Very helpful - just know they don’t pick by pure mileage. The seeded teams send a preference list that then is utilized. So if location 2 is 100 miles away further but has a lot more alumni and better flights, they may pick a further location.
Do you have a linked source to that somewhere? I know that the TOP overall seed can submit a preference list (per old SI article) but I was not aware that the committee considers anyone's preferences except for the top seed.

This guy claims it IS just looking at mileage and links to a chart that is much better than my dinky little spreadsheet.

Nice find, thanks for sharing the link. And appreciate your work on the chart too! I used to put together those BTT seeding charts until I realized someone else (Torvik) has something similar (except better and more frequently updated) out there :D

Maybe you are right and I extrapolated their thoughts on the top seed.

There’s a Clause to your point at miles way down there so maybe you are right.

Not true-if Nebraska loses tonight, we clinch a double bye
Well if Nebraska loses tonight and still wins their last 2, MSU wins out, and Illinois loses out, then we will be a 5 seed.

Looking at that chart, here are a few possibilities that I could see. Keep in mind BYU can't play Sundays, so only Charlotte, Omaha, Pittsburgh, and Salt Lake City are on the table for them.

TeamClosest SiteSequentialFewestBalanced
PurdueIndyIndyIndyIndy

UConnBrooklynBrooklynBrooklynBrooklyn

"Closest Site" is just that - the closest (non-hosting) site for each team. Indy is the clear logjam - you've got 3 "extra" teams there, plus 1 more each in Memphis and Charlotte. And then you've got 2 empty slots each in Spokane and Pittsburgh, and one more in Brooklyn.

"Sequential" is what happens if you bump the first "extra" team to the closest available site, then the next team, and so on.

"Fewest" is like sequential, but only bumping teams who started out as "extra" - so Baylor and BYU get to stay put.

"Balanced" involved moving seeds 2-4 away from their closest available venue to help keep other teams a bit closer to home. 1 seeds weren't changed. This one feels like the kind of thing the committee would do - keeping Duke and UNC both in Charlotte, for example, means crowds and ratings (and protects some blue-bloods ), mainly at the expense of TN going to Indy and Creighton to Spokane.

Also I frickin' love the BTT simulator. Whatever guy or gal came up with that is so much smarter than I am, and I owe that person my gratitude!! I'm a staunch defender of the BTT as a glorious money grab that brings the entire conference into one location to create a uniquely fun atmosphere for the fans, and I for one treat it as a big deal. So, I love seeing our potential seed.

Let's assume we can nab the #2 seed ... that means a Quarterfinals matchup on Friday at 5:30 pm. Selfishly, I frickin' love that timeline for watching the games and hopefully getting a really nice Illini contingent in Minneapolis!! We would play the winner of the #7/#10 matchup on Thursday. Right now, these are the teams ranked in that general ballpark:

6. Michigan State: 9-8
7. Iowa: 9-9
8. Minnesota: 8-9
10. Penn State: 8-10
11. Indiana: 7-10
12. Maryland: 7-11

First thing is first, if we are a team that can make a run to the Sweet Sixteen, we should not be afraid of ANYONE in this league before potentially facing Purdue on Sunday. However, of those potential opponents for our Friday game, these are my feelings (all in order of how much I would welcome playing them).

Bring 'Em On: Penn State, Indiana and Michigan State. PSU is just simply not that good, and I think on a neutral floor after what happened in State College, we would be fired up and beat them. I also think Indiana is partially broken, and they are historically awful in the BTT (notwithstanding beating us in 2022...). I respect MSU as a team, but I actually feel we match up with them decently well?

A Bit Hesitant: Iowa. I actually think Iowa is going to be a threat to everyone as we close out the year, but something about the rivalry and the stage of the BTT has me way less worried we'd ever come out flat vs. the Hawkeyes. Plus, the matchup in general would just be fun from a fanfare perspective.

Please Avoid if Possible: Minnesota and Maryland. Sure, they won't shoot quite as lights out as this last time (... right?!?!), but they should have a nice home court edge. I am very glad we did not have to go to the Barn this year. As for Maryland ... we got the monkey off our back with the win in College Park. Let's not tempt fate and have an uber-Illini result of getting hot to end the year only for Maryland to knock us out in our first BTT game to kill the momentum going into the NCAA Tournament, haha.

Serious note: I think there has been just one B1G game that Illinois just didn't look like it had an answer all night, and that was at Purdue without TJ. They had the games @NW, @MSU, and @PSU won, and the Maryland game was a level of effort they can't expect to bring to any game and still should have won it. Anybody else, they've outplayed them at their place, or they outplayed them at home during the biggest of offensive outliers in their program's history.

I think Illinois is pretty clearly the second best team in the conference.
