Fleck hangs out at WMU winning 10 games a year the next 4 years, at which time he will only be 40.
Lovie reaches the end of his contract right about then, Fleck moves in to take over.
You saw it here first!

That would also be my ideal scenario, though I doubt if PJ continues to put up 10 wins a year, that he won't be enticed by another P5 job before then.

I was actually hoping he'd take something like a Cincinnati now, so he'd be off the market theoretically these next couple of years and then available in like 3-5 years, if Lovie decides to retire then.

What about if lovie has so much success he rides off into the sunset and McGee takes over.

That's what I thought I heard the internal, unspoken plan was anyway? I would promote McGee before I'd take any of these other coaches on the carousel.

I realize that USC did not go well; however, working for Nick Saban was exactly what Lane Kiffin needed to take the next step.

Houston has not hired anyone BTW.

He sucked at Tennessee, also. He recruited my godson while at Tennessee and his methods were the most bizarre of any of the schools that recruited him. He is cray-cray. lol

Kiffin is that 5 star QB recruit with all the tools that just can't get his head screwed on straight. It's going to be very interesting to see if he's actually grown up.

I love the hire though -- college football is more interesting when Kiffin can talk to the media.

That's a winner!!

That would be concerning. McGee does not have a good history as a head coach. I will admit to not knowing the particulars of his time at UAB besides the program shutting down shortly after he left.

I don't think the UAB thing can be held against McGee. After he took the job, the school gave him about no support/resources (they didn't have any to give) and he saw the writing on the wall that the program was going to go under so he took the OC job at Louisville. I think Garrick McGee would be a really good hire if Lovie would decide to retire/move on.

Garrick McGee will be the next Illinois head coach after Lovie.

McGee will be our next head coach unless...

1. He leaves for another job before Lovie leaves.

2. The "Lovie Smith Era" is a complete disaster.

If our football team shows any signs of success in Lovie's tenure I don't understand why people on this thread would be against an internal hire.

I think the bar is slightly higher than "ANY signs of success"

But seriously, I think we should cross that bridge when we come to it. It's a whole different world on the other side of winning, our image of this program will be radically different if we're in a position to consider an internal successor to a retiring winner in Lovie.

The general discussion of internal hires is an interesting one. Some fear the chaos and change of the coaching market, while some look at it more as an opportunity to seek out a coach with your best foot forward. It can go both ways.

Some internal hires are Chip Kelly, and some are Mark Helfrich (and some, like Larry Coker, can even be both).

I'm with you S&C - No one is against McGee as a successor, but a lot has to happen and a lot may change by the time we're talking about Lovie's successor. It absolutely could be the right plan, but we really won't know that for awhile. If Lovie is successful here, the longer he stays, the better.

UPDATES:

Jay Norvell (WR's Arizona State) hired at Nevada. Really good offensive mind that has been around for a long time and coached at a lot of top notch programs. Oklahoma, Nebraska, Texas, and UCLA are among stops. Very well connected and probably blew them away at the interview.

Houston: Reports surfaced that Lane Kiffin would be hired; however, I think that Kiffin has become the #1 target and the powers at be will meet tonight to decide if they want to move forward. A report has surfaced that Larry Fedora (UNC Head Coach) was offered and turned down the job.

Temple: I have seen that Charlie Strong has spoken to Temple, this at least shows me he has some interest to coach next season, I don't believe it will be at Temple. He is more likely to land at USF and if not there he is more likely to be the Oregon DC next year than he is at Temple. I still don't understand how Temple wouldn't go hard after Joe Moorhead....he is the best fit and is a proven winner...time will tell. Greg Schiano is one to really watch here as well, tremendous fit as well.

South Florida: Charlie Strong has to be the favorite but Geoff Collins (DC Florida), Larry Scott (TE's Tennessee), Rich Bisaccia (TE/Asst. HC Dallas Cowboys), Eddie Gran (OC, Kentucky), Lane Kiffin, Greg Schiano, Lawrence Dawsey (WR FSU), and Mario Cristobal have all been mentioned.

Western Kentucky: Paul Petrino has talked to WKU officials about job. He has done a really good job at Idaho. WKU appears to be starting with "in house" type candidates that are in the Petrino/Louisville/Western Kentucky circles. A couple others to watch here would be T.J. Weist (interim HC at USF) and Raymond Woodie (DC - USF). Garrick McGee may not be too far down on WKU's list either. I believe this is Petrino's job to lose. Neal Brown (Troy HC) has rumored to already interviewed as well.

Florida Atlantic: Jim Leavitt appears to be favorite at the moment. Mario Cristobal probably isn't too far behind and may be a more likely candidate. Luke Fickell, Manny Diaz, Geoff Collins, and Tim Brewster have also been mentioned.

Cincinnati: Luke Fickell is making major push, Kerry Coombs who is also an assistant on tOSU staff is also candidate. Neal Brown has been mentioned. Charlie Strong has been mentioned. I think Luke Fickell is overwhelming favorite at the moment.

You had a great post a week or two ago that no fan base has faced misery quite like we have over the past decade. The bar can't be much higher than "any signs of success." If we are not an embarrassment on the field two years from now, that's a notable step forward. I'm not too worried about who coaches after Lovie though. The fact that we have any sort of buzz due to our HC is something I am not taking for granted. I hope the Lovie era pans out, but for now I'm doing my best to enjoy the ride. It's been more enjoyable than anything since Zook's 2nd to last year.

Tim Beckman stumbled into 6-6.

The question is if we build something that we want to keep, something bigger than the cult of personality around the head coach. The Lovie Effect is all we've got, for now. It's gonna be about building on that foundation.

It appears South Florida is making a very smart decision by wasting no time negotiating with Charlie Strong. Best fit available for Strong while also being a great situation for USF considering he'll come cheap with Texas being on the hook for large buyout.

Florida Atlantic is pursuing Lane Kiffin.

South Florida is zeroing in on Charlie Strong.

Cincinnati likely will announce Luke Fickell soon.

Would be amazed if a deal actually materialized here. Just don't see Kiffin leaving for a bottom end CUSA school. With Houston, and likely USF, filled I think he will just stay at Bama and hop on the carousel next year. He is a top coordinator with previous coaching experience at elite schools. Should ultimately have better offers down the road, and it's not like he needs to worry about risking staying another year (Bama isn't going anywhere).

Would be a home-run hire for FAU though. Definitely can understand why they would pursue it. Worst that happens is that Kiffin says no.

With unsuccessful campaigns at P5 USC and Tennessee Kiffin would be better off staying at Bama at least for another year. However it would be interesting to see what happens with Kelly at ND next year if he doesn't produce.

Taggert offered Charlie Strong the OC job at Oregon. Savage move, though the USA head job is likely better, still funny.

This had nothing to do with trying to screw USF. Taggart and Strong have been friends for a long time and Taggart probably offered this to Strong well before USF called.
