We win a game during the season and the post-game thread struggles to add pages after the initial reaction, but a thread about Illini basketball two weeks after the season ends, oh baby you better believe we can have 24 pages and counting in less than two full days. It will always crack me up how much more people would rather b*tch than celebrate our success.

Simple solution for a group of posters... don't like our coach's style. Stop watching our games. The beloved will be fine. And the NIL $$$ will not dry up with BU at the helm.
Well evidently Whitman and some boosters disagree with his style at times also. I’m not an Underwood hater and think he is probably the best coach Illinois can get even though we had to overpay. I’ve seen a lot of practices at the Maui Invitational over the years with all the other supposed yellers included. Never seen anything close to what Brad did. He didn’t say stop playing like a blank and get your head out of your blank. Told a player he was a pu$$y straight to his face over and over. Not saying Underwood isn’t a good person or family man just shared a real experience that I thought was relevant since everyone enjoys talking about his behavior. Again I’m a fan of tough love but it shocked even me. Well I guess I should stop rooting for Illinois until Brad bakes everyone cookies to hand out during timeouts.

If that were true, Brad would have benched Mayer for no defense/no effort. He didn’t until the very last 10 minutes of the season.

Blaming these guys for transferring out bc they can’t play defense is bs. What freshmen is good at defense? Very few.

Skyy Clark simply wasn’t good enough. Makes sense he transferred out.

But the other guys:

Adam Miller- was a good player. Never should have left.

Podz- misevaluation by the staff.

Andre Curbelo- dynamic talent that the staff couldn’t get the most out of.

Jayden Epps- very promising freshmen season. Left anyway.

When your employees leave the company, it’s the company’s fault.
I agree with your post except Skyy was definitely good enough. If he wasn't good enough then that's on BU for misevaluating and penciling him in as a freshman starter without a veteran alternative.

Did anyone here ever play sports in HS and and actually get coached? We had a guy on our team named Mike but if you just listened to our coach you'd swear his last name was Mike and his first name was D*****. Mike turned out just fine.
Yeah, I played for a tough coach in HS, though this was all last century. After bad losses, practices were wind sprints, pushups, and distance running while being cursed at. After the worst practice, we throttled our next opponent with how high our intensity was not wanting any more of those practices. So it does work. Of course the downside was there were some guys who quit after sophomore year, not wanting to play varsity for that coach, and half the team not wanting to play in the summer league.

I also played for a "players coach" in another sport who was the opposite always joking with everyone, having a good time, and never raised his voice. This coach could "recruit" the best athletes from other sports to play for him and had us motivated to the point that we would organize our own practices during the offseason. That team had the best season for that sport in our schools history to this day. That coach decided to just teach so he could spend more time on his family, and his kid just graduated after starting for a rival Big Ten school in football, so I guess that path works to.

I had a teammate who had a long pro career, another teammate who was a D1 All American, a boss whose team won an NCAA championship, have many friends and co-workers who played D1 sports. Enough for me to say that a tough coach is by no means a requirement for success, but if that's what some need, then good for them.

This came directly from SEVERAL of my coaches’ mouths in high school.

If they are correcting you (often yelling to get your attention) it means they are willing to spend valuable time trying to shape you into the player/person they need you to be.

Be concerned when the yelling/correcting stops.
It’s like when you’re putting on weight. You know when your friends stop making fat jokes you’ve gone too far. 🐷 😝

First, Whitman's is the only opinion that matters outside of the players and remainder of the coaching staff. I couldn't care less what boosters think, and neither should Brad.
Second, the Maui tournament was in 2018. Brad has--by nearly every definition of the phrase--"toned it down" since then.
Third, and perhaps most importantly--I had coaches using that word with me in junior high. It made me want to work harder and not get called that anymore. If a word is going to break the spirit of an 18 or 19 year old, that 18 or 19 year old is most likely in over their head and may want to consider a different way to spend their time.

While it is frustrating that we haven't had any deep runs in the tourney. I will take that everyday over the frustration of not making the tourney year after year. Which is what we were dealing with before Brad took over. We need to remember how tough the big10 is the last couple of years. Used to be there were always 3-4 teams at the bottom that you could count on 6-7 wins, not like that anymore. It would definitely be nice to get to the next step.
Agreed that at least making the tournament every year beats not making it by a mile- even if we haven't been successful once getting into the tournament. With the big 10 doing so poorly in the NCAA tournament the last few years, I could see the selection committee decreasing the number of big 10 teams getting into only 6 or so. This makes it a threat we could go back to the old days of watching the NCAA from the sidelines if we can't at least maintain our current level of success. OTOH, given BU is a top 10 paid coach, it sure would be nice and reasonable to expect us to get into the sweet 16, at least, every couple of years.

OK. I finally caught and geez Louise some of you need to get a grip on the criticism of Coach. A rumor about him maybe leaving probably got too far out of hand and now some are gonna nitpick this guy on everything. I still contend that we will have BU until he retires and I think we could only be so lucky. I like going to the tournament, we will make our run soon.

But other coaches get there point across without getting in a players face coming off the court. Miami’s coach comes to mind. Seems his sideline demeanor is pretty effective. I would take that anyday if I was a player.
It seems that the coaches who have made it to the Final Four this year are similar, e.g., SDS's coach.
I remember watching BU on the sidelines when hecoached at OSU and being glad he wasn't the Illini coach. Then, what do you know, he is hired. I've been mostly supportive since then as he has many good qualities and has the Illini winning again. But what I saw of his interaction with Epps on the sideline this year has me re-evaluating. I know I wouldn't want to play for a coach who loses it regularly. BU could stand some exploartion of ways to increase his emotional intellignence.

Eh. It all depends on what words you used often when and where you grew up and it also changes from person to person. My friends and I call each other "pu$$y" all the time. No big deal. Some words trigger people quicker than others. My brother in law will be ready to fight someone calls him b@st@rd even in casual talk. Just triggers him. I hate being called a loser, but Im not gonna quit the team if coach calls me 1 trying to motivate me. Jayden wants to move on, no ill will. Lets not act like these kids never watched an illini game before they signed up to play for him.

I don't disagree, but feel that this board is hung up on Sweet 16 being the bar. S16 means nothing.

NOTHING!

We need to win championships. B1G regular season, B1G Tourney, NCAA. S16 as a goal is giving trophies to 16th place. I understand wanting to do well in the tourney, but in the immortal words of Ricky Bobby:

that doesn't mean it was't a great year, or a great team, or even just a good year, or team. But championships count. Nothing else. S16 is an arbitrary bar set by someone here on Loyalty or in the media, and it's just nonsense.

We all have our own take on Jaden Epps, and how good he is/how much he will be missed. ON3 has him ranked as the #30 Combo Guard (CG) in the portal so far, FWIW.
ON3 rankings are typically trash, glad to see they’re continuing the trash

I think, after the first season at IL, BU has toned down (somewhat?). But, stripes/spots on a cat .........

However, I do wonder how his meetings, here on out, with JW go.
