Georgia football = national champs. Florida football has not been good since Urban left.

Not sure if taking the GA job is going to be any better for White. He does appear to be a solid coach. Not many schools complain about going to the NCAAs every year. You get fired for not making the NCAAs.

I am not sure Duke post coach K is a powerhouse. UCLA has never really regained the Wooden glamor. Indiana has not been the same since Knight was fired. UNC was respectable but not the power it was under Dean Smith. Florida post Donovan is good but not great. Georgetown post Thompson has been abysmal.

The outlier is Self replacing Williams at Kansas.
You might want to check the stats on North Carolina. Roy got as many Natty's as Dean in half the time (18 years vs 36). Williams has 9 regular season championships to Dean's 17. Roy's winning percentage (both in and out of conference) is moderately lower than Smith's, but it's not a big dropoff.

Billy Donovan was arguably top 5 in history college coach. His sucess during that 15 years at Florida rank up there with coach K, Rick Pittino KY. Hard act to follow. Bill Self did it at Kansas but that is an exception.

NCAA 5 out of 7 years is pretty good. Mike White's replacement might not be as successful.

Lon Kruger (good) Bill Self (great) Bruce Weber (average) John Groce (bad) Brad Underwood (good->great?). Hiring college coaches is a crap shoot. I think GA did well - I would rate White as good.
White was fine but the trajectory at Florida was not great. His best season was his 2nd and since then he has a 49-39 conference record, which is, again, fine, but not great. He hasn't had a 20 win season since 2018-2019 and that year he went 9-9 in conference and finished 8th in the SEC. I don't think this warrants him having been on the hotseat just yet, but I think the program was not heading in the right direction.

I have absolutely nothing to back this up but my own perception and a generalized reputation of both coaches stylistically…
BUT I’ve always found it a bit puzzling that
Roy being a disciple of Dean wasn’t more of a defensive-minded coach. Dean was quite an innovator on both sides of the ball. Whereas, Roy seems to be very offensive minded. Anyways, in the absence of defensive analytical data from 1970-whatever…that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

William’s results DO speak for themselves…and you could certainly do a lot worse than Roy Williams.

The coach before Roy who was after Dean was a disaster. UNC was lucky that Roy was around salvaging the program. I fully expect the new Duke coach gets run out of town soon enough. Whom will Duke turn to when that happens? Chrissy Collins?

This is a more realistic list for them. I didn't really see many people on their boards that really thought Underwood could happen. Saw a lot of people interested in Tang. Which besides having a great name, I'm shocked no one has called out that a 20 year assistant is very Weberish.
I met tang when he was recruiting one of my guys about 5-6 years ago. Got that smooth talker and charisma thing going on that it seems like a great recruiter should have.

In those few interactions with him I could see what makes him a great assistant.

He would need to go to a mid-major...
I do not agree with this at all. Northwestern is a VERY tough place to coach at. He has fielded pretty competitive teams. If he were able to go somewhere with a better recruiting footprint, he could be a good coaching hire. I don’t see any reason he could not coach at South Carolina, Missouri or K-State.

Yeah, Matt Doherty…that was a failed experiment.

Roy and the AA studies program. You cannot separate one from the other. They went back 20 years to see when it actually started, and then quit looking. I suspect UNC did not want to find a tie to saint Dean.

I don't necessarily disagree but Missery and KSU probably won't take him based on his recent record. South Carolina, well, maybe, maybe not. I would try to get this type of job to prove myself if I were him that he can take over Duke when this new coach fails.

Not that it matters but why wouldn't Chrissy Collins jump ship to get himself ready to be the next Duke HC (if he is very lucky to have success in his next stop)?
I wonder if Collins thought that he could turn Northwestern into a Duke Light with his Duke background and name recognition in Chicago. Maybe he thought that would then make him the next coach at Duke when K retired. I do think that Collins could be a successful college coach at another P5 school, at least one with less restriction

He probably was thinking of more success after that tournament year but now he is stuck. He is turning himself into Bill Carmody.

Next year will be really telling for Duke. Scheyer's been a fantastic recruiter and has another crazy good class coming in (4 five stars + Schutt), not to mention an early start on '23 too. We should know very quickly how well he can coach and whether he can keep the train moving.

Also remember this. Dean Smith coached at a time when the tournament had not expanded. However, NC like other ACC schools played in the ACC tourney. The winner was the NCAA representative. At that time there was only 1 bid per conference. In the early 70's North Carolina was number 2 behind UCLA in all polls, but ended up in the NIT, because they did not win the ACC tourney.
