Complete silence on the Charles Matthews front is interesting. It seems pretty rare that nothing comes out about possible destinations when a player transfers. To me, it seems like good news given how involved we were in his recruitment out of high school. The question to me is whether the staff burned any bridges with him after he picked UK. You would hope not, but there seems to be some history of bridge burning with Groce (i.e. Brunson and LeVert)

Curious what you are talking about wrt Brunson? Not disagreeing, I honestly don't know.

As for LeVert, I wouldn't consider that bridge burning. Had Groce taken his new job at Illinois and then started stealing recruits from Ohio that would have been in pretty poor taste IMO.

Brunson: claimed Illinois completely stopped talking to them after the Snider commitment. Groce had to personally take over recruitment to get back in the door.

LeVert: claimed he talked to one of the assistants briefly and was promised a call from Groce, but no one ever reached out to him after that. Felt abandoned by a coach that recruited him heavily to Ohio. Even though we didn't really have a scholarship for him and technically it was against the rules to contact him, a lot of people agree that some form of contact to let the kid know that much was expected.

+1 TC :thumb:. I've been thinking of typing a similar note the last two weeks. I'm sure a lot of people here really appreciate all the updates and posts that those two make... including myself. Thanks for saying it out loud.

Two schools that are in the mix for Kentucky transfer Charles Matthews: Xavier and Michigan, per sources.

We've already heard this, but just adds to the fact nobody I've seen has said or heard we are in the mix.

We just dont have the straight forward path to loads of immediate pt that he is looking for. He would have to beat out guys here and he isnt looking to do that.

If only I had a dime for every lost recruit that this board claimed that it was because of pt and being scared of other players... :D

Truth is that Illinois is great opportunity for pt on multiple positions. Nunn is gone, and so will be the major mpg player, Malcolm Hill. Abrams, Tate, Mav, and Thorne will also be gone. Other than JCL, there are not many wing players who have already proven of major minutes in the rotation. So if Matthews is simply scared of pt (totally unsubstantiated IMO), I wonder why Pickett, Goodwin, Lewis, and all other wings that many think would be good fits, are not.

Bottom line, Matthews can right now choose another school for many other reasons than just being scared of pt and other players, especially given the state of our program.

And if he wasn't scared of the competition at Kentucky, why would he be scared here

You're forgetting all about the silent verbals from Goodwin and Lewis. Take that into account and there's not much room on the wing. Add Scruggs to the mix and it's easy to see why Matthews might have PT concerns.

Lol. Well played. Maybe he'd be willing to pay his own way though and walk on. ;)

He did. Calipari expressed his unhappiness with him leaving. He wanted him to stay.

That was a PR move. It is never a good look to admit that you ran a kid off the team after a season. Cal made it pretty clear to CM that he should explore other opportunities.

Both player and coach need to do what is best for them.

I would hate to see another player (Moore) spurn the Illini twice.
