Well, that similarity includes the commitment to playing dreadful, ugly basketball. There's no sugarcoating that with Cuonzo. You can win that way, but you won't be aesthetically pleasing while doing it.

That's true. Of course Wisky and MSU don't often look like ballet out there either. Purdue plays UFC ball when they are trying to be gentle.

It's all a thing of beauty when you are winning.

Not saying I love Martin's style, but I would rather win ugly than lose pretty. Right now we are losing and playing pretty ugly, so really can only improve from here.

There would certainly be worse hires than Martin but his success to date has been pretty meh.

It could be that he hasn't found the right situation and maybe his home state could provide that

I still think Groce stays, but 1-2 assistants are gone. Not enough out some of the coaches regarding recruiting or teaching to retain the same 4.
This is the absolute very least. Ford hasn't done a whole lot with his infamous Canadian pipeline and I don't think Parham has really done a whole lot to help with Chicago. I'd still like more out of bigs and wings so their teaching also seems subpar.
Here's a controversial one, unless it's been brought up already: Jerrance Howard.

I brought him up in my rambling post. Worth a mention but not my first or second choice.

This is a little different situation compared to football where we basically had an interim coach and Whitman had some connections from his own playing days. It would be nice to send out those feelers to gauge interest in the job from high level guys before firing Groce.

I also like the Hurley and Keatts ideas. I know Martin is a good recruiter but I'm not in the know as far as his X's and O's go. With having Jaylen Brown and Ivan Rabb last year, you'd think it would have been better than a first round exit.

I know Whitman has connections to the NFL, but he got Lovie Smith to come to Illinois. Even with connections, that's still a very bold move and a big feat.

I have faith that JW will not only make the right call after this season, but that he will make a great hire if one needs to be made.

Thomas never really seemed on top of things or in control; Too many people had too easy a time saying no. JW strikes me as the exact opposite.

That is the reason I am still looking at the guys most say are unreachable, like Marshall and Jacobson. If the worst we end up with is Miller, we are still a big winner.

Sorry to sound so negative about Groce staying...I really am.

I agree. I don't think he has done a ton at this point to cement himself as a great coach. I wouldn't consider him a homerun or a complete whiff. He would be a sort of safe but unconvincing hire.

I'll take Archie Miller...he's tough, recruits well and a winner in the competitive A10. He makes a little over $1Mil vs. Groce at $1.7Mil

Miller, now 38, was named the Flyer coach in April 2011. His five-year record of 115 wins and 55 losses includes four trips to the post season, three consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament and an Elite Eight run in 2014.

The three straight NCAA berths mark the first time that has happened at Dayton in 49 years.

With three NCAA wins in 2014 and another two in 2015, Dayton was one of just six teams to have at least five NCAA tournament wins in those two years. The others were Arizona, UConn, Kentucky, Michigan State and Wisconsin.

This is sports-agent level salesmanship. From your post to JW's ears...or eyes...or whatever sense it takes.

+1 thank you. A successful mid major coach like a Gregg Marshall would be a great hire in my opinion.

He sure would. But first you said you'd love the Rev, who is a far cry from a successful mid-major coach, not even a head coach. Then you said you'd take either a successful mid-major coach or an Illinois guy. The right mid-major coach is not in question; taking someone so obviously unqualified because he's an Illinois guy is a bad idea (again, IMO).

Wouldn't Gregg Marshall coming to Illinois be like Chris Peterson from Boise State going to Washington?

Throw me in for Ben Jacobson

Did you know that if we would have had a competent AD back in 2003, Groce would have been on our staff for the 05 run as an assistant and lead recruiter? Think about it.
If you still don't get it or know who the head coach would have been, just imagine if Oden and Conley would have been recruited to Illinois.

Thad Matta wanted the Illinois job?

Thad Matta wanted the Illinois job?

I don't see why he wouldn't have. He grew up an hour north of Champaign. I know a guy who knew Matta but he tried to tell me that Matta never wanted the Illinois job. I always take what he says with a grain of salt though because he hates Illinois.

Why would Donovan or Stevens leave a successful NBA team for Illinois? That's not even worth asking

I know it's silly, but there is a list of college guys who decided the NBA wasn't their cup of tea after a few years.

The longest of longshots, but I ask anyway. What have you got to lose?

Kanye West song - "I love Kanye". Insert name (john groce, drose), add lyrics, get laughs. Works on me anyways.

I should have clarified. I'm confused about the Chris Petersen/Gregg Marshall comparison

I have heard from several pro Illinois fans that say they no Matta and this is what they say as well. He was never that interested in Illinois. Hard to say for sure in hindsight.
