The Big Ten is free to change the time of its title game. Like I said before, the lack of seeding benefit for one game is definitely a price the conference is willing to pay in order to get huge ratings as the CBS lead-in to the bracket reveal show.

It's funny, we argue about this every year, even though "the BTT final comes too late for seeding consideration" has been a well known and documented fact since time immemorial.
This part cannot be stated enough. For reference, these are the three best Illini TV ratings this year:

1.46 million at Tennessee (CBS)
1.34 million at Michigan State (CBS)
1.00 million at Maryland (FOX)

Comparatively, our final two games on CBS when we won the Big Ten Tournament in 2021 were the TWO most watched games of that season:

2.89 million vs. Iowa in the semifinals (CBS)
3.68 million vs. Ohio State in the semifinals

The OSU game peaked at nearly 6 million viewers at one point due to being literally right before the Selection Show. The 2:30 pm Sunday championship game is really dumb for the logistics of the bracket ... but it's a money maker.

I get that. And sorry for continuing to repeat myself, but my position is that if the NCAA wanted to, they could find a way to account for Sunday's results.

BUT, I'm actually a big fan of the BTT championship leading right into the selection show. It's an exquisite few hours of television. Five times we've gotten to watch Illinois play in the championship (cutting down the nets in three) and then immediately see where they are placed in the bracket. I really can't think of anything else in my sports fandom that compares to that combination.

So, if my only two choices were: A) Move the time of the game to get the bracket right or B) Keep it where it is and ignore the results. I think I'm taking B.

At the end of the day (and it pains me to say this), the committee does a pretty good job with the brackets, all things considered.

And as silly as some aspects of the NET rankings and Quads are, that has made the process even more legible and reliable, while also incentivizing teams to schedule more entertaining non-conference schedules.

The NCAA occasionally does things right.

36 points down now, lol. Might drop to 100 at this rate.
I'm sure someone has brought this up before, but I HAVE to assume the Committee is pretty lenient with teams around the cutoff? Would they really view us as potential #3 seed material because we have "no bad losses" if Maryland is at #74, but we eliminate ourselves from the conversation if Maryland quits a day early vs. Wisconsin and slides to #76 or something?

And it's even more absurd than that, because in the room it's an ongoing conversation about teams and seeding and votes, etc. But then they wake up the next day, Illinois hasn't played, and all of a sudden we're 5-6 in Quad 1 rather than 6-6.

It's 80% science, 20% vibes, and we just have to live with it. It's fine.

We also have to remember that most teams are pretty locked into a seed at this point, or will be by Saturday evening.

We're in a situation where we're teetering between seeds that can potentially make a large difference.

If we were between the last 4 and the first 5, it wouldn't even really matter.

It's not a huge deal either way

This is why the quadrant system is ridiculous.

It's a tool. It has its uses - at a quick glance, it tells you some things. But it also has its limitations, and it seems like the committee has time to go deeper and work around those.
Yeah, I actually like the system IF it's used as a sort of guiding principle. I would think a team with 4 Quad 1 wins but they are all against teams in the top 30 would be rewarded more handsomely than a team with 6 Quad 1 wins but they're all pushing being Quad 2? Either way, yes, we can only hope the Committee is treating this like a legitimate full-time job and making sure they look at each team in detail. And I think they do/are.

Exactly. Arizona also has a Quad 3 loss and it is not impacting much. They are still NET 4 and looking to be a 2 seed. Take care of business, and the Illini will have a great chance at being a 3 seed, regardless of where Maryland ultimately ends up in NET.

Yeah, to be clear we control our own destiny. However, it is nice to have the little things break your way if we are really even with another team in the eyes of the Committee. If Team A and Illinois are both seen as relatively equal for the last #3 seed spot and Team A does NOT have a Quad 3 loss, it might be an easy excuse to let the Quad system make the tough decision for the Committee. Get to Sunday, and let's hope we are not sweating it!

Maryland loss drops them from 54 to 66 in kenpom. NET seems to be even more punishing for blowouts. Safe to assume Maryland will finish in the 80s for NET after that disgrace of a performance. Would've been better off for everyone if they decided to ditch Minny today for spring break in Florida

Going to be a real shame if we happen to win the BTT, but get a 4 seed anyway because for whatever god forsaken reason the B1G and SEC think their championship game should end minutes before the selection show.
