TDV was no where near terrible, but did not have a tremendous game specifically taking all those sacks many times he just held the ball way too long.

For me his biggest lapses today were missing IW twice with poorly thrown balls in Q4 when MSU had sold out on an all out blitz. Throw those with some air under them and they are big plays.

Our offense sputtered most of the game. Not been thrilled most of the year with the offense and not sure Lunney is the right guy. I know you need the personnel but play calls so often were head scratchers Not a lot of creativity but again you need the personnel. Very enjoyable season though the likes we have not seen for awhile.

For people mad that the broadcast focused on Leach a lot, what did you expect? If Bielema had passed three weeks ago unexpectedly, the same thing would have happened in the opposite way.

That was a well-called game by the officials, and while it was disappointing that Illinois did not pull out the win, it was fun to see them play in January again. Looking forward to another great season next year!
For the most part, a well called game but the TD call and the no call of targeting really bothered me. Those two effected the game in a big way. The other calls seemed balanced between both teams (called it the same way both ways)

95% of me - Look, All I've asked for the past 30 years of hell is gimme 5-8 wins regularly, the occasional 9-10 win season, the occasional reset 3-4 win season, but bowl eligibility 5 out of 6 years. I'm not asking for CFB playoffs, hell, I'm not even asking for B10 titles. 8-4 and playing a NY bowl? I'll take that every year for the next 30 years.

5% of me - Lost 5 games they really could have/should have won. RZ offense was a mess all year, and need better coaching and talent on the offensive side of the ball.

I'm going to choose to focus on the 95% and feel really good about an 8 win team that looked like an actual program for the first time in a long time.

The announcers said that it wasn’t targeting. I don’t know what they were looking at because there was obvious helmet to head contact but I agree that most of the game was an evenly called game.

can we get a blow up of that MSU receivers foot outside the endline , ala Greg Brady as team photog in the Brady Brunch episode , when they were able to prove the correct call , and can we now get a do over ?

For those to young to remember
Greg wants to join Westdale High School’s football team, but Carol (having previously only raised girls, particularly girls who never do anything more athletic than riding a see-saw) is afraid he’ll get hurt. He joins the team anyway, and in true A Christmas Story-style karmic payoff, fractures a rib and gets booted from first-string. While taking obnoxious photos of his cheerleader girlfriend doing arbitrary cheers at the end of the game for no reason, Greg accidentally snaps an action shot of a receiver’s feet inbounds, giving the coach ammunition to fight the referee’s call and earn a new spot on the team: as team photographer.

Key line: “Coach, the ribs are nothing, it’s telling my mother that’s gonna be painful!”

One of the best parts of the episode is that (we can only assume) Greg’s photo didn’t help his team at all. They mention in passing that it’s “hard to challenge a judgment call” and Mike is all “yeah w/e the coach was happy BUT WHO CARES GREG, TELL YOUR MOTHER YOUR NEWS”. They build an entire episode around this twist and just throw the transitional squares up on screen and move on to an Alice cake recipe gag. The cheerleader never shows up again (probably because she found out those pictures were just to hang on a clothesline in Greg’s room) and Greg says nuts to photography and just rejoins the football team without incident a season later. W/e.

funny stuff

This is where I'm at with it. It was a good season, full stop. Preseason I would've been thrilled with the success the team had this year. It's just bittersweet though too. A few things going the other way and this could've been a truly great season.

Anyways, the future is bright and hopefully this season will be a stepping stone and a benchmark moving forward.

Preseason ESPN FPI prediction -
"Illinois will be favored in just a few games. In fact, the Illini are given less than a 20% chance to win in 4 contests"

Could have been more but this season was an unmitigated success. We just held a ranked opponent to 1/3 of their average ppg without 3/5 of our starting db/s and a new DC, in January.
(Oh and 3/5 of our starting db/s today were freshman, playing against the air raid)

We had a drive to win late 4th without a Heisman level RB, a tx qb on a 1 yr rental and a patchwork o line.

Good season by any illini fans standards even though most of us, including me, were pumped up by delusions of grandeur at mid season. We need more of a mid field to downfield threat from our qb which will also mean we have better and faster receivers. It sounds like we are in the process of improving our receiving core. If our d linemen come back for another year, which they should if they’re smart, we could be solid on defense. Get more consistent at punter (although our punter had a great game today) and we could go bowling again next year.

The very last replay of that play showed there being a wee bit of green between the receivers foot and the endzone, though there has been Bigfoot footage that has shot with less grainy cameras.

Addition: he was in, I just explain it not good

Was at the game… sitting near the west end zone. We lost that game literally by less than an inch, when on 4th and 8 the. Receiver caught the ball with a sliver of green between his foot and the end line.

The last play was ruled a lateral when reviewed so so was a legitimate td. Laterals can touch the ground and be picked up and run with.

I have to say I can’t complain about that call. I thought he was out at first, but after the replays it was very close and the ref was in position to make the call. No way they could have reversed it imo.

It happened directly in front of us and my friend was filming a video. Definitely showed he was in bounds.

Kind of concerned about McCray moving forward. Never was remotely effective this year. Injury really hampered him.
McCray looks like the type of back who needs a great O-line in front of him to excel. Looks great once he gets a hole to get to the second level but can't get there w/o the line.

Good game. At a minimum we showed our defense is legit against a great passing offense. Both lines just ran out of gas and they had us on both sides of the ball most of the 4th quarter. Still think if Tommy hits IW we go down and kick a field goal to win it.

I do like Lunney, but wasn’t his best game today. Just didn’t feel like we called enough quick passes/draws to counteract their pressure. Too many long developing plays left Tommy out to dry.

With all due respect to the coach, it’s a little unfair for our guys. They’ve worked very hard all year. Give us the respect we deserve. A few nice comments would have gone a long way in my book. They barely showed Illini fans. Whatever ESPN.
I think I heard the play-by-play man say that Illinois had the foundation for continued success. I think he's not wrong, and it wasn't a lot, but it was a little something.
