Let's be clear here y'all.... Texas Basketball "history" and "tradition" starts and ends mainly with Kevin Durant. That's it. They had a real good run from 02' -08' but that's it. I know some Longhorn fans and they would gladly give up ever making another NCAAT for just one more football natty.

The only appeal they should have to steal a coach from a T20 program like ours is cold hard cash, that's about it.

So who do you think Hammer's people are taking calls from these days?

For Florida, I'll zag and say no because their AD is a pariah down there and they've been embroiled with terrible hires across the athletic department for the past 6-7 years. Their fundraising has also struggled, hurt by the NIL lawsuit.

Was curious how Coach Roger Powell, Jr was doing and saw that Valpo has not been great. Is he in over his head as a head coach? And could possibly be on way out in a year or two? Or is he dealing with extra adversity there?

"unusually low-rent in their behavior" - just a perfectly painted picture. Bravo. The few MD fans I've come across have shattered my perception of crab-cake eating croakies-wearing mid-atlantic bros - not that these types are particularly nice, but was not expecting vulgar scoundrels.
lol "vulgar scoundrels".

Ask my bro @Retro62 about that. The past two times when we've attended Illini games at Maryland and he's had his coat off wearing an Illini sweatshirt he's had guys literally say "F&$k you!" to him as we walk along the crowded concourse pregame. (I'm sheepish enough to keep my coat on in that arena until I'm safely in my seat!) Never seen that except, as I said, an Eagles game (which is the absolute rock-bottom datum of fan behavior in my experience. Those people might well beat up a pregnant woman if she's wearing opposing-team garb.)

I don't know what the root of the bad behavior is. Suspect it's decades-long envy of UNC and Duke and feeling like fourth-class ACC citizens compared with those two and the intellectually-superior UVa crowd that also permeates DC. Only other place I've seen it is MSU fans' seething, couch-burning rage toward the insufferable Ann Arbor crowd.

That's why, walking out of Xfinity Center last month among those mouth-breathers moments after MSU prevailed via a 65-foot buzzer-beater, I enjoyed a quiet, massive schadenboner.

True, and don't we want it to be that way??

I think this just comes with the territory of having a top tier coach - if you want to play in this tier - compete for championships like Brad and JW say they do - you have to be able to take the heat that comes with it. I'd rather we have a coach that other teams are constantly trying to poach instead of having 100% assurance of continuity each year because nobody is interested in our guy.

(Along these lines, I think the exact reverse of this issue is the problem that some of us have with parts of our assistant staff this year. Obviously, OA and GA are guys that plenty of other programs would want, but I suspect that's the end of the list there for our assistants.)
If no one is trying to take your coach, you've probably got the wrong guy.

As would I … But this isn’t like Iowa or something … Have to take Texas seriously …

Texas could make him an offer a very, very attractive offer if they choose …
Thing is I don’t think Whitman tries to match any offer Underwood gets from another school I think he’s tired of BU using that to try and get a raise and BU season this season isn’t worth him getting a raise. Jmo

First year is rarely good for anyone rebuilding a program. (Look at Brad's first couple here...)

The good news for Roger is they got better as the season went along and made minor bit of history in the MVC tournament. They were the first 11 seed to ever make the MVC Semi-Final, where they lost a very close game to Bradley. Regardless of the totals, 15 wins was the programs high water mark since 2019-2020. They didn't set the world on fire, but I have to assume they are relatively happy with how things went in year one. There was certainly a lot of buzz about how the season ended. (Winning 3 games in the tournament)

I don't have any extra insight but he inherited a team that went 11-21. Had a rough first season with just 7 wins. More than doubled that win count this year, his second year, with 15. That's also their highest win total since the 2019-2020 season. Looking at Kenpom, the year before he took over Valpo ended #292. His first season, they ended #300. This season, they ended #207.

I think it's probably way too early to say he's in over his head, in fact this season seems like an encouraging step in the right direction.

He'd have 2 COLLEGE choices. Wait to see if Mick jumps or Dana retires. If a guy is winning at a program and still wants out I'd do a lot of due diligence as to why. Oregon is obviously a different story if Altman decides to pack it in.
Added one word that may be a very big one in this whole Golden thing.

According to Indy, Golden was also looking at NBA opportunities. Sacramento is open because they have an interim. If I were betting, I'd bet the Clippers would move on from Ty Lue after this season. Not sure if the NBA options are still on the table, but it seems like if they are he'd be open for those.

I'm sure Golden and his team would do the appropriate due diligence at UCLA, but it sure seems like Mick just hates being in the Big Ten and having all of the travel. Maybe there is something deeper, but it's hard to tell given he's such a curmudgeonly figure.

Texas opening update ...

CDC focused on 4 names ... Sean Miller, Will Wade, Brad Underwood, Bill Self (yes this is legit) ...

Ivey may get an interview but I think CDC is going to go the route of a proven college coach ...
I had planned to ask you about Self to Texas. I read that he has been intrigued by the Texas job for a few years. Is it legitimately possible? It would be a Texas and CDC move to try.

Thanks. I didn't look at the advanced stats, only overall record. I appreciate the input and it sounds like maybe next year could be a break through year. Hopefully, because he is a very likable coach.

I think there has got to be some level of ego that would stop Self from going to Texas. Going from Kansas to Texas is a clear step down. Sure you could say, but they paid me so much money (which I'm sure they would), but how much money does Self need? Is a little more, that I'm never going to get around to spending, worth that ego hit?

To me, if Self is not happy, especially with potential health challenges, he just retires. He could easily get a studio job and stay around the game, still making tons of money. Or he could just go enjoy all that money he's made and take it easy.

Thanks for the information. Hopefully they continue to build off of how the season ended for next year.

Gonna be ever harder when he produces talent like All Wright that gets called up to the big leagues.
Those mid-major coaches have a hard row to hoe..

True.

But on the flip side maybe he can sell this to recruits. Come develop under me and it'll open up options for you. Similar to putting kids in the NBA for high-majors.
