I can see them bringing him back for the tournament. Get well Ayo.
Izzo has used football gear in practice for years. Saw one of his coaching tapes years ago where he talked about it and even saw Bruce talk about how he admired the technique and how tough it made Michigan State players. Izzos old teams played tough but I don't recall them playing dirty.I think our AD should speak out about the football helmets and shoulder pads, if true. He should make it an issue, point to Ayo's broken nose, and ask the conference to put an end to the practice.
Izzo put him in because all of his other bigs were in foul trouble.Certainly seems like Izzo put him in to be an ‘enforcer’ knowing that him fouling out wouldn’t impact anything.
No it is not that is why it was a flagrant 2 and the player was ejected. Flailing your arms at another opponent because your coach before the game told you to muck it up cant be allowed in todays collage game when there is so much on the line for some of these kids. The league shouldnt condone "street fights" the should condone basketball games played with integrity.Hard fouls are a part of the game to most of us that grew up in the 1980s and 1990s. Watch any of the Detroit Pistons, Miami Heat, Knicks. The difference between that style of play, and what Griffin did is quite different. Griffin's nonsense wasnt a basketball play. Stepping on a guy doesn't do anything. Its just a chippy disrespectful move.
Clobbering a guy at the rim, to prevent a layup, is in fact a basketball play. You may not want the game to be played that way anymore, but it's generally intent or lack of judgment for why people apologize. I doubt Izzo apologizes bc thats how he coaches it. No layups at the rim. Foul.
Underwood certainly isn't coaching his guys to step on other players, which is why he apologized. It's apples and oranges.
Did you even read what I wrote? My last sentence specifically said that I don't remember his teams playing dirty previously. Tough yes, dirty, no. Furthermore, nothing in what I wrote excused the behavior at all. I simply said using football gear to instill toughness was not a new technique, which is an objective truth as evidenced by the decade-old video I referenced and our previous coach's affinity for the technique. So, it's OK because he's done it before?
Playing dirty is the key, and Ayo's broken nose the result.
Izzo has that status.I cant believe there's not more outrage about this nationally.
Big 10 and national player of year frontrunner taken out on a cheap-shot play when he didnt even have the ball in his hands.
If the same thing happened to a Duke or NBA player there would be nonstop coverage on the four-letter network.
Eye-zo's tactics have been given the seal of approval from the media, Big 10 and NCAA
Probably because, as fans, we are in Ayo's corner and defend him like he's a son or brother. The reality is, Michigan State's game plan is to play physical, at hard and muck up games to keep them in the 60's. They don't have the talent level that they've historically had to win otherwise. They played the same way vs Ohio State. It was a hard foul, it was extremely physical and when you play that style, those things happen. That kid didn't have the intention of taking him out. Between the Pistons and Knicks, the Bulls dealt with this for close to a decade. That's how those teams won. They made life miserable for Jordan. Bloody noses and cut lips were just part of it. The intent was to make them earn everything they got. If Kofi makes free throws...most of their "bigs" don't even see the floor. When he goes 3 for 11.... find as many guys(fouls) off the bench and hack away.I cant believe there's not more outrage about this nationally.

Yes, I agree, which is why I said it in the first place.Did you even read what I wrote? You mentioned State never "playing dirty" before, and that is the key difference.
I’d rather he just spike the ball of his faceAgreed. So next year I hope Kofi comes back and let’s Emoni Bates skinny !!! get airborn and just flips him. No layups. Then I hope Brad says, “I hope Emoji is ok.” Tom will think it’s the right way to play.
When the refs didn’t address it when he clobbered Kofi they approved the play. Should have called a flagrant then.I saw the game and it was not basketball out there. The refs lost control of it and we got beat up like it was some type of fight, not basketball as I remember the game being played. The conference needs to investigate this incident and seriously consider what punishment is appropriate for Mady Sissoko as well as the MSU coaching staff, since they are also responsible for how this game was played.
You can’t just throw out allegations like that. You have to prove the double standard. So... sorry Brad Davison’s nose, we need you to prove a point for us.Can somebody please go on national television and advocate for justice on Ayo’s behalf??
My God the silence from the B1G on this is deafening.
The precedent was set last year that suspensions would be dished out for flagrant 2s since they are considered unsportsmanlike acts that could hurt other players.
Apparently Illinois players mean less to the B1G. I’m beyond frustrated about this.

Holtmann sure wanted to the other night.Nobody wants to speak out against Izzo?
I think this is true. And the BIG wants MSU in March Madness. I can’t prove it, but I think the standard would be different if, for example, a Rutgers player broke a player‘s nose on an F2. Just my feeling, of course.Nobody wants to speak out against Izzo?
That right there is the key IMO. A hit to the head, by this same player, was called a basketball play. THIS is where the reds are accountable. Call the flagrant there as a step to get the game under control. Don’t call it and you promote and encourage this type of play and it leads to players getting hurt. Sure Izzie has some blame, but it’s the job of the officials to encourage safe, legal play. When the refs didn’t address it when he clobbered Kofi they approved the play. Should have called a flagrant then.
Come on manSo do we think Izzo will use the Ayo incident as negative recruiting against Illini. “Mrs. Recruit, if something like that happened to your son while at MSU, I can guarantee that the offending player would be suspended. Do you want to send your child to Illinois where he won’t be protected?”
