I remember hearing a story about Bobby Knight coaching the US national team that MJ was on. He called somebody he knew who worked for the Trailblazers, and said you HAVE to draft this Jordan guy. The guy responded with what you said about already having Drexler and that they needed a center. Knright replied, "WELL PLAY HIM AT CENTER THEN!"The trailblazers had Drexler in Jordan's position and were in need of a shot-blocker and center. So why double up on a position that they already had covered with an all-star? No one knew that Jordan would be the GOAT, or even equal to Drexler. He came from a loaded UNC team where he didn't stand out that much.
I can follow Portland's logic, but, boy, am I glad they didn't follow BPA strategy.
I saw Jordan play maybe 30 times in person and he is the only player who was BETTER than his hype. Every game he would do something inventive that made you say to your neighbor "did you see THAT??" and shake your head. I took my kids every opportunity I had because I told them " This will be your only chances to see Babe Ruth play."
A truly remarkable player in every sense of the word. Go to you tube and watch his high-lights on old scratchy TV. It'll still knock your socks off. The GOAT of all GOATS!
He probably went on to chuck a chair at some student athletes a few minutes later, but that was a pretty fantastic response from Knight.
