This talk about keeping Lovie if he reaches X wins is what I argued against before the season began. If a defender on Nebraska and EMU slipped and fell, Illinois could be 4-0, without any change by the coaches. Illinois could get blown out by Wisconsin, Iowa and the Michigan's, yet still get 4 more wins against Minnesota, Rutgers, Purdue and Northwestern. That's fool's gold. Purdue, Minnesota and Northwestern are down this year, as is Nebraska, but that won't be for long. Lovie has one of the easiest schedules any Illinois coach has possibly ever had, plenty of time to bring in his players and coaches, and yet it still looks like a struggle to be literally average. If the team is not blown out in any games and wins some of these others, then that will demonstrate improvement.

I like the Fool's Gold bit. I feel like we could finish 5-7 and many would see that as **IMPROVEMENT!**

We have not improved as a team... we are just finding different ways to avoid success.

Just thinking about how our former AD fired the football coach who last took us to the Rose Bowl, and the hoops coach who got to the NCAA final, because neither was “good enough.” Replaced both with clowns from the MAC, and look at us now. Doh!

My biggest reason i want Lovie gone is because an empty chair could coach next years team to a 6-6 record--by far the easiest schedule we've had in who knows how long.

My biggest fear is he salvages 4 wins this year, ends strong, maybe surprises with a high 4 star recruit here or there, and they bring him back. He goes 6-6 next year with a bowl loss. What do you? I dont see Whitman firing him, but for true progress, I'd want closer to 8 wins.

If Lovie can pull off 5 wins this year, I think I'm ok with him coming back at this point. NW, Rutgers, PU, and Minny are all chances to win. Realistically I see one win out of those 4.

Regarding triple option v air raid discussion: I’ve always thought that the path to consistent success in the BIG requires a strong running game. I don’t think that has changed.

I think the air raid gets fans confused because the name. Still plenty of running the football in the offense. Its about having to respect the run in order to open up the passing game as is with most offenses. Art Briles did that really well running the air raid at baylor.

Bad weather does make passing precision tricky though. It's not like Big Ten games are wind-whipping frozen tundras every week, but at the margin it's more difficult to run a sideline-to-sideline chucking offense than other conferences. One great advantage of the air raid is its ability to use high-percentage passes across the length of the field as a sort of quasi-running game, Leach in particular has been boundary-pushing in that regard.

Your last sentence pretty much describes Illinois football since Tepper was hired save a precious few bright spots.

Love seeing the discussions based on the two scenarios. Many of you nailed it straight on the head.

6-6 is fools gold.

My biggest fear is that Lovie wins 5-6 games and outsiders see it as a form of improvement with Lovie being retained.

Even though we KNOW most mediocre staffs could fall into 5 or 6 wins with the schedule we have.

There are bigger problems to be assessed with this staff than just win totals.

An actual P5 staff could take this roster to 8 wins next season...
So am I rooting for a 4 win season? I don't know. But there is a battle going on between my heart and my mind.

Being an Illini fan is rough.

Yeah a big tennet of the Air Raid is passing to open up the run, which is opposite of what the historical mentality was.

I think my only complaint about it is being unable to really control the tempo of a game. You see it a couple of games a year where a team with a big lead will squander it.

Hindsight is 20/20. Both of them were sliding rapidly (Zook w/ first ever 6 wins followed by 6 losses with a team that quit on him the last couple games, Weber with a horrible record and a team that also quit on him). His hires were poorly researched, but that does not negate the fact that those two needed to go.

A quick google search would have toldyou not to hire Beckman.

100%. I still argue that the biggest piece of evidence that it was a bad hire was that only 2 (maybe 3?) of his assistants came with. Really? Why would they not jump at the chance to more than double their pay? Oh yeah, because he's going to get fired in a few years...

Any chance you can be involved in the interview process whenever the next go-around is? If nothing else to weed out the complete goofballs.
Yeah, that would be nice!

Fortunately, I don't think Whitman is going to hire a clown. His hires so far have at least been pretty competent at the microphone.

We have exceeded our lifetime quota of clowns at this point.

Didn't someone once recommend a Tim Beckman clown as our new mascot?

There are plenty of reasons to crap on the Beckman hire but this isn't one of them, IMO. This belief stems from the Campbell success after-the-fact. Campbell got the head coaching gig at Toledo after Beckman left, can't fault him for staying. Can't fault his offensive guys sticking with Campbell because they ran the same offense. Beckman is a defensive guy by trade and wanted to (initially) run his own defense so he wanted a bigger focus on recruiting. He also hired some guys that looked like great hires at the time. Hired Banks and Gilmore from Cincinnati at their height of program success. Brought Ward, Clinkscale, and Golesh (offense) with him. Filled out the staff with Gonzales and Beatty for their recruiting acumen (probably should have brought someone in with an offensive philosophy, to say the least). Funny thing is almost all of these coaches are at P5 programs right now (besides Ward, who's back at Toledo). Also seems like a double standard because Zook brought very few personnel with him from Florida (was Body by Lou the only one?) and that was never a complaint with Zook's tenure.
