they did overcome to take the lead early in 3rd quarter. The 3 turnovers and inability to score deep in red zone in last 28 minutes of game and allowing a 12 play, 75 yard drive in under 2 minutes for a TD at end of the game are what “ripped away” an Illini victory.

Last two weeks have been tough. We all wanted the ride to continue and it didn’t. Team and program made strides and hopefully this is a foundational year for a long run of success. Despite yesterday’s loss, I am more optimistic about the program now than I was last year at this time. And light years more optimistic than I was 2 years ago at this time. I’d be curious to know how many of the posters now coming down hard on the team were some of the posters who in previous pregame threads were predicting huge victories and admonishing posters who didn’t share their over the top optimism.

It sucks to have some realistic hope and not see the ultimate success that you want. But it’s much better than no hope at all. And it’s the first step in turning realistic hope into reality.

That was intolerable. That deafening blared over everything - including our band.
Putting the Purdue band where they did just created a sound waive out of the east stands. The overhanging balcony acted as an echo chamber to directionally blast out their sound, while our band was in the open, facing neither stands, with half their sound going up and away. This was a really bad place to put a visiting band. I was in East balcony and never heard the Purdue band play once - because all the sound was funneled away from me.

Every B1G band travels to one road game. Road bands, including ours, play to support their teams. - that's part of the atmosphere. Inviting a band and expecting them not to play is silly. HOWEVER, making it so the road band is dominant is just dumb. I think this is on the DIA more than anyone. They need to put the opposing bands in the horseshoe to balance the sound. Many schools (that sell out) just set up temporary bleachers on the field to do this.

On a side note, our band was playing during live on the field action, which shocked me. That is not supposed to be allowed. The MI were playing right up to a snap multiple times, and played completely through an entire kickoff once. In fact, during the wild snap play, our band was blasting away - which makes it harder on OUR TEAM to hear the snap count. We actually thought the ref's discussion on that one was whether to penalize us for our own band.

Sorry, but I have to push back on this one. If college football - the NFL as well for that matter - is going to utilize replay, then you damn sure better make the right call after the review. The replay was obvious, irrefutable proof of a catch. Hightower not only caught the ball with his hand and arm under the ball as he went to the turf, he came back up, the ball was stripped out by the defender laying on the turf, and Hightower CAUGHT THE BALL AGAIN in the end zone. Not reversing the incomplete pass after reviewing the replay was inexcusable. FULL STOP. These calls affect the remainder of the game. Decisions were made after that missed call regarding kicking FGs or going for first downs as a result of not having that 6 points on the scoreboard. If we had that 6 on the board the final Indiana drive for a TD takes on a whole different - obviously lower - level of importance. To dismiss it and say "yes but we should have won anyway" does not excuse the blatant disregard of video evidence to overturn a blown call on the field that changed the outcome of the game. Again, if you are going to use replay, use it. If you are going to use it only on certain calls, allow coaches one review per half on "unreviewable" calls like the obvious PI. Otherwise quit wasting everyone's time with it.
