Dan Majerle would be a fairly exciting hire. He's off to an awesome start at Grand Canyon University.

Had some down time at work so I actually looked into this. From some quick googling, there are 3 P5 coaches who have been with their current teams for 3+ years and have a worse conference winning percentage than John Groce.

Pat Chambers .282
Andy Enfield .323
Tim Miles .376

And in the case of Andy Enfield, his first two seasons he went 5-31 in conference. Now he led USC to the tournament last year and they are well on their way again this year.

if you have $$$ laying around buy the stock "LOPE" traded on Nasdaq...I believe it's around $57.00 per share.......BUT, they haven't even been allowed into the NCAA $$$ pot yet, that is next year. Plus I believe an invite to join the WAC?

Any idea how an exciting team, who has given some big names already a run for their money at times, might fare once they are allowed to play along full blown? Stock could blow up!

Not making a case to retain Groce. But,

could go on, and I'm not cherry-picking statistics to fit my narrative. I challenge anyone to find a statistic that places John Groce's Illini teams favorably in our history.

The stats you provided were from previous years with teams that were not as talented as the one we will have next year. So, per your argument, we should retain Groce, because the chances of Us doing better are rather large.

I think you need to make a case that Groce would maintain those stats no matter how talented the team is.

I feel like that's a fairly risky investment. For-profit colleges and universities have been struggling lately under (justified) increased scrutiny. GCU has done well but it isn't without its share of controversy.

If Groce comes back next year, we'll be projected 13th or 14th in the conference at best. Heck, we're going to finish there this year with a veteran team, let alone with new freshmen and without really known upper class leadership. I honestly think the only way Whitman keeps Groce is to set him up to fail next year, which doesn't make much sense at all seeing what he's about.

Whitman has a plan already, let's just let it play out.

No matter who the coach is I think we are at least a middle of the pack team in the league next year. I think next year you have more playmakers and a big in Tillmon. Lucas, Frazier, JCL, Kipper, Black, Finke, Tillmon and hopefully a 5th year Big is a pretty good top 8 players. Smith is still a possibility, I see a l see a lot of potential in this group

The good news for the next Illini coach, whomever it may be, is that it might be impossible to do worse than Groce has. MAYBE, if there are another rash of injuries to an even less experienced team, but I'd guess that this year's record is about the floor for next year's team, too. So, you're bound to look like at least a step up. Then you can claim you "improved Illinois" while you were here and call it a win!

Pretty sure most had the same expectation for this year.

Not sure about that, don't forget that Groce started very well overachieving and looking like a star early on. Whoever the next coach, he will succeed two unsuccessful coaches and fans will expect quick results. Fans will not have the patience for a slower rebuild.

Yeah. We've lost 4 straight to Penn State and Nebraska and Enfield has USC on the right side of the bubble looking at a 9 seed. So we look like the worst of those 4 right now.

I've read all of this thread, but I have a gut feeling that Groce will be given one more year. They're not going to take a chance of losing this recruited class.
