Did anyone here ever play sports in HS and and actually get coached? We had a guy on our team named Mike but if you just listened to our coach you'd swear his last name was Mike and his first name was D*****. Mike turned out just fine.

Also, I know why TSJ used that clip but that's not even the best underwood yell job vs northwestern. During the covid year, we were down 25 vs the kitties and underwood called time out to 'aggressively counsel' the team per the commentators. With no fans in the stands the TV picked up all of Brad's rant. Based on him yelling you would think the team folded, right? No, we turned a 25 point deficit into a 15 point win

The greatest coach I ever had was my high school baseball coach. A TRUE to the CORE “fire and brimstone” type of coaching style. But oh boy…. If you bought in…. He’d sincerely do anything for you. A couple sayings of his that I still use to this day while coaching my high school baseball:

“I’m looking for nine guys to go to war with and nine guys I’d take a bullet for.”

“I hate losing more than I love winning.”

In talking to a close and lifelong friend of mine who is the only Illinois native to be honored as a consensus All-State basketball player (hon. mention AA) AND a First Team Div. I All-American in golf, he told me this about his view on coaches. All he wanted was a coach as passionate, driven, and hard working as he was who supported and trusted him....and pushed him to be better every day. He never had a screamer for a coach and never had to respond to negative motivation. This guy was always asking questions about doing the right thing for every situation and welcomed any criticism. He had a deep respect and appreciation for every coach he had from the time he was 6 right through his collegiate career...and felt lucky to have been able to play for all of them.

The point he made was that if a player is truly driven to be the best he/she can be, the temperament of the coach is of little importance. It's all about being a part of something bigger than yourself but trying to be the best self you can be...and the coach is just part of that team...a very important part.

As it relates to Underwood, the U. of Illinois is fortunate to have him and he is fortunate to be coaching at U of I. He works hard, is passionate, pushes his players, and seems to always be learning and adapting. So, let BU be BU. My hometown fired one of the most legendary and successful coaches in Illinois HS basketball history just because some tinker bell got elected to the School Board and decided to get rid of him because he used a curse word. Underwood is far from Bob Knight and his horrendous behavior Let him do his job.

not really. College basketball is the transfer portal now. Before too long teams will start to figure out, there's minimal value from recruiting high school players. High school guys don't always pan out, they sometimes are good but not as good as you thought, they transfer. Just take proven guys from other teams at the end of each season. It worked just fine for Jerome Tang.

Pretty much sums up my reactions for the day. There are some pretty crazy tales both here and (especially) Twitter. Here’s my stupid takes, too:

:eek:- Sad to see Jayden go, he’s an electric scorer. No I don’t think he was the reincarnation of Frank Mason. I think we will replace him just fine.

:cautious:- Some people saying eff him, burning his jersey. Grow up, people. He’s an 19 year old kid. Yes I will still cheer for him, as I will anyone who’s ever worn the O+B

o_O- Remember how bad we all felt when the whole staff turned over and Kofi was possibly going to Kentucky? Trust in our leader.

:sneaky::unsure:- Coleman declares for NBA while maintaining eligibility, TSJ posts defending BU. They are still a big wait and see, but we could have a “law firm return” situation if those guys decided to return together. Would instantly raise our floor super high

Anyway. Here’s to another 2 months to panic

That was the entire point of the tweet.

If every player that transfers out stinks or is soft, and Illinois sees more transfers out than any other Big Ten school (other than I guess Minnesota), wouldn't that mean our staff is seriously misevaluating talent/character? 🤔
Bro, give it a rest! You’ve made your point, you should have no (healthy) desire to turn optimists who support our current coach into pessimists who don’t. You’re dangerously close to going from a “skeptic” to a one-trick pony hater, my friend. It’s relentless.

Well evidently Whitman and some boosters disagree with his style at times also. I’m not an Underwood hater and think he is probably the best coach Illinois can get even though we had to overpay. I’ve seen a lot of practices at the Maui Invitational over the years with all the other supposed yellers included. Never seen anything close to what Brad did. He didn’t say stop playing like a blank and get your head out of your blank. Told a player he was a pu$$y straight to his face over and over. Not saying Underwood isn’t a good person or family man just shared a real experience that I thought was relevant since everyone enjoys talking about his behavior. Again I’m a fan of tough love but it shocked even me. Well I guess I should stop rooting for Illinois until Brad bakes everyone cookies to hand out during timeouts.
I hate when people say we “overpaid,” lol. It’s not your money, it’s not taxpayer money and it’s objectively GOOD for people to develop a percent that Illinois pays its coaches exceptionally high salaries.

Yeah, between the random Groce <--> Underwood comparisons today and the Underwood-is-a-big-fat-meany-pants narrative from the last week or more, it's been difficult to have actual on-topic discussions. I get that everyone needs to accept and invite challenging viewpoints, because that's what a message board is for at it's core, but geez man.... lol

Sounds like my old coach, MD?

I was kinda hoping TSJ’s comment would have destroyed his soapbox, but sadly it did not.

This is the exact opposite of the lesson I took away from all of this. Veteran teams have the advantage. I think, wherever possible, you need to use the portal to complement a core you've already built rather than rebuilding around transfer upperclassmen each year. This year was mostly understandable because we lost so much from last season, but it's a great illustration of why building around transfers is risky.

That's because they weren't put behind junior and senior transfers with immediate eligibility, too.

If Underwood told Epps he wasn't planning on adding a senior transfer PG who wanted significant minutes would Epps even consider leaving?
Don’t we have multiple guard spots open currently? So you’d rather not have a true starting point guard and instead have a guy who’s talented offensively, but realistically is an undersized off guard play point for us?

He’s a talented player but he’s no Ayo or Trent and he’s not leaving because they’re bringing in another point guard.

Would love to know who writes these “dear john “ letters for these transfers. Goes on for three paragraphs saying how “great” everything and everyone was. The trainers, tutors, professors, coaches, and fans were the best. How his teammates were like family. But oh by the way in my best interest I’m the hell out of here.
Probably AI….and not Allen Iverson.

BTW Brad spent the entire night in the hospital with Jayden….Trent, Monte, Kofi, Ayo, Andres, TJ, Goode just to name a few all love the guy….there’s a lot of love that goes into these kids too. He’s helped players families out when they have had nothing. Got them help when they needed it. Got family members back on their feet etc.
This is what kills me about this thread. The number of talented players we’ve lost in a time where every program is losing players is far less than those that have stayed. Ayo, Trent, Kofi, and TSJ are IMO the 4 most talented players that have been here during Underwood’s tenure and they love the guy. If people would rather have Mark Smith, Adam Miller, Podz, and Epps go for it.

I’m curious how many people on here that complain about Underwood’s yelling/coaching would be willing to let someone in their house to observe their parenting or watch them on their job 30+ time a year to see how they are “building their culture”.

They all do all seem to have a Chat GPT quality about them, don’t they? 🤔
I haven’t thought that before but the Epps one totally looked like Chat GPT to me. I can’t remember if it said “furthermore” or “moreover” but there were a couple of words that didn’t seem to be commonly used currently.

Writing emails and texts is going to get rapidly weirder in the next year or two.

Ideally, each player would be writing their own and we’d be proud of their collegiate level linguistic abilities.

Realistically, someone in the public relations department is crafting them so they don’t come off as anything other than thankful and humble.

But even more realistically, some overworked peon in the PR department is using Chat GPT to churn out these announcements and no superior is the wiser. (See: Vanderbilt University, MSU shooting alert)
