I can't lie, I take an extremely dim view of coaches who don't "like" coaching in the current college football landscape.

💯 this hire gives me Tony Peterson vibes

I think Hauck will tweak 3-3-5 to take advantage of our depth in secondary.

Rutgers just hired SD hc prior DC.

I like Hauck better.

Hopefully he will spend summer in NE learning

It's important to remember Coach B said the DC is going to be in full control of the defense. While Hauck has never been a DC, the 3-3-5 he's been running at Montana is the defense he brought with him from San Diego State. So it's absolutely his defense he's bringing with him to Illinois and will implement. Additionally, his brother Tim was a 13 year vet in the NFL and was co-DC under Bobby at Montana the last couple seasons. I wonder if Tim will be coming with.

Yes in the sense of being a weird fit with no apparent ties to Bielema.

But the problem with Tony Petersen is that he had lots of immediate FBS experience as an OC, and it was very underwhelming. So it was like, uh oh, there are pretty serious doubts about the exact thing we're having him do.

Hauck has been one of the best FCS coaches for years, but what does that have to do with being Illinois' defensive coordinator, a position he's never held anywhere?

Obviously the idea is to give him his X's and O's sandbox to implement his scheme and leave the program-running hassles to others who are more eager and better qualified. So far so good, a lot of great coordinators are like that. But Hauck's been a head coach for most of this century, isn't the program-running stuff what his core competency is?

Did he call the defense when he was the HC? With his age it guessing he will only be here a few years. personally I would’ve liked Karl Scott as the DC.

He has a lot of experience hopefully we can land a stud DL coach now.

He’s going to bring over his 3-3-5 defense
Is this very similar to the system Partridge would’ve brought in? If so, that’s cool…just want to reconcile the decision with Bret’s press conference around the type of new system that he’d be learning too.

BB deserves my trust on this one, but my goodness, this is definitely not an inspiring read.

"Dealing with agents and the transient nature of this and the lack of forward thinking by young people, which has never been a strong suit for centuries for young people. ... But now when they’ve got adults pushing them and pulling them in different directions, I kind of got tired of that." - welcome to every year of the rest of your coaching life, Bobby.

Your thoughts on this hire?
A very successful head coach who has taught this scheme to players and coaches for years. He gets a significant raise without the headaches of recruiting as a HC. You’ll see a much different style of defense next year.(I’m trying to figure out if he called the defense when he became a HC or not) but overall I think it’s a solid hire.

Not feeling great about this hire……but no one though Cignetti would work out at Indiana either

Can confirm … Partidge backed out on the deal … I won’t go into any further details other than saying … A man’s word is supposed to mean something … And it just doesn’t mean what it used to anymore …

Charlie has also told Bret he’s staying in the NFL whether that be as DC or taking spot on Harbaugh staff …
Totally get there’s nothing Brett can do about a guy backing out but this looks like a bit of a mess. I thought it was implied that we were switching to Seattle’s scheme.
