That's really not accurate at all. Cal's placement in the Pac 12 since 2002

2014- 7
2013- 4
2012- 3
2011- 5
2010- 1
2009- 4
2008- 9
2007- 8
2006- 3
2005- 9
2004- 5
2003- 3
2002- 2

Average 4.84= More a top 5ish.

Martin is:

2015- 8
2016- 3
2017- 5th in progress.

I had heard the opposite: that Colangelo remains fairly disinterested in the hoops program. If something changed, I'd be interested to find out what happened.

Guenther and Jerry are really close and Whitman takes advice from Guenther.

I don't think Guenther was capable of making the Lovie hire. Josh may consult with Guenther but he's obviously a much more capable AD. This next hire will be just as big. Will Josh be our Pat Richter?

I seriously just lost a lot of respect for Whitman if this is true. Guenther is still finding ways to be the anchor strapped to the UIUC athletic department.

Keep in mind the two coaching hires that made a legend of Pat Richter were a guy with no head coaching experience and only two years experience as a defensive coordinator and a Division III coach whose two year foray into D1 with UW-Milwaukee netted a 30-27 (13-15) record.

It's not the flashy hire, it's the right hire. The two can be the same person sometimes, but know the difference.

There is ALWAYS next years recruits coming in. We give him another year because of the '17 class and miss the dance and then oh no we can't fire him we will lose our '18 class and so on. At a certain point you have to bite the bullet and understand that there may be some short term pain involved.

The only slight way I bring Groce back is if plays the young guys to get a them some experience. And it's still a great night shot.

Oh no worries. I want the team to win and don't want to have to do this again. It's my fear that we will just be mediocre under Martin because that's about where his teams usually play.

That 2010 conference title was their first since 1960. Calling them a "top 3 team" in the PAC-12 is a bit over the top.

I think if you run an offensive system that is predicated on having superior talent and then don't acquire it you need to adjust. I think this team is well suited to Bo Ryan's swing offense. Bigs that can shoot, bigger bodies wings, general lack of quickness, etc. I think Bo would have us 4-3 in conference play at worst and at least one more win (Wintrop) outside of the Big Ten. There is a good amount of individual talent here- cupboard is definitely not bare.

This is a good point. I don't know about the defensive side, but running the swing offense and having Malcolm post guys up from the 2 or 3 position, with Mav and Finke pulling the bigs away from the lane could be great. Of course, neither TJL, JCL, Tracy or Tate have the size Bo would look for in a guard... and nobody on our team aside from maybe Kip and Leron play defense like Bo demanded.

What's a bit over the top is calling Martin a plan A guy. If he is a plan A then we have a low bar

Are there any true "Plan A" guys out there? Unlike the last time Illinois needed to hire a coach, there really aren't any huge names in the mid-major world out there like Shaka or Stevens.

A case could be made for Tony Bennett I guess, but even that wouldn't have me really celebrating. And there's really no chance of that happening.
