Illinois 48, Indiana 45 OT Postgame

Amazing. An average QB from Ball St has one of the most incredible comebacks cold off the bench and then has one of the best games for a QB in decades. Apparently he's this hidden gem of an elite QB that no one ever knew about!....

Or it could be that these two games are outliers and a product of circumstances, coincidences, quality of opponents, experience, improved line play and receiver play, playing from behind, and adjustments in play calling.

People need to settle down and get off their emotional high. I'd start him next game, but as soon as he struggles, I'd pull him for Luke.
You know what they say about things that seem too good/bad to be true? Colorado does. So does Northwestern.

Extreme trends tend to revert to the mean. Yesterday was a LOT of fun but doesn’t mean Paddock is the next Tom Brady. I appreciate the overall upward trend but don’t get too attached to the spikes or the dips. Just enjoy the ride.

Goes both ways - we gave IU’s QB way too much time. Does Henry not believe in an occasional blitz?
This is what I don't get. Either we have so little confidence in our coverage that we don't blitz, or Henry is doing his own thing, despite how well we played last year bringing more heat.

I've seen this happen over and over again in sports and the business world.

I equate it to having a system that works very well, then having the head guy leave. When the new guy takes over, instead of keeping things rolling and making minor incremental tweaks, the new guy says "I gotta be me" and decides to make bigger changes to make it 'his system.' Instead of improving things, it just makes things worse. Then, instead of going back to what was working, they stubbornly keep doing what they think they should, and things never improve.

Who knows, and BB is making $6M+ a year to figure those things out.

Henry did bring pressure - 5 or 6 at various times - but Sorsby wound up torching one of our CBs almost every time. We don’t have Witherspoon, Martin and Brown back there this year.

I said this earlier this year that our offense seemed to be moving in slow motion compared to other offenses in the Big Ten. With Paddock at qb that is no longer the case. While Luke has been capable this year. Paddock should have gotten the starting nod. Even if Luke has more athletic ability and potential he needs to realize it is also about pocket presence and being able to get through the progressions quickly. This is an apparent misread of our personal on the coaching staff's part. Hats off to John Paddock for being ready for the moment even though it should have been much earlier.
I love what Paddock is doing right now, and pretty sure he will get the next start. Exciting times for sure. But I find it hard to believe that John might have outplayed Luke leading up to the season and the coaches, for whatever reason, failed to name him the starter.

Whatever his scheme or plan was for quarterback pressure it wasn't very effective. If you want to make an average quarterback look good just give him five seconds every time to throw the ball and he'll pick you apart. If you aren't getting good pressure on the qb fairly often you have to change things up. I would much rather blitz more often and take a chance that the qb might find someone while running for his life or under extreme duress than let him stand back there fo five seconds knowing there's a 90% probability he will find someone open. Our secondary can't cover people for that long, in fact most can't if the receivers are any count.

I hope most people aren’t clamoring for Paddock and ALSO thinking BB just “missed” his greatness over the past 11 months. I think the general consensus is that Paddock has played his way into consideration the last two games (well one game and one drive). Altmyer was probably the best choice to begin the season with. Honestly, he may still be the person who should start. But there are two extremes that need to be avoided:

1. Altmyer has to start the next game because “he’s the starter”.

2. Paddock should have started the whole season.

It may very well be that Altmeyer has outperformed Paddock in practice all year but I would guess not by much. Something that should maybe be taken into account is that no matter how much we try to make it, practice speed and reps are not the same as game speed. Same can be applied to both football and basketball. Paddock reads the defense better and has more pocket presence. In games this is much more needed to be effective than when doing practice reps. That is why he should have been #1 on the depth chart and worked Luke into the games as the season went along imo.

Offensive line was great. Not sure if improvement or lousy IU defensive line. Give a talented QB time and he will pick a defense apart. In any case line should be given plaudits.
An average O line will look a lot better when you have an experienced QB thats able to go through his progressions quickly, anticipating where his WR’s are going to be,have a quick release with accuracy.John was able to complete some tight passes …..so if people are calling Indiana’s defense bad because our receivers were open,so was our defense too but as far as I can recall Indiana’s QB didn’t go over 500 passing yards .Am just saying sometimes you have to give credit where it’s due.

This is priceless and cracks me up a lot as I see a lot of the same in my 15 year old son. There is hope! #nevercrushconfidence

Paddock was great, but IU had no pass rush. Luke is still more mobile and has a better arm, and he had a very good game vs Minny. That said, let Paddock start the rest of the season.
This. As I watched the game I kept noticing that Indiana had no pass rush and sometimes only had 3 rush, but their DBs aren't that good. Or maybe the general WR talent of Wiliams, Bryant, Washington combined with QB time leads to this kind of game.
