Pitching matchups for this weekend's HUGE series at Wrigley:

Friday: Martinez (11-10, 3.33) vs. Lackey (11-11, 4.65)
Saturday: Wacha (12-7, 3.99) vs. Hendricks (6-5, 3.35)
Sunday: Lynn (11-7, 3.01) vs. Quintana (10-11, 4.25)

Thoughts?

Wrigley should be electric. Luckily the 4 game series at Busch in 10 days kind of serves as a safety net. Definitely a very important series, but losing 2 of 3 isn't the end of the world. Just don't get swept.

Win today's match up (by far the most advantageous) or the season is over. Unless they win the next 2 :)

Not sure where else to go with this, but its looking more and more like we are leading the Stanton sweepstakes. Who would you all be willing to deal out of the prospects to get him? Reyes? Kelly? Bader?

I would. We do have great pitching depth, although I’d love to see what Reyes can bring with the birds. Hopefully he wouldn’t be included if this comes to fruition. I’d doubt that the Marlins will be looking at positional players, I think they want young pitching. We do have some organizational depth throughout, but Stanton provides something we don’t have anywhere.

Stanton would be huge. I would give up 1 pitcher (not CMart) and 1 outfielder of their choice. I doubt Reyes would be their choice, coming of TJ surgery would be a risk. If more is required, because they are going to eat a bunch of contract, then start looking at those on the 40 man roster that don't have a clear path to the big league club.

What might that be? Players willing to be seen wearing get-ups like this?!?!? :D

Bader for sure. Probably willing to let go of Reyes, but would prefer we somehow keep him. Kelly I'm really hesitant to let go. Yadi is gonna break down sooner than later.

What you seem to be ignoring is that Stanton has a full no-trade clause. So - even if the Marlins want to deal with the Cardinals, Stanton has to agree to go. He has already expressed that he'd prefer either of the coasts.

I thought I read that he said he didn't want to go to the East coast, but would like the West coast. St. Louis is the gateway to the West, right?

If I were forced to place a bet on his destination, I'd put my money on San Francisco.

I’m with you, but SF and say Boston do not have the young pitching that will be coveted by the Marlins. I️ don’t think STL would be his first choice, but hopefully he would agree since other coastal team don’t have the depth to trade and Miami isn’t winning any time soon. How much will Miami pick up on that contract is a huge stumbling block as well.

Another thing to consider about Stanton in SF, rumor is the Giants are actively pursuing Heyward. I️ can’t see the Giants taking on two huge contracts on players that as of right now play the same position.

Hot Take (but not really cause its true):

Stanton is going to be a Cardinal in < 4 weeks, maybe even next week at GM meetings.

The price will be Grichuk and either Reyes/Weaver if the Marlins are picking up $60mil+ of the contract or a lesser pitching prospect (Flaherty, Alcantara, etc.) if they're picking up $50Mil or less.

Giants won't do it, they have like $80Mil in payroll coming off the books after this year which frees them up to bid for the 2019 FA class (Harper, Machado, bunch of other awesome players) so they're not committing to Stanton's money (or Heyward for that matter). Stanton does have the no-trade clause, but what leverage does he really have? If the choice is either stay on a crappy Marlins team because they had to cut payroll elsewhere or go to StL with a real chance a winning a ring, then is that really even a decision?

I am scared Dombroski (red sox) will do something crazy, but I doubt it. Stanton to the Cardinals makes too much sense to not happen.

He's from LA and has played his entire career in Miami. St. Louis doesn't really measure up to those 2 locales from a non-baseball perspective.

That's why I'm saying he has very little leverage. If he tells the Marlins "I will only go to the Dodgers" and the Marlins come back and say "the Dodgers did not make an adequate offer" and instead they ship out Yelich, Ozuna, Dee Gordon and Prado (because the explicitly have to cut payroll), then he's stuck playing on a very bad team with a bad relationship with his management team.

I also believe that if he's explicitly said "I will only go to team X, Y, or Z" then we would have already heard that the Cardinals were not one of those teams and these rumors would be dead.

I agree with most of this, I just don't see the Marlins wanting Reyes, until he proves he recovered. TJ surgery, despite it's high success rate, is still not 100%.

And apparently at this point he has never said that he does NOT want to go to the Cardinals.

The Marlins might as well slow walk this. I doubt they get much in return for Stanton but they will get him moved and the dollars off their payroll.

If we have to give up much, I'd rather have Yelich for the money. We need an a lot of other pieces too.

I think Stanton will play out a lot like Verlander with the Tigers. The general perception will be that the Marlins can get either prospects or money. They'll hold out for both and eventually get it much like the Tigers eventually got prospects and money from the Astros.

Stanton is great. But if we miss out.... We get to keep two great young pitching prospects. I'd rather add a bat through free agency and keep our young prospects. We had a load of young arms a few years ago and 1/2 never panned out. So if those percentages stay same. You're looking at only one or two of these guys will make a solid starter. Keep them all cull them later. If you end up with a staff of aces like the 90's braves , awesome

It's not hard to imagine the Dodgers trading Puig for Stanton.

Puig is only under contract next year and comes with a $9Mil salary. The Marlins are shedding payroll and trying to get prospects or at least cost controlled MLB talent, Puig is the opposite of both of those. The Dodgers don't need Stanton, don't seem to really want Stanton, and are really only included in the rumors because that seems to be where Stanton himself wants to end up.

I think Stanton will play out a lot like Verlander with the Tigers. The general perception will be that the Marlins can get either prospects or money. They'll hold out for both and eventually get it much like the Tigers eventually got prospects and money from the Astros.

I'm still thinking it's the Cardinals. Verlander's contract situation was "potential bad deal for 3 years", which is a lot different than "potential bad deal for 10 years and $300mil". GM meetings are starting and I wouldn't be surprised if the deal is done this week. The Red Sox are really the only team that could have a fit if they deal Jackie Bradley Jr., but the Cardinals have more prospects to offer and the Sox seem like they're only included as leverage to JD Martinez's agent.

I agree with the bolded, I think the Cards will push to get it done by 11/20, so they can thin out the 40 man roster a bit, prior to the deadline. Maybe a 3 for 1 type arrangement.

I'm going to double down on the Dodgers in the Stanton Sweepstakes.

I think the Cards want to deal prospects (Avoid some Rule 5 issues) and have Miami eat some of the $$$$.

I predict the Dodgers take on all the salary and give minimal value in Puig to Miami.

I hope I'm wrong and the Dodgers refuse to take all of his contract. In that case, Cardinals have a lot of prospects. I just think Miami wants the biggest salary dump.
