I’m always on the fence about CCs actual coaching chops but you really have to hand it to him this year. Consensus to be a bottom 3 team in the big ten, finishing T2 after losing arguably their best player to transfer and another key piece.

He deserves a shot at a better program than NW. it’s the inconsistency that kills his resume.
Collins is a very good coach - I think he would be highly successful at a more high profile program

Does N.Dame go after Collins??

If Collins has this season 2 years ago I think he gets Duke job.

Unless he wants to retire at NW, he should jump to best open job this year

Texas
Texas Tech
Notre Dame
Stanford(?)
Georgetown

All these schools have better basketball history than NW. I suspect Notre Dame, Stanford and Georgetown would be overjoyed to hire him.

Not sure what TX wants. I think they already regret "settling" for Sarkhasian in football.

What a weird position Georgetown is in where they have to fire arguably the biggest legend of the program (which they haven't actually done yet), but if the rumor mill is true they can choose from Mike Brey, Rick Pitino, or Chris Collins and in all likelihood immediately become much better.

Brey will turn 64 in March

Rick Pittino is 70

Not sure how attractive the Georgetown job is now. But- Ewing does make $4M (what were they thinking?).

I am sure they are hoping to catch lightning in a bottle like Shaka Smart at Marquette 25-6 his 2nd season.

That Bruce Pearl thing is hilarious. What a crazy little clam.
I happen to find it very humorous when people lose their minds like that, although it's usually in movies.

Anyone remember Fran McCaffery and his chair thing? (not the bobby knight one, but that was funny too)

One of my favorite coaches almost never gets mentioned in coaching searches, Buzz Williams. I wanted him when we got Groce and Underwood. When we ended up with Groce, Buzz had just come off back to back Sweet 16s at Marquette. You may say well Marquette was a good program so. Without Dwayne Wade on the court, Marquette hadn't had sustained success since Al McGuire. Took them to the Elite 8 the next year and won 22 games or more in 5 of 6 years.

Then he goes to Virginia Tech of all places and quickly makes them a respectable team. When we got Underwood, Williams was just coming off taking VT to the big dance for the 1st time in a decade. Took them to the tournament 3 years in a row which is the only time that has happened in VT history, including a Sweet 16 (only the 2nd in VT history). They were very close to an Elite 8.

Now at Texas A&M, he had them a Bruce Pearl choke job that made him scream like a girl away from an SEC championship. I think he's one of the best pure coaches in the nation. He never really recruits well. He wins with a lot of 3 star guys. He appears to be loyal to his guys taking them from stop to stop, but I think if you paired his coaching with a strong NIL program and an ace recruiter or two, he'd have some damn good teams. If I was Texas, he'd definitely be on my list.

Yeah, Buzz doesn’t get the buzz like he did for a while there.,His name was seemingly mentioned in like every coaching search for quite a while there. I agree he’s still damn good.

other than winning in sports is so important in the SEC and the south , It’s hard to figure why just about every disgraced coach seems to get things started back again down there .

but the south is hardly alone . there are plenty of less notable examples of disgraced coaches getting jobs in northern or western or midwestern schools

I always believe people deserve a second chance . we are all guilty of doing things we shouldn’t .
now , third & fourth chances ? not so much

I lived down there and worked with SEC fans for 25 years. It's a win at all costs mentality, and as long as the coach doesn't get caught, there isn't a lot of hand-wringing about it. Tennessee fans LOVED Bruce Pearl right up until pictures showed up that confirmed him as a liar and a cheat. The very same UT put up with the shenanigans under Philip Fulmer until he stopped winning games. Pearl shows back up at Auburn and is adored, and we've seen how badly Bama has handled an ugly situation. Those are but a few examples of the moral bankruptcy of the SEC (and parts of the ACC), and I didn't even open up the Lane Kiffin volume.

Win at all costs. If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'.

1) Buzz is a Texas guy, coaching at Texas A&M for $4.2M/year (and it increases 100k/year). It is going to be hard to pry him away.
In 4 years, SEC Coach of the year once, and co-coach of the year once.
Texas A&M is 2nd in the SEC this year, with a pair of head scratching early Q4 losses. Likely a 4-6 seed depending on SEC tourney.

2) The VT move was interesting and may have had repercussions.

He jumped ship from MQ based on the odds vs. actually seeing what would happen. He took a pay cut to do so. That means other ADs need to consider if he would do the same again. Article on Buzz from 2014:
"He [Buzz] researched every coach who has been at a high-major program for at least eight seasons to the point where he learned that staying in the same place too long in this era -- especially when you'll be inheriting a new athletic director soon, like he would've been at Marquette -- proves to be a mistake more often than not."

The VT contract was a safety play. He got 500k less per year, yet was guaranteed 18M no matter what happened (firing for cause excluded). They key was the buyout clauses. The buyouts if he was fired, by year: 18.2M, 15.9M, 13.5M, 11M, 8.4M, 5.7M, and very unusually, the payments do not stop if he took another job. His buyouts to move on, on the other hand were very low: 7M, 3.5M, 1.5M, 900k, 500k, 250k

That looks to be a pretty thorough breakdown you did there. Good stuff.

* IF that’s true about this era…It made me think though…dang, I hope Whitman stays for a long darn time…thus, we are more likely to keep Brad for a good long time as well

Buzz is happy at aTm. Like you said, he is a Texas guy and has family down here. Potentially just as important, for now, after they have moved all over the country, his wife’s family is down here too. Her sister and dad, most notably, are just a couple hours away from them, and go see them in college station on a regular basis. Now they visit from Austin, so if UT came calling that probably changes something, but I doubt his wife would be upset with that move.

He promised 5 years ago that there would be no "farewell tour". I guess not saying the words "I'm retiring" is one way to avoid that...
