I'm ok with the trade and the contract. Or I should say, I don't hate it like most do. Next year's first round pick is lottery protected so it would move to 2023 if they get one of the top two. Not to mention, they can still reshape the roster and get a first round pick back. With the supposed depth of next year's draft, they could be middle and still come up with a great player.
Jones is something they don't have anywhere in the org and he's still young (will turn 27 in October) so he SHOULD be in the prime of his career. Shaw and Seabrook LTIR will eat a lot of that salary and Toews and Kane's contract is up in two years(?) so it's not like they don't have the space.
Someone changed the direction of the org from rebuild to something else with this move. Not sure what the something else is, but it's not a full on rebuild anymore.
