You don’t go 2/3 with TJ, Coleman, and RayJ/Yuri then this team won’t sniff the tourney …
Love you Indy but I disagree. It's a NIT/Bubble team as constructed right now. Add Shannon, it's another 8 seed type team. Add a good pg (we will), it's a 6-7 seed type team. Coleman would raise the floor even more. Still a lot of talent on this roster right now

I don't think it is valid to say that Yuri is a massive downgrade from Dennis. Different players. Both would be huge upgrade from not having anybody this past year who could run a team or basic PnR set.

And if TSJ and CH stay in draft we will get more players to fill their spots.
You are right that they are different players, but we'll just have to agree to disagree...massive downgrade in my opinion. Especially with a team that isn't loaded with lights-out shooters.

I don't think its that simple wrt Yuri.

If Brad could sign a 10 apg senior PG today he would take the commitment and call it a day. Our big need last season was not more scoring - TSJ, MM, Dain, Jayden, and Skyy were all adequate offensively. The problem was there was nobody to run the offense and get them them the open shots they needed to be sucessful.

JMO but I would prefer a 10 apg PG over a 20 ppg PG. I think we added good outside shooters with Marcus, Quincy and Justin. Get Dain the ball in the low post and the offense will work fine!

I stand with Indy on this one...don't think this makes the tourney without 2 of those 3. And that's frustrating for sure.

I have two questions.

1. Do bluffs by recruits happen (pretending somewhere will pay them more, as surely not all coaches talk and recruits could assess that chance)?

2. Why would a university like Illinois not just pay him? Assuming tsj comes back (and arguably more so if he doesn’t ), this is imio (in my inexperienced opinion) a key get. So what if we overpay. I feel like that’s actually a good thing in some ways. It’s just money and if we pay our players well then good for us? I feel like I don’t know enough to legitimately participate but this feels like a really bad loss for us if we don’t get him. I don’t understand why we wouldn’t have enough money compared to the other places.

This has certainly taken a turn towards a typical illini recruitment of a player who were confident about.

I watch a lot of college ball but I couldn't tell you who would be better for this team

YURI or Ray J

What I do know is we need a legit PG and CH and/or TSJ

Otherwise season will be a struggle

Depends on who you have on the team. If Shannon is back plus you add another good player (If Coleman leaves), a player like Collins would really make this team better
But RayJ would have made it even better. He just lead the 5th best offense in the country. Yuri is a 6 foot guard who is a poor shooter and shot 50% at the rim in the A10.

I think A10 and MAC are similar level of play

Given problems we had running the offensive last year with a couple shoot first PGs in Skyy and Jayden my vote is for pass first PG.

Respect to all, I’m with LvilleILL … assuming there’s a decent Plan B PG. I think people are underestimating the value of Goode and Domask to this team, not to mention Gurrier as a pretty solid, albeit less upside, replacement for Hawkins.

Experienced PG
Rodgers
Domask
Goode
Dainja

With QG getting starter minutes off the bench (or vice versa with Domask off bench). Sencire with the bench spark plug. Harmon to play backup PG. And some freshmen contribution.

I think that’s a tournament team. Just not a BIG title contender.

Edit: forgot my closing statement… add Shannon and it’s for sure tourney-worthy in my mind.

Agree. And Yuri may be small, but he's well-built for his height and is not afraid to drive it. Also he will dive for every loose ball.

Unless Edey comes back I think the Illini can play with anybody in B10. Just need better defense - giving up +80 points to Penn State, NW, Iowa and Indiana is ridiculous.

My last post was sort of incoherent. Said differently:

Hawkins/Mayer/Shannon to Quincy/Goode/Domask would be a talent downgrade for sure. But adding a competent point guard would be a huge upgrade to the offense. Might not net to zero… but might not be the drop (to out of the tourney) that some think.

Add Shannon back in, and now Goode and Quincy are competing for those Hawkins minutes.

Of course, all dependent on the competent, non-freshman, PG…. who we don’t have yet.
