It might have been the hazy IPAs I had in Carver, but I was surprised at how much Illini fans were calling out the refs once I looked online … I remember being really mad about a couple calls here and there but not really feeling like the refs lost us the game. The general consensus among Illini and Iowa fans that I talked to that day was that it was a GREAT game and someone had to lose … even had Iowa fans tell me they thought we were the better team pretty graciously.

There was a run where everything went against us, and there were runs of the same against them. So it was pretty terribly called both ways, albeit fair 😂

Haha, yeah, I was a little disappointed at how nice they were. And agreed, it was generally a mutually positive vibe, and I didn't feel like, other than a couple of no calls I didn't like, we got home jobbed. What section were you in?

Section E, my Iowa friend bought all of our tickets (group of three) as a birthday present for our third friend and when I got there, we were shockingly close. 😂 Row 8.

Speaking for myself, I didn't think we got "jobbed" or "homered". But it did feel like the refs flipped a switch at halftime and decided to call the game a lot tighter..which of course penalizes teams that play aggressive defense. We are one such team. Iowa isn't. It was a great game though. Kinda forgot what it felt like to be in a close game.

Completely agree. I thought the officiating was a non-issue on Saturday. The only call that really seemed to hurt was the non-call with less than 2 minutes left that gave the ball to Iowa after video review; however, with the current rules, the refs had their hands tied. Hopefully we can get the video review rule cleaned up, especially when a non-call impacts who the ball goes to in the last two minutes of the game.

The Illini had many silly reach in fouls in the second half that the refs had to call. Those were ultimately costly, as Iowa lived at the free throw line to stay in the game when Illinois seemed to have all the momentum in the first few minutes of the second half.

Regarding general reviews, I wonder if instituting a challenge system (similar to the NBA) would work. Although I really dislike the game stoppages, as you mentioned.

Agreed. I think this was a large contribution to the loss. We went from an even score with the ball, to having the foul missed, and them getting the ball and a quick 3 the other way.

The matchups will be interesting here. Who does Hawkins guard? Epps probably has to guard Spencer, because he's too small to guard anyone else. And of course it will be Dainja on Omoruyi. I might stick Hawkins on Mulcahy. He initiates the offense and is the main guy responsible for keeping the offense flowing. If Hawkins can use his length to disrupt that, I think we'll be in great shape.

Illini will have to play their best game of the year to beat Rutgers. They are physical, rebound and play tough defense. They keep coming at you even when it looks like they are down for the count. Omuiry is tough inside, they do have some shooters. Hawkins is going to have to show up, quit the stupid passing and ball handling mistakes and put the ball in the basket! Dain is going to have to stay out of foul trouble. Mulcahy is a dirty player and will cause us to foul in response. Hopefully Luke will return and give us some good minutes. I see Rutgers by 6.

Agree, matchups are interesting. Need to stay glued to Spencer but my biggest concern is Mulcahy and Cliff in PnR. Dain’s been more than we could have hoped for this year but so far I feel like he’s struggled to guard in space. Can see Dain getting confused and hesitating and if he does Mulcahy and Cliff will carve us up.

For that reason I was thinking of putting Coleman on Cliff but Coleman on Mulcahy is a really good idea. His length would hopefully disrupt passing and cut off the head of the snake and he can hold his own on Cliff should they need to switch.

I’m hoping whoever McConnell doesn’t guard (TJ or Mayer) goes off. And we could really use a big game from Ty on the boards.

We should really be marketing this nickname more … with how “new” or “corporate” or “flashy” SFC’s look became with the renovation, we could go for some nostalgia when it comes to the arena’s image. Also, it’s really striking how orange our crowd used to look vs. videos of older games. :/

Good point. We pretty much have to assume whoever McConnel guards is going to have a rough night. If I'm Pikiell, I'm putting him on Mayer. TSJ has been struggling, make him beat you.

Dain will probably have a tough time scoring on Omoruyi. So we really need a big game out of Epps and/or TSJ. If Mulcahy is guarding TSJ, expect a lot of flops trying to draw a charge. Hopefully the refs don't fall for it.

Don't take this as hate towards Hawkins, it's not that. I love his game for the most part. It's more aimed at those that feel we got hosed by the refs. But we had our chances. If Hawkins goes 4 for 4 at the free throw line the last few minutes we walk away with a 1 point win. I understand that he missed the last one on purpose.

Yes, that missed pair of free throws really hurt down the stretch. Dainja also split a pair in the last few minutes. However, we still shot nearly 80% from the charity stripe, which is very good for us...not quite close enough to the nearly 90% for Iowa who lived at the line in the second half (though they did miss two free throws down the stretch). Still think we would have won if we did not commit so many touch fouls that led to an early bonus for Iowa in 2nd half (which were rightly called).

100% (well maybe 90%). We have ample time to prepare, we will be rested, Luke will get to play a few minutes, our defense should be able to control them, and although we often don't look as good at home as we should, I think the home court advantage gets us there.
It's funny but I just have a feeling that getting Luke back will help RJ out of his slump for some reason. Maybe it is just wishful thinking.

That's kind of where I'm at right now. As the schedule is winding down quickly, there's really no more room for "ifs" and "when's". At some point, we are who we are. Rutgers is a quality team, but have to be able to beat them at home.

I actually think Dain can score okay on Cliff assuming we get him the ball in the right spots. Cliff is wiry strong but 240 max. Dain should be able to move him with his physicality and he’s got the length to score over anyone not named Zach Edey.

It’s the other end with Dain I’m worried about. Cliff has nowhere near the moves or touch of TJD but is similarly quick and athletic. Not sure Dain can stay in front of him in space.
