The Donors for those schools have so much money….and they will gladly blow it on athletics
Yep, we have number one, almost certainly over and above every SEC school.

Number two. Well, not so much.

I just spot checked Auburn vs. Illinois on wikipedia (so take it for what it's worth).

Our endowment is 3.82 billion. Theirs is 1.05.

This would be a fun chart for someone to create that would give an interesting perspective on the relative capabilities of the alumni/fan base and what is actually happening.

Problem with NIL is that we now have too many cooks in the kitchen trying to play “Big Swingin D***” by influencing the decision based on how much they are donating, have donated or threaten to no longer donate. These kids taking money should also have clauses put into these agreements that they’ll play in post - season games or forfeit a specific amount of money. On the other hand, a kid getting paid $300k-$500k is nothing short of a professional , and with that will come the ire of entitled fans who may otherwise empathize with a true student athlete.
Wait until the agents show up. You haven't seen anything yet.

It's been done over on reddit. There was another one that ranked it by conference averages too. B1G is 4th after Ivy league, SEC (only because of Texas), and Pac 10. Interesting that Illinois is only 9th in the conference too.

Prior administrations have succeeded in p***ing off potential large donors (think Marc Andreessen)

You don't give them enough credit. They have angered a lot of alumni over the last 30 years.
The U of I is in pretty fantastic health considering the way the state government has pulled the funding rug out from under it.

There's a whole cottage industry that has built up around hating academics and academia and its culture - not entirely without justification - but as public universities go I think we've got one we ought to be relatively proud of, and any claims that its intentionally sabotaging athletics look pretty ridiculous at this point.

Lets be real : Endowment money (largely given due to academics) and the amount of it has just about NOTHING to do with how much athletic NIL money a school can generate
Actually, that's not accurate. It absolutely reflects what they CAN generate, but not what they DO generate. That's the whole point. Our rich alumni are putting money into academics. At Auburn, rich alumni are putting money into athletics.

The current administration seems pretty competent. Prior ones....not so sure. There are a lot of UI alumni in influential positions in the tech industry and prior administrations seem to have alienated most if not all of them

I mean not to derail this too far away from football recruiting, but I think you're seeing in the news these days how incompatible the Silicon Valley CEO mindset is with that of a legacy non-profit institution like a Midwestern state university.

The legendary Shad Khan incident was very dumb, but he's not a tech guy and that's pretty much water under the bridge at this point.

Someone like Marc Andreesen has no interest whatsoever in signing an NIL deal with James Brown or whatever. That culture doesn't care about sports, is suspicious at best of formal university education, and doesn't have a very nostalgic relationship with their own background, it's a pretty dry well to be pumping.

The gold mine for Illinois' NIL efforts is us, Illini Nation's boundless poster army.
