I've posted a few times about wanting a stable of 6'6" to 6'8", long, athletic guys. AZ has what I was talking about.
Yep...i think we'll have a few of those ourselves in the rotation soon (Melendez and rodgers)..they are a game changer especially if they have any sort of floater game...damn near unstoppable play going to the hoop

DMW technical…. You can’t have that. That’s what I’m stuck on.
He good for one of those dumb A moves in most competitive games…huge swing there…he was sloppy with the ball numerous times as well…on the flip side made tons of nice glue guy plays...gotta lose the tough guy T’s though

Arizona shot 70% from inside the arc in the second half. That ain’t gonna cut it.
And about halfway through the second half, Illini were like 0-10 inside the arc in second half. I also heard announcers say late in second half that Trent hadn’t taken a shot for like 8 or 9 minutes. Was I hearing that right? If so, BU and company needed to let his players know Trent had to get some looks.

The no call on Kofi’s shot at 2:05 that led to the 3-1 break was simply atrocious. Obviously we had our chances after that to come back, but that was what I felt sealed the game.

Kofi being such a dominating presence doesn’t mean that fouls suddenly aren’t fouls.
He got absolutely raked across the arms and it turns into a 3-4 point swing. Ludicrous.

Kofi makes his 3 free throws, is it a different game? Hawkins needs more experience. He reaches in way too much for obvious silly fouls and seems to be thinking too much on offense. With more game time, he will improve.
IDK if he hade made the first two he wouldnt have had the second two (the second set of two was because we rebounded his miss)....so it wouldve made a 1 point difference. Maybe from a momentum perspective tho?

Getting beat on your home floor makes a statement....you are not good enough..........yet. Learn. What needs to get better is blatantly obvious....turnovers!!! Trent played his tail off but he needs help. Plummer and Kofi with 10 turnovers....team with 16. CoHawk with nothing much to add.

But the positives are becoming consistent. Need to create good habits and chuck the turnovers. Need to remember this game was played without two projected starters who we hope become big plus contributors. Hutch is our Mathurin and Curbelo is the heartbeat....or at least he can be if only....

So back to work with more confidence that there is a summit to reach....just have to learn how to compete in the thin air at the top....and this Illini team can do that.

Game was played at a frantic pace which was a good experience. But to go at that pace, at which so many elite teams play, more depth is required. Let's hope it is on the way soon.

Overall, this game was a plus in some ways and means nothing in achieving season goals. No such thing as a good loss but there is such a thing as a good learning experience. IMHO, the missing ingredient is confidence and experience. The light needs to turn on for CoHawk. Hutch and AC need to play. The big guns are there....but as any artilleryman knows...they need time to be calibrated and registered!! Can't wait for the B1G battles to start!

Agree with you to an extent..

On one hand, that dbag turbelis was flexing at him and jawing for minutes before that with no repercussions, so i get it. But on the other, yeah it was bad momentum.

I still contend that the initial foul wasnt even a foul that strated that. DMW was boxing out and turbelis fell down (shrug)

All true except Hutch is out for the year apparently.

Belo and Hutch out is starting to become worrisome. We need them to get a handful of games under their belts before we hit the Big Ten play. They both can handle the ball and that would reduce Trent having to play point. With Trent and Plummer able to focus on catch and shoot ...

I like how Jake played. 31 min , 0 turnovers. 3 assist and some big tulip outs and rebounds. He made some big shots too. I thought a few more were going diwn I love how Jake plays with few mistakes. He doesn't get us bet. Some others need to step up, pay more attention and follow his lead.

Plummer is shooting ut great and has been huge for us. If he could just clean up some of the lazy passes and turnovers it would go along way.

Got to have Coleman involved on the offensive side of the game. It seems like he doesn’t want drive the ball. Great game to watch.

That 19-0 run by the Illini was BB at it's most beautiful level of play.....
The tech by DMW really killed our momentum.....
Trent was in a zone for a long time scoring , I think , 11 or 13 straight Illini points
Plummer had another great 3 pt shooting night......
Kofi probably needs to go to carle Clinic and get xrays on his arms from the hacks he took.............
Jake had some great shots , but the last 3 pt shot was too soon......................
Kofi 's 17 ft jump shot late was not what we needed...............
Peppermint Schnapps tastes great..........................
I hate AZ on a par along with scUM and the Idiots walking , etc......................
Jake was called for a foul on that drive by Tuberville and Tuberville actually gave jake an elbow causing the bleeding...Bo missed another one...
I thought the 5 second call was eliminated years ago, but Kelly P. didn't think so
I'm high on Schnapps and now is the time for a 420 and NL # 5 attention..............

ADIOS muchacho's........................

Agree..Alot of things to point to that contributed to loss...AZ made runs, particulary in 2d half.

We competed well...could have won. Dont think we ever would have "pulled away" from AZ.

Coach Underwood will have the fellas running and searching their soul after this game. In the grand scheme, i.e. March, I think we'll see this outcome as the start of some new found grit. Or at least I hope so. We can't lose on our home floor, not this game.

This team has to get more scoring from the bench. Having AC back will help give us a better bench and hopefully the freshmen will lengthen our bench as the season goes along
not to mention the 5th starter! When was the last time 4 players only scored? Need Belo back, and either one of the freshman or Hawk to step up.

GO ILLINI!

I thought the Illini played very well and it was a heck of a game. I thought AZ was good and they were. Yes, Illini could have played better, but they hung tough. I will say though that I’m tired of hearing the belly aching about officiating. Also over the “if we had Curbelo, we would have won” comments. Good teams find a way to overcome. And while I hope he’s back soon, no one knows if or when he’ll be back.

Arizona scored 83 points. 65 of those points by 3 players. 78% of their scoring. 7 players scored. I don’t think only 4 of our players scoring all the points is a big deal. Didn’t lose the game for us. Just something for people to complain about. Those people won’t say a word when we have 8 or 9 people in the scoring column. Turnovers Illinois 16 vs 14 for Arizona. Didn’t necessarily lose the game either. We just lost a close hard fought game by 2 good teams. Simple as that. No need to whine & cry. On to the next game.

This was a game of inches that could have gone either way. It's easy to point fingers and say this guy could have done this and that guy could have done that. But Damonte Williams has gotten silly Technical fouls before, and that possession in the 1st half cost us quite a few points. As a 5th year senior, you have to keep your cool. In a game like this, every possession counts. We will be battling all season long for the Big 10 lead, and i'm excited to see how it all plays out. The season is still young, but this one stings a bit. All I want for Xmas now is a win against Mizzery.

He seemed to be rushing a little tonight.
Hard to argue with that. Bothered a little too much by the strength and size of Zona’s
BIG(s) I thought he showed some growth and stuck with it after a rough start.
Last year he probably doesn’t stay the course after early frustrations.
