I still vividly recall in summer 1984, when the Bulls drafted MJ, saying to friends why in the world did Portland pass on him to get Bowie.
We all kinda understood Houston taking hometown guy Olajuwon as #1, but we were totally worried that Portland would take MJ next. But nope, they took injury prone Bowie who just continued to get hurt and underperform.
Agreed. Olajuwon at #1, you could see the logic. But, Bowie, who was never dominant and injured more often than not in college, was absurd.

And yes, MJ is almost everyone's consensus all-time great with good reason. After that it gets difficult as to who is 2-10.

Bowie played 96 games across 3 Kentucky seasons. He missed one game in college (maybe zero? College Basketball Reference is very upfront about their stats from the early 80's being spotty). His injury concerns in the NBA are well-established. We can plainly see it was extremely foolish to take Bowie before MJ but the Bowie NBA injuries have unfairly infected people's memory of his college performance.

I saw Bowie play in college, and he was fantastic - a slightly shorter version of Ralph Sampson. If he hadn't been so injury prone as a pro he would be in the HoF. Given the TB's already had Drexler on the roster, it wasn't that insane they would pick Bowie

we can all be mad at a mistake and in the next breath wish them well in the next seconds, minutes, days, weeks
I want this year's players to have success this year. nothing is better than seeing Coleman, TSJ, Epps, RJ, et al smile after a play and especially after a game
Same with last year's team and the years before
It is a journey with struggles, small and big - and they will triumph through their struggles
I've never understood fan's directing their personal disappointments and frustrations at players, is it that hard to be supportive, with words of encouragement, and lift them up?
One of all time favorite phrases is, "It's the Journey, not the Destiny". I don't know how many times I have said that to my wife and kids? Nobody knows what the value of achieving success is truly like if they don't struggle through the tough times and enjoy the good times. Plus, there are many degrees and definition of success. So, I say "Enjoy the Journey and the Present". I say this even as I know that I am a "long range", detail-oriented, planner.

If you look closer at his college stats over those three seasons at Kentucky you'll see that he sat out two full years between his second and third seasons and his ppg dropped from 17.4 to 10.5 after he returned. I'd say there were plenty of red flags in the moment.

from Sam Bowie’s wiki page

Injuries (1981–1983)

After the 1980–1981 season, a stress fracture in his left tibia was discovered, the injury caused Bowie to miss the entire 1981–82 season. The stress fracture did not heal completely and Bowie sat out the entire 1982–83 season as well. Doctors at first thought the pain in the left leg was due to shin splints, but just before the season in 1981, new X-rays revealed Bowie had a stress fracture he had been playing on. He was in a cast for 44 weeks. But, after removing the cast, the injury did not heal properly. Bowie had to have it surgically repaired, with a bone graft. As his class had graduated, Bowie applied for and was granted an NCAA medical redshirt to allow him another year of college eligibility.

Portland called Bobby Knight about their positional dilemma regarding that draft.

HIs response:

“Play him [Jordan] at center, and he will be the best center in the league.”

Obviously, they should have listened.

Knight on Jordan's career:

If I were going to pick three or four best athletes I've ever seen play basketball, he'd be one of them. I think he's the best athlete I've ever seen play basketball, bar none. If I were going to pick people with the best ability I've ever seen play the game, he'd be one of them. If I wanted to pick one of the best competitors, he'd be one of them. He's the best athlete, he's one of the best competitors, he's one of the most skilled players, and that to me makes him the best basketball player I've ever seen play.

Say what you will about Bobby Kight, the man, but he knew basketball.

Anyone heard that Montverde had St Rita come down to Florida so that they can try to recruit Morez to play for them? I have heard it three times in the last week from three different people. Some close to the situation and some half drunk.
I doubt that any of the 2 bigs are going anywhere.

The NBA was a “big man’s league” for most of its existence up to that point (not many successful teams built around a shooting guard), and the prior year Portland had drafted a player similar to Jordan in Clyde Drexler, so one can understand the thinking in selecting Bowie at that time. Obviously in hindsight it was a mistake.

I did not realize David Bowie even played basketball.

A less athletic Mick Jagger.
