I think this might be OK. You see how many open FBS coaching jobs there are this off season? Do you think Illinois would have high pecking order in that?

We'd end up with our 4th, 5th or even 6th choice, and land another Tim Beckman.

I swear if someone made an s n l skit out of this saga it would be deemed to unbelievable to be on the show.

well. U of I just lost a doner in me.

Cubit is a good guy. If they couldn't get a big name a 2 year deal might have been the most rational route. And Ryan Cubit and staff have done a ok job recruiting in spite of this scandal. While not terribly excited, I am ok with this move

The best analogy I've seen so far: Illinois football is Sisyphus.

A 2 year deal for Cubit is idiotic. Are we officially the worst B1G football program?

There are always a lot of openings. Every season.

You gotta admit that USC, Miami, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Missouri, Maryland, Syracuse all would gather interest before us. There have not been so many big names on the table before.

@dan_bernstein: Source: active, vocal faction of #Illini boosters "really pissed" about Cubit deal, threatening to pull support.

Chip Kelly is going to USC, IMHO. How does that impact any coach search for Illinois? It doesn't. Mizzou has real issues. Unless they can pry Hermann away from Houston, they may not get the type of hire they would like. VT just hired Fuente. Surely, you don't think Memphis is on the same level as a B1G job opening. No one is going to worry about a Syracuse opening over Illinois. Syracuse is not a big name in football. That was decades ago. I can keep going on, but will spare the extra 1's and 0's. So many big names ever? I don't see it.

This line of thinking would make more sense to me if we signed Cubit to a standard 4-year deal with a low buyout. Then we'd basically be saying that we didn't expect to do better on the open market anyway. But does it make sense to dump a season or two down the drain and wait on a permanent AD because we're worried about going head-to-head with Maryland and Syracuse for the same HC candidates? A two-year deal is just plan weird and that's why we are literally the only program in the entire FBS to have a "permanent" HC on a deal less than 4 years.

So Tim Beckman hired our next head coach.....wow. We will have to wait and see if he finally did something right.

If the coaching rumors play out as expected then Illinois would have been competing with Maryland, Iowa State, Missouri, and Syracuse for Miles, Babers, Brohm, Kiffin, and other lower level candidates. Even picking a name out of a hat and getting the worst of that group is an improvement over the 2 year Cubit extension.

That's a winner!!
OH
They knew they wanted the 'interim' plan and they had to extend before the game today... can you imagine what would happen if extending HCBC after a loss?

Can you imagine extending his contact and then getting beat down? Oh you do t have to imagine.
