I see a little similarity in this Illini team and the Flyin' Illini. Obviously, the talent levels are quite different, but the way they play successfully might be similar. The FI had Bardo starting at PG, although he isn't your prototype there. 7th man, Larry Smith was probably the closest to a traditional PG. But, one big key for the that team was that they had 5 players average 1.8-4.4 assists/game (Smith 4.4, Bardo 4.1). They were an incredibly good passing team, thereby setting teammates up for open looks. They also were great at making teams pay if they tried to press, often getting dunks from quick passes downcourt. This year, maybe we have enough passers to make it work with CH, TSJ, Domask, Goode, Ty, etc all being above average passers (IMHO.)

If you look at the numbers, we averaged fewer assists per game than turnovers per game. Are there other numbers that demonstrate that we are anything close to a good passing team?

Steve Bardo took only a couple of three point shots per game, but he made nearly 50% of them. He also averaged more than two assists for every turnover he made. Larry Smith had similar assist to TO numbers in 88-89. Larry shot nearly 40% from 3. Who do we have anywhere on our team who demonstrated any kind of evidence that they might be capable of putting up these kinds of numbers this coming season?

Of the guys you mentioned there's only one who has an assist to TO ratio much greater than 1. That's Goode, averaging 0.4 assists to 0.2 turnovers. Not much of a sample size to conclude anything there. Is there some evidence I'm overlooking to suggest that they are above average passers?
22-23 Illini Stats

Face it. There is absolutely NOTHING similar about the current Illini to the 88-89 Illini. That 88-89 Illini team made up for a lack of size with incredible all around skill and athleticism and featured great ball handling and shooting at nearly every position. That team showed up hungry to play consistently. When that team got beat, it was because their shots didn't fall. It wasn't because they didn't show up to play...which was a BIG problem multiple games last season for our current team. Furthermore, our team has some front court talent AND size, but we have not demonstrated anywhere close to the passing, ball handling, shooting, and game sense that Flying Illini team showed.
