Actually a more accurate scenario would be Keatts taking the UI job. Pitino deciding to retire from Louisville right before the season is about to start, and then Keatts bolting for Louisville the night before the season opener.

Not sure Louisville would do that. The buyout would cut into their hooker budget.

listening to local NC sports radio (David Glenn) over lunch & they were all over NC State firing Gottfried & that they have reached out to Miller. Discussion sounded a lot like here, mentioned getting a mid-major, specifically Miller, Cronin, Marshall; for what it is worth his opinion was Miller wouldn't take the NC State job & they would strike out on all 3. Thought Keatts was a possibility. For what it is worth, he said his sources weren't saying Gottfried was done as in already fired, just not announced.

It won't happen, but I would LOVE if Miller denies NC State because of the shltshow that is their athletic leadership and came here instead ... would finally give Illini Nation some of its swagger back!

So Monty Williams is going to get hired. He's going to stay for four years, win one B1G title then bolt for the NBA. Then JW will hire Kevin Keatts. Please tell me that he isn't going to bolt for the Louisville job when Pitino retires. :hurl:
After that JW will be so jaded that he will look for a safe hire that will never want to leave. We will then hire Bruce Webber again.

Ah, that link is blocked at work ... guess I'll have something to look forward to reading when I get home now! (Happy Valentine's Day...:cool:)

You aren't missing much. It's basically a watered down version of what we already know on here, with grammar and logical structure that more properly belongs on a message board than as an article on a website.

Groce will coach at Illinois next year. Whitman will not replace him without that perfect replacement hire, that creates excitement around program, like Lovie.
And, does anyone really think that Mont Williams with no connections to ILL is coming here, or Archie Miller or Marshall who have turned down some big school ffers over the years. Maybe, maybe, maybe Cuonzo Martin is long shot with Midwest ties. But really leaving Cal who just supported him with contract thru 2021. Really. Nope, Groce will be with ILL in 2017-2018. Whitman supports him. Likes his recruits. And simply not home run hire. Support Groce. Go ILL.

Serious question: What are some big names that are (or at least are more) available a year from now?

I understand the thought process behind the question, but there is no means to actually answer this that wouldn't yield the same list as right now minus anyone who has been hired this cycle.

Doesnt matter. You fire the coach immediately and MOVE ON. The quicker you rip the bandaid the easier the healing process will become

You are assuming that Groce will somehow manage to make a cohesive team out of this year's remnants and the new recruits. And assuming that the new recruits will be able to make an immediate impact. Groce already had a Top 20 recruiting class in 2013 with 6 ranked players, plus Te'Jon Lucas, DJ Williams, and Kipper Nichols. What has he done since 2013? Bupkus. No Big Ten Championships. No NCAA appearances. What's worse is that Illinois isn't even in the conversation for the Big Ten title.

Is it worth Groce further damaging the program just to keep some recruits who may or many not stay with the program after he's gone?

I think Groce can build a cohesive team next year. But they'll still finish 6-12 in the Big Ten.

You're right. I forgot to add in that the OP was assuming that Groce can get the team to play two halves worth of dominant and consistent offense and defense.

I will support Groce in finding a new job.

Not that I'm necessarily rooting for it, but I think the likelihood of Groce staying is >/= the chance of landing some of the names mentioned in this thread.

No need to harpoon the poster with a dissenting opinion. Some of the logic in that post actually holds up.
