Purdue 77, Illinois 71 Postgame

#326
9/16 56 % Purdue
4/16 25% Illinois
They got much better looks from three than we did, as a result of better passing and ball movement
With 'the Hulk" in the middle getting 25 to 30 a game, not much margin for error for opponents

That was a great college game, I enjoyed everything but the final score. Harken back 10 years or so and offer any of us around then the opportunity to be where we are at this morning as a basketball team, and 75-80% of us will take that offer. The rest will fuss and whine about rotations, defense, referees, etc. I was hoping for the W, but expecting the L.

I did have to laugh at some of early game discussions comparing Edey to Ralph Sampson and Shaq. They are all very good basketball players, but Sampson and Shaq were athletes - Edey is not.

I'm upset by the loss, understandably so. My reactions: Golly Gee Willikers, Yikes, Consarn it all, Oh, my! - publicly. Privately, I'm very fluent in cusswordology.

Right now all I can say is beat the tar out of Iowa! (whatever that means). Rebound from the loss, Fighting Illini!

Aw-shucks, have a nice day! Today is the first day of the rest of your life! Enjoy. Summer of Love 67.

Needed a better performance from TJS to win. Especially when Purdue was playing at a high level. They are tough to beat when they play like they did in the second half.

So a pregame discussion with several Purdue fans that included reference by me about the chanting at other arenas that has been done while TJ shooting.

This morning comes the riposte, asking me if I had heard what was being chanted by Krush while Edey was shooting. Yep, I did. And so did everyone tuned in. There goes the moral high ground.

I Dont Care Whatever GIF

Disappointed in the loss but after some sleep I’m encouraged. That was the most bite we’ve had defensively in a long time. We probably played our C game offensively. And it took the team with the most dominant interior presence since Shaq (maybe Wilt?) shooting 8-10 from 3 in the second half and having every loose ball bounce their way to beat us.

I need to see that defense again vs Iowa but if we can play with that intensity we will be a tough out.

Purdue is very good and 8-10 threes speaks for itself

But I don't get what Harmon and Goode bring at the end of the game over Ty and Quincy
While it was great to hear Goode's name with him showing some toughness rebounding earlier in game, it is a common theme on some of our losses this season. Him in over a guy like TY is crazy to me. I don't think we lose in East Lansing or at PSU if he was in there.

Harmon, you can make a case for.

I had a feeling Ty would be better this game and he was. Edey on him or not, he is still able to get to his multiple spots around the rim where he can score and contribute. He might smoke a layup or two, but he is can be harder to find on offense because of his cutting.

Looking back at all of the losses this year, we can talk about sub patterns and who is in when, but take a look at the opposing teams effort it takes to beat us. It is insane... our boys are good, really good.

That action w Domask and Ty was pretty sweet. We needed more of that but Ty wasn’t in enough for it to happen more than the two times it did.

First half was nearly perfect. And second half, we can question some decisions and a few unlucky bounces.

Last week, we discussed the Team Luck rankings:

Illinois is #224 and is -.6 per game while Purdue is #42 and a positive 2.1 points per game luckier.
That seems about right last night. Purdue got two lucky bounces at the end and it resulted in +6 points.

Under the subject line of Why I Don’t Bet, saw someone on here give valid reasoning why the over/under line was too low based upon score last time and us having Shannon last night. Suggested all of Loyalty place bets to further fund NIL. Hope he held on to his Benjamin.

Another pivotal play in the second half was Hawkins dunk attempt were Edey got all wrist. Should have been a foul and a T. I've seen plays this year where the guy got all ball and still got called for a foul, just ridiculous. I believe that changed the momentum of the game.
Believe FrankenEdeys hand hit the rim as well,,,, isn't that goal tending? Bad thing about peecock is you can't back up and watch again and they seem to not show many replays

Who is in charge of our defensive scheming? With the amount of senior leadership on this team, I can't wrap my head around the "WHY" we have regressed over the season and been so bad these last 3-4 weeks. It's not ideal, considering we are now in March.

For reference, AdjD (via Pomeroy):
2024 - 102.9 (95th) - 3/6/2024
2023 - 94.9 (26th)
2022 - 93.3 (29th)
2021 - 88.9 (7th)
2020 - 93.7 (35th)

Why are are rodgers and Quincy good enough to start a game but not good enough to finish them?

Sleepers called it. One player is going to get into foul trouble and that will be the difference in the game. TJ got that ridiculous 2nd foul with 10 min left in the first. Being on the bench so long really affected the rest of his game...
Edey should have had 4 fouls with 10 min left on that hawkins "block". That could have allowed us to defend the 3 ball a little better and get Ty some more minutes.

Overall though, any little thing could've helped and at the end of the day, a game is a collection of these little moments. We were the better team in the first half and they made it up in the 2nd.

Well, in retrospect, I thought we actually played a good game. What can you do when they just go nuts from three? We, altgeld88 and I, decided to double our fun at the bar and play trivia (they do it every Tuesday at WOB where we are) while watching the game. A couple of friends joined us to help out.

Although we were only a team of 4, while many others had 6 to 7 members, we finished 4th out of 22 teams...pretty respectable. The best part was the name I gave our team, which altgeld88 wholeheartedly endorsed (even though our two teammates had no idea what it meant)...we were...
