I was at that game. 6th row from the floor along the baseline. If Augie or Roger so much as shed a drop of sweat on Sean May, they were called for a foul. Meanwhile, Powell got practically assaulted when he got the ball in the paint and it was never called. The NCAA and the Refs were on the Roy Williams deserves to win an NCAA title bandwagon and it showed. Plus I assume our guys at least went to class sometimes unlike the NC players. A travesty!
On the one hand our shooting percentage for the evening was 38% compared to NC's 51%
On the other hand NC attempted 19 free throws we attempted 6.

Mulcahy is an excellent defender, a good decision-maker in the high pick and roll, and a capable (but not great) shooter… sign me up.

I do wonder (1) how interested he’d really be in Illinois or any B1G team for that matter, and (2) what kind of NIL Illinois could bring to the table given what I’m assuming are some upset boosters after the RayJ miss. Would they pony up for Mulcahy?
I am pretty sure he is hated by every other fan base in the BIG 10 except Rutgers. He probably feeds off of that. If he transfers to another BIG 10 school, he could probably handle the heat.

One reason for the discrepansy in shooting might be because our best inside shooter was on the bench nearly the whole game. Another might be that Sean May was allowed to assault Augie, or Powell everytime they took a shot. And another reason might be because we were not allowed to defend their player closest to the basket. I do seem to remember our guards being cold for a big portion of the game but that could in part be due to the fact that the refs did not allow us any inside game. I don’t generally like to whine about officiating but I went back and re-watched the game on Youtube a couple of years ago. We got hosed. In the National Championship game! Yeah I’m not over it lol.

Both are not separate, but the same. UNC was getting every call in the lane so they kspt going to May. We couldn't go inside because our guys were in foul trouble literally all night. If I remember right we ended up ahooting the most threes that we had shot all year that night. And, for the 05 ILLINI, who was a three-point ahooting juggernaut, that is saying something. It's all related to how they called the game.

Sorry. Responded, then read your post, which said pretty much the same thing.

Probably easier to say in hindsight but given a choice between Mulcahy and RayJ, I think Mulcahy is actually a better fit for our roster.

I will stipulate that RayJ is the more talented player in a vacuum. But he’s not overly big or long, not overly quick or explosive. Also would probably look to be a top 2-3 scoring option. I don’t know how well he will be able to get his own shots or defend at the P5 level. Of course a sample size of only one game, but he went 5-19 against a Michigan team that did have length and athleticism but I wouldn’t say was overly locked in on the defensive end. Great playmaker though.

Terrance will probably average close to 20PPG. Coleman will probably look to be more assertive offensively based on NBA feedback. Domask and Quincy are both capable offensive players. Dain needs and deserves touches. Luke needs shots. We don’t need a star/alpha at the PG. We need someone who can operate within ball screens, make the correct reads and set up teammates, and ideally play good defense and be able to knock down enough open shots to keep defenses honest. Mulcahy fits that to a T. And although annoying to play against I think he would fit in great with Ty, Sencire, and Jeremiah.

If I was picking first in a pickup game I probably grab RayJ. But for this roster I think Mulcahy type player is a perfect fit. It’s not always about landing the splashiest names but finding the right missing pieces. Hope we get Mulcahy or someone like him.

it sucks in a vacuum.

I feel the same about Mulcahy as I did Hunter - cheering for him would feel like selling my basketball soul.

But as golf taught us this week, it doesn't pay to stick to your principles. When you get a chance to take the bag, you take the bag. Mulcahy is a bag and I would take him.
