I'm ok with the trade and the contract. Or I should say, I don't hate it like most do. Next year's first round pick is lottery protected so it would move to 2023 if they get one of the top two. Not to mention, they can still reshape the roster and get a first round pick back. With the supposed depth of next year's draft, they could be middle and still come up with a great player.

Jones is something they don't have anywhere in the org and he's still young (will turn 27 in October) so he SHOULD be in the prime of his career. Shaw and Seabrook LTIR will eat a lot of that salary and Toews and Kane's contract is up in two years(?) so it's not like they don't have the space.

Someone changed the direction of the org from rebuild to something else with this move. Not sure what the something else is, but it's not a full on rebuild anymore.

Colliton seems to be a VG communicator and younger players/prospects seem to really like him. Just not convinced an old warhorse is the answer here. We've been in development mode since Colliton got the job. With Jones, the timetable changed. The Hawks will have to make the playoffs, otherwise Colliton will get axed.

I guess my point is that I see Colliton as a replacement level coach. I would have been happy bringing in Gallant, but I'd also be optimistic that <insert coach here> would be an improvement.

I do think the problems the past 4 years have been primarily due to the roster, regardless of whether Q or JC was coaching. That said, I think it's a bit of revisionist history to say the Hawks have been in development mode since JC was hired. Last year is the only year they were explicitly rebuilding.

If I were Stan I would have cut bait after 2019-20, but he didn't, so hopefully I'm very wrong and it all looks a lot better with a proper #1 D and whatever other pieces we add.

This move has me worried about the future of Toews. Could they be looking to acquire their new C in Jones?

With the decline of Keith, we've needed a #1 D baaaaad for a few seasons now. That's what the trade was all about, nothing to do with Toews. No one knows how well Toews is going to play.

Seeing some early reports that supposedly the Blue Jackets wanted Dach or DeBrincat as part of the deal for Seth Jones and the Blackhawks said no.
Some of the early reports said the CBJ wanted Dach AND DeBrincat, AND Boqvist or Mitchell, AND a 1st round pick. That's hard to believe, but I had read that initially.
