As long as Whitman has his guy in his back pocket the timing...otherwise the timing is pretty terrible.

I do feel sorry for the next HC and trying to find assistants on such short notice.

Oh to be a fly on the first day of spring practice.

What would you have Whitman do? He was hired late. He did the right thing despite horrible timing he couldn't help.

And we need to get it out of our heads that anything that happened before today mattered.

The new regime starts now. Past DIA moves are essentially null and void as illustrated by today's move.

I would hope it is an NFL guy or at the least a College Coordinator. A Head College Coach who would abandon a program in March is a sleazebag that is even lower than Lane Kiffin.

Just when you thought the Rutgers vs Minnesota thriller was going to be your entertainment for the afternoon.

Interested to see how this all plays out.

So happy right now that I will actually be able to attend/watch Illini football games next season! No way I was doing that with the Cubits in charge. I think Whitman got that message loud and clear.

Did Cubit leak this perhaps?

I mean, obviously he's the guy that needs to be told first, then Ryan Cubit, and then as immediately as possible thereafter the team.

That is what I'm thinking. Cubit was told and was none-to-thrilled, so he leaked the information to try to make JW look bad for not telling the players before it leaked.

a minority hire like Smith or Frazier could be announced today with zero wait time. They can claim extenuating circumstances and no one on the BoT will complain, and if Whitman has donors to pony up the buyout, all is cool that way.

I'm just going to say it. There's a sitting mid-major head coach (who is in the midst of a moderately successful rebuild) about whom Whitman has spoken enormous praise in virtually all of his public comments regarding what he wants the relationship of the coach to his players to be like....

Sometimes kids 18 and over need to put the phone down and realize every little reaction in life doesn't require documenting it on Twitter.

I mean, that has to be the worst possible outcome, right?

How do you know there will be a coaching search? With a move like this it's hard to see Whitman not having someone already in the bag.

As a State funded University, are they not required to do a search, including some diversity candidates? I think someone mentioned they must wait at least a week, probably after officially "posting" the job opening.

I have boycotted purchasing/attending anything Illini related since this dumpster fire was lit (childish, I know, but it is the only way I can truely show my anger). This move is a step in the right direction.

I think you are right. I doubt someone gets hired today, or at least announced.

There are no formal diversity requirements for interviews. There is a formal one-week waiting period, but that can be waived due to extenuating circumstances.

Spring ball being scheduled to start in 6 days would seem pretty defensible as an extenuating circumstance.
