Texas Opening - Impact

A couple of coaches that have "loose" Lovie Smith ties on the out going Texas staff:

Vance Bedford - DC/DB Coach, worked as Lovie's DB coach on his inaugural staff in Chicago in 2004. This is the only tie to the two coaches and it was only for a year; however, considering Paul Williams was a holdover from Cubit's staff and most likely Lovie will want his guys in here, this is a possibility. Bedford has coached at Michigan, Oklahoma State, Louisville, Florida, and the Bears. He also is from Texas, which is a state that Lovie wants to prioritize recruiting wise.

Brick Haley - DL Coach, worked with Lovie for two years as DL coach in Chicago. Also has worked at Mississippi State, LSU, Baylor, and Clemson. I would put money on Mike Phair returning next year as DL coach; however, Haley would definitely be an option if Phair decides to head back to NFL.

Interesting that Lovie seems to allude to having no current plans to shake up his staff (and that he'd help guys move if they find a better opportunity, but doesn't foresee anyone leaving). A bit surprising, though maybe just coach speak.

What else would you say I suppose until you actually make a change:

You'd think we would have heard something already.

If he keeps all the assistants that would be a very disturbing sign.

Maybe he's getting started contacting the guys who are free and giving the soon to be displaced time or help on finding soft landing spots?

I am definitely in favor of a few coaching changes on the staff, but it's definitely possible that Lovie wants to give all the guys a true full offseason to make recruiting impact, etc.

This season was mostly a wash due to having only 7 or 8 months to start recruiting and implementing schemes and maybe Lovie wants to give the benefit of the doubt to his assistants just like how we should treat this season as a whole.

Or maybe he just wants to let them down easy and give them a chance to find another job before the "official" word comes out.

If I remember correctly, Lovie never moved quickly in regards to coaching changes in Chicago. I almost think you may see Lovie do some "unorthodox" things with his lack of knowledge on how it typically plays out in college football. I have a feeling you may see no staff moves until after signing day as when staff moves are made, you lose a valuable body and voice in the recruiting game when you make a move early, so waiting until after signing day (or at least until dead periods) makes a lot of sense from this standpoint; however, it can backfire if someone leaves on their own accord and you don't move to replace them.

It really is.

They should be after Dana Holgorsen, who would absolutely leave WVU for the Oregon job.

Gun to my head I would guess they end up with Bryan Harsin though.

Read somewhere that Holgorsen's kid is a sophomore or junior in HS in morgantown and because his family life is "settled" right now, he may not want to leave WVU right now. I agree he would be a good fit for UO though.

Miles reportedly no longer a possibility to coach Purdue is a bit of a relief

I would rather recruit against Miles than I would Fleck in Illinois. Miles would most likely head to SEC country + Texas to recruit players. Fleck is going to come to Illinois and be extremely relentless on the recruiting trail. Fleck would be worse case scenario hire at Purdue for our sake, IMO.
