The trailblazers had Drexler in Jordan's position and were in need of a shot-blocker and center. So why double up on a position that they already had covered with an all-star? No one knew that Jordan would be the GOAT, or even equal to Drexler. He came from a loaded UNC team where he didn't stand out that much.

I can follow Portland's logic, but, boy, am I glad they didn't follow BPA strategy.

I saw Jordan play maybe 30 times in person and he is the only player who was BETTER than his hype. Every game he would do something inventive that made you say to your neighbor "did you see THAT??" and shake your head. I took my kids every opportunity I had because I told them " This will be your only chances to see Babe Ruth play."

A truly remarkable player in every sense of the word. Go to you tube and watch his high-lights on old scratchy TV. It'll still knock your socks off. The GOAT of all GOATS!
I remember hearing a story about Bobby Knight coaching the US national team that MJ was on. He called somebody he knew who worked for the Trailblazers, and said you HAVE to draft this Jordan guy. The guy responded with what you said about already having Drexler and that they needed a center. Knright replied, "WELL PLAY HIM AT CENTER THEN!"
He probably went on to chuck a chair at some student athletes a few minutes later, but that was a pretty fantastic response from Knight.

Yeah, or punch a Puerto Rican cop
because he didn’t wanna give up the gym so a Brazilian team could practice…and then of course get away with it scott-free.

Hard to remember now, but while Jordan certainly was considered an elite college player at the time, nobody really talked about him being a generational talent like recent college stars Magic, Bird, Sampson or Ewing. And no team was built around a two guard. I recently read that something like 16 of the prior 20 MVPs were centers. So, it wasn’t a surprise that the two big men were taken before him.
The answer is in Dean Smith: the only person who could limit Michael Jordan.

Another little known fact-- There was only one school that Michael wanted to attend and it was NOT UNC.

It was ... UCLA!!

They didn't even offer him a scholarship, so he became a 'heel.
Not sure who was coaching the UKES back then but it was kind of an oversight one would think!

My HS alma mater beat Certa and Central Catholic last night!

My brother helps out with the PC BB team and said it was a great game and that Certa hit six DEEP threes and looked good.

Wonder if the offer is committable?
I sure as hell hope so! This team could use some shooters. I'm not looking for a star here; I'd be happy with a Sean Harrington type to come off the bench and provide consistent outside shooting.

I don't think its a committable offer personally. I could be wrong, we'll see. Pence kid had an ILL offer around same time period and he is a bigger stronger kid than Certa. Big difference battling Prairie Central and St. Joe Ogden vs battling B10 athletes. Kid can really play but ILL is bringing in some elite level guards that to me are way tougher.

I'm not questioning you, just interested in a source on this so I can read more. Seems interesting because he was an east coast kid his whole life.

I don't think it's committable either. But we're making it abundantly clear that we are very interested. How he fares in AAU ball will be a (the?) litmus test. Am assuming he'll be playing for one of the big Chicago area based programs. Anyone know for sure?

Nice to "see" another former Fairburyian (if that's word) on here :)
Definitely a huge win for PC to win their conference.

Ha! Yes it is, I did think there would be others from that exact town on the board. When people ask where I’m from, I start with Pontiac, and then move up or down (Fairbury or Bloomington) depending on if the answer is yes or no.

Not to start this again, but PC class of ‘99.

I remember the question asked about Jordan at UNC.. Who was the only person that could hold Michael Jordan under 20 points?

Answer... DEAN SMITH

He went on to average more than thirty in the NBA.
True, but there was no shot clock then so the pace of the game was much slower. I'll never forget the 4 corner 'offense' that UNC perfected. Effective but so, so boring.

posting this here , as it makes the most sense

I vividly recall the days when the key to a successful recruiting year often included getting the best player out of Simeon.
We have had some really great ones out of there. For various reasons, those days are basically over.

As much as I don't really enjoy rampant speculation without any actual information about who is transferring, we are fans posting on a message board and have absolutely no effect on the chemistry or momentum of the team. Whatever happens in the locker room is going to happen regardless of what we do on here.
That is true, but parents are on message boards and social media and as we know do have influence
