This is 100% true … Oats would never leave Bama for a Tier 2 at best Big Ten job and a school who doesn’t have an AD …

Would Oats leave for the right job ? Yes … He’s got a list … He’s not exactly thrilled about having to beg to get P Murph a raise and beg for NIL money … He doesn’t enjoy it … He thinks he’s had enough success to where he should supported more than he is and it shouldn’t be a struggle to get it …
I salivate at the thoughts of what Oats could do here, if the job were to open. Oats will kill it with the resources that we provide.

I disagree, Given that our offense turned into a punch line for MM commentators (They shoot more than most but make less than most), an assistant not named Underwood would be demoted or fired. The kerfuffle is that this doesn't seem to be even considered due to nepotism. Everywhere I've even worked, an employee that gets fired and deserved it is news for a day. An employee that can't seem to get fired whatever they screw up is news for the duration.

But hey, Hammer is more of a kerfuffle than Tyler and unless I've missed a love child angle, thats not really nepotism.

Yeah…this one didn’t smell right from the beginning. I’ve got several friends/connections in MD and that place sounds like a circus. He could have had way better jobs than that.

Even if the job wasn’t open … If Oats wanted to come … It should be …
Hypothetically speaking, how much buyout money would it take to pay off Underwood AND get Oats to Champaign?

Again, hypothetically, because I don't see a realistic scenario of anything like this happening.

I'm just rooting for Buzz to Maryland so A&M opens up. Resources to pay a buyout shouldn't be an issue there unless they need more for football.

That's a valid question. I think people would be questioning him based on age and experience in light of the fact that our offense seemed over reliant on threes, but the heat would be almost certainly less if the nepotism angle wasn't an issue.

I also know nothing of whatever other rumors are floating around about him and players and have no idea if that would change if he weren't an Underwood.
The players that aren't "me guys" like Tyler. Tyler got into it with Tre because Tre wanted to be in ball screen actions shooting mid-range jumpers. Same goes when Rez and DGL didn't get the roles they wanted. Tyler is trying to win games.

I asked 2 different players about Tyler and they said he's well liked and helped lots of guys understand basketball at a deeper level this year, this rumor has to be put to rest.

Side note if his last name wasn't Underwood EVRYONE WOULD BE SALIVATING OVER THE FACT THAT OUR FIFTH AC, THAT WE PAY $120,000, has a top 20 offense. ONE HUNDRED FREAKING TWENTY K. It's insane to me the Tyler hate.

Side side note: We lose more games if we give those three players what they want. Point freaking blank. Stop the Tyler hate. Blame Tim for promising those guys roles they didn't get.

Rant over. Peace.

THANK-YOU. I don't get the Tyler hate, either.

Offense. Has. Not. Been. The. Problem. Could we have not jacked up as many threes in certain games? Yes, but overall we've been great on offense.

Hamer is the one who needs to go. Defense has regressed since he took over. And not just year to year, but over the course of each of the past two seasons.

This is the main counter-argument that I haven't seen raised until this post, and I think is a very good point. Now, presumably that means that we would have more money available for other top-tier assistants - and we did get OA last year and we spent a lot to do it. We'll see how his recruiting chops pan out this offseason, along with any other potential assistant changes.

Also, I value ALL of the insider comments and perspectives, so thanks to all of you for chiming in.

Appreciate your insights, but the blame ultimately lies with Brad. He is the person who gets the final say with roster construction and player roles. There are larger issues if promises are being made from lower-level staff (assistant coaches) to recruits that do not fit in with the general game strategy. Tim is gone now, so hopefully that is resolved. Sounds like we need to start recruiting players that are not "me guys". The problem is in the day and age of NIL, good luck consistently finding those players.

I've gone back and forth on the Tyler U thing. Can't argue with the positive results on Offense. Can't argue AT ALL on the cost to have him on staff. Still, is there any reason why we cannot bring in a highly experienced Offensive guy to help him learn more/better? Heck, bring in an O guy AND give Tyler a raise! That person could/should also be a good recruiter and skill development guy. And we don't even need to waste words on the Defense, that absolutely needs to change via a Yaklich, Boynton, or similar coach to take charge.

all fair points, and helpful to know. But I'm still left feeling the same way I did at the time he was hired- When you hire your son-who at the time had basically no qualifications to be hired at Illinois-nepotism is going to bring undesired criticism to your program.

There will always be questions about Tyler because of perceived and real nepotism. 0 chance Tyler gets the assistant coach role he has with our team if he isn't Underwood's son. And that will ALWAYS remain a problem IMO. Are we really all that surprised he's getting hate?

I'll add this as well: The coaching business is an unbelievable grind in which people work insane amounts of hours, grind, do thankless jobs, etc.. before they ever get legit opportunities. To have a highly sought after assistant position at one of the top basketball schools in the country- with no resume and very little, if any grind put in-it's going to create some sour grapes.

I was hoping, too, for a quick hire into that position. A good hire, not just a quick one. I'd like to see next year's staff get solidified ASAP in order to help elevate player recruitment.

One average year at FIU.
One 4th place finish in the B10 while at Minnesota and didn’t finish above 7th in any other year. 1 tourney win in 8 years at the job.
Finished 10th, 6th, 6th and finally 1st this year at New Mexico. One tournament win this year.
That’s a very mediocre resume.
Turning a 10th place team into conference champions in 3 years is mediocre? Huh?

Thank you! This puts a different perspective on the rumors.

He who hesitates loses. Now is the time for Josh to go all in and get Oats. If he waits one year who is to say Oats gets the Michigan State job next Spring? Or the Wisconsin job?

Board is gonna learn to respect Sharpshot16 this off season! Not as frequent of a poster as some of the other insiders but he has never missed. Real ones know already.
