Box Office Films

I'm getting so sick of NIL and speculation on other threads and billion$ handed out to college athletes. Creepy.

But speaking of money, why do I have to pay exorbitant fees for cable tv? Nonsequitur, I know.

Sitting here in recliner watching "Death Valley Days" with the Old Ranger (Stanley Andrews). Free in the mid-50s when I was a kid. (Not true: parents had to buy a 12-inch B&W television and an antenna! And the brave tv repairman who risked electrocution replacing those tubes. A profile in courage JFK did not mention in his book).

Now I pay through the nose to Xfinity to watch tv shows we saw virtually free way back when I was a kid. I just don't understand.

Just so my post is relevant to this thread, I also watched "Bad Day at Black Rock" earlier. Big box office hit. Spencer Tracy, Robert Ryan, Lee Marvin, Dean Jagger ...

And now Rory Calhoun in "The Texan"!
You COULD just spend $15-20 and get an HDMI digital antenna and still watch a whole bunch of shows for free. More than you would have been able to as a kid, that's for sure. Just not likely that many old reruns. Also most smart TVs (which almost all are nowadays) have built in Roku or other service with plenty of free streaming channels you can get access to, including ones that would have a lot of those old shows. They would just have ads most likely, but that's no different than when you were a kid also and all TV stations had commercials. Picture quality would be a whole lot better now, too.

Do I have to wait until my 13-year-old Sony un-smart flatscreen conks out? (Waiting: got a line on a new smart one). My tv has HDMI thing. But I live in an apartment. Are you talking antenna outside? Don't think so.

I kid you not: I am soon to be 73 years old and have had only three Sonys in my life since 1974. Sony - No Baloney!

Thanks for your advice and help.

GO ILLINI! (And Sony).

Can Sony send a few bucks my way for my endorsement? Or a discount on next purchase, at least?

Yes, the DTV flat antennas are about the size of a sheet of paper, but thicker like cardboard. They are fairly inexpensive. I have one I use to watch local channels and it works quite well and there are lots of digital channels you can pick up with it. Here is what I see that you should be able to pick up near Metaluma....

Check these out. Walmart probably has them...

Good luck!

An alternative option which I have done, and LOTS of people do, is to cancel your cable package and just get a decent internet service, Then purchase a couple of Streaming Services, some others can probably recommend ones available to you there.

Thanks a million! I just finished building my Interociter! (Took me years. Replacement parts were hard to get. I also had trouble with an Erector Set 65 years ago and Lincoln Logs).

Seriously, got to cut down Xfinity cable cost. Rip-off city.

But will streaming stuff be HD? I'm anal.

Again, thanks so much everybody.

Now watching "The Sea Hawk" with Errol Flynn for the 2,139th time. Box office big hit!

Yes the streaming stuff is definitely HD. Personally I cut the cord back in 2011. I subscribe to three streaming services and get rest via digital HD antenna. Everything I need and spend about $40/mo total.

As a recent arrival to your planet, I don't understand your earthling ways. What streaming ways, cut the cord? I call Xfinity and say screw it? What do I do then? But I must have Turner Classic Movies. Please advise. Hurry! Xfinity bill incoming soon.

Thanks to all of you for your help.

Total???? That's crazy....lol. My middle of the road internet service is $50/month.... Enlighten me/us..... You must be, like me, sharing accounts with a family/friend or two.... Otherwise I'd have to shell out more $$$ to get the Illini FB/BB games.

Another great source of free streaming is through your local library. I have Kanopy through mine and they carry a TON of movies and TV shows, though it's throttled via Credits per viewing. Might be different in you area. I'm guessing you can get a library card in Bloomington???? They have some nice streaming services available looking at their website.

I wasn't including cost of internet, which for me is $89/mo for fiber, because I use the Internet for work and other things as well so would have it anyway.

Between Netflix, Prime, and Disney+ it does come out to about $40/mo, though. We also get Peacock through my MIL's account.

In my opinion Passion was a much better film..... beat me up now..... lol. And I'm not even much in the way of a religious person. how Crazy how much these are polar opposites, lol. Speaks to the current state of our society I guess. I was more turned off by the incessant F-bombs, sexual innuendoes, and just plain vulgar script writing.... I know I know, I've heard it 100 time already, "this is just how Deadpool is!" I classify the vulgarity in the same way I classify gratuitous sex in films, If it adds something to the film, okay, I get it..... but there is such a thing as too much..... Apparently there is a subset of people who think it's the 'coolest thing ever!' I'm just not one of them.

And AZILL also wants all of us to get off his lawn. :p
Some of us think it is cool to swear, denigrate, sexualize, verbally abuse, our friends, family, strangers, etc..... all for a laugh/reaction, some of us do not. And that is just my opinion, obviously not yours. To each their own. I've watched all 3 Deadpool movies, and I will watch the 4th when/if it comes out. But this does absolutely nothing for the MCU as it stands today. And in the end, that is all I care about. Today, the MCU is in shambles...... and Deadpool does nothing to further or improve it.

To paraphrase the intro to one of my favorite TV shows of all time..."It's just a movie, I really should relax".

I don't think I felt relaxed for even 1 minute of DP3..... :ROFLMAO:

I agree with you. Now everybody can get off my lawn too! :D

I can’t wait for this!
I was a high school freshman in 1975. I saw the first episode and pretty much every one the first couple years . There was nothing else like it then. the only other sketch comedy was on Carson show or Carol Burnett Show, and those were for “old people “.

It’s too bad it’s lost its way the last 5-10 years . not sure how much longer it can keep going .

from that trailer , it might be a good movie . seems like 9 out of 10 movies now involve action hero’s or cgi .

Nicolas Cage to play John Madden in an Amazon MGM Studios produced biopic. The film will be directed by David O. Russell, who directed Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle.
I finally got around to seeing Cage in Longlegs earlier today.... Crazy movie! He may not be most peoples first choice, but I think he can pull it off!!!

I saw Alien Romulus today. Gotta admit, I was disappointed. Well made, nicely shot, but brings nothing new to the franchise. The 2 most memorable characters, Andy and Rook, were androids, lol. Rain (Cailee Spaeny), didn't have 1/10th the screen presence of Sigourney Weaver, weak choice for a lead in this caliber film. I did like her character in Civil War. The Bjorn? dude talked with such an odd accent I couldn't understand most of what he even said. I hope the next movie in this 'franchise' features the Engineers. I'd love to see where Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) ended up and what she found.
