Given the market, if I'm the Cubs, forget trading for a third baseman. Let Shaw do his thing.

They're clearly going to need bench help in the infield and outfield. Can't survive an entire season with Turner, Brujan and Berti being your only options. In the outfield, they're version of giving a guy the day off is making him the DH. That's where being cheap comes into play.

Then, they need to find another arm or two in the pen. Outside of Theilbar, Keller and Palencia....the rest is questionable.....and that's being kind.

There just aren't enough quality starters on the market. At least, nobody worth giving up a top prospect for. Get Taillon back, get into the playoffs and see what happens.

Further news? The last I heard is that he's still undergoing treatment. Has there been regression?
Nothing concrete but Lester yesterday and Hoyer today specifically mentioned him and he went on Instagram 4 days ago to say he is prioritizing spending time with family and friends.
Sadly, it doesn't sound too good. I pray I'm wrong.

I’m going to assume when you say another arm or two, you mean quality, dependable RPs. Those don’t come particularly cheap at this time of the year either. Here’s a list of the relievers that were traded at 2024 deadline, and I wouldn’t consider all of these quality or dependable. For instance, Leiter was merely OK with Cubs and then terrible with NYY — 4.98 ERA, 1.71 WHIP.

Tanner Scott and Hoeing — Padres #2, 4, 5, 24 prospects
Luis Garcia — Red Sox #17 prospect plus 3 other prospects
Gregory Soto — Orioles #8 prospect plus another prospect
Tanner Banks — Phillies #11 prospect
Huascar Brazoban — Mets #22 prospect
Andrew Chafin — Rangers #27 prospect plus another prospect
Paul Blackburn — Mets #25 prospect
JT Chargois — Mariners prospect
Lucas Erceg — Royals #4, #18, and another prospect
Lucas Sims — Red Sox prospect
Mark Leiter, Jr — Cubs current #14 and #22 prospects
Jason Adam — Padres #3, 8 and 12 prospects
Carlos Estevez — Phillies #23 and 28 prospects
Nick Mears — Brewers #17 and another prospect
Nate Pearson — Cubs #23 and 29 prospects
Ryne Stanek — Mets #30 prospect
Yimi Garcia — Mariners #10 prospect plus another prospect
AJ Puk — Arizona #14 and #30 prospects
Hunter Harvey — Royals #2 and another prospect

Brewers have already caught us, we are having a bullpen + minor league pitching game vs a tough lefty and PCA is hurt.

Our DH who isn't good enough to play corner outfield defense is also playing center field tonight.

Things are not looking great.

That's because managers are worth nothing.

A good grounds crew is probably worth more to a major league baseball team than a 'good' manager.

The debate is more whether a good manager keeps playing Justin Turner.

Maddon is widely regarded as a "great" manager, and yet he pitched Chapman in a 9-2 lead and gassed him and nearly cost the Cubs the world series. There are little kids that knew that was a bad idea at the time.

Aw shux, our minor league pitcher can’t hold it down against the worst offense in the sport

Ah well, these games aren’t important or anything!

Big market team running out 7 ERA pitchers and DH’s in centerfield!
