Chicago Cubs 2016 Season

Would like nothing more then to end this series on Monday; end the Giants' odd 'even' streak (pun), end the 'Bumgardner is God', get the Cubs into the NLCS 2 straight seasons for the 1st time ever.

They won 2 games with Rizzo and Russell hitless, with Bryant getting just the 1 hit, with some snafus in game 2 (Baez getting thrown out at 2nd after watching his HR not be a home run, the catcher's interference, 2 Bryant errors). We can knock them out in game 3. We can do this.

agree in general. We have won the two games so far in fairly unusual ways. If you would have told me beforehand that between Rizzo, Bryant and Russell they would have 1 hit and Hendricks would not pitch after the 4th inning in game 2 and have 2 rbi, I would have said we lose both games.

Our offense will pick up, and our D will settle down. But in general, pitching is what wins playoff games, and so far ours has.

Great job by the bullpen yesterday. In California for work. Too bad it's not near SF otherwise, I'd try to get tickets to game three.

Blue Jays advance in a thriller over the Rangers!

Fan-made sign of the year in Toronto: "Would rather get punched in May than knocked out in October." Fitting, as Roughned Odor made the throwing error that allowed Donaldson (former Cub prospect) to score the winning run.

Game 3 is going to be so much fun tonight. I am more excited for Arrieta - Bumgarner than I was for game 1. If they can beat madbum at home in the playoffs it really sends a message to the other playoff teams.

Gloomy weather on the horizon, too. Game will more than likely be played, but it might be cloudy and damp.

I'm interested in seeing what the lineup looks like. Right field is tricky in that ballpark, so Heyward might still get the nod, but I'm tempted to see what Almora Jr. could do out there. I think Montero will be catching Arrieta tonight, too.

I'd like to see Ross catch Arrieta with a tough lefty on the mound. They must work well together with that no-hitter. Also, I was hoping they would put Lackey in this game with Arrieta tomorrow.

Why though? Arrieta is perfect guy to go against BumG. Either he goes pitch for pitch or he's off and Giants score a handful.

The career #'s vs. these 2 guys are downright hideous.

Vs Arrieta:
Span 4-20
Posey 1-15
Crawford 1-13
Pence 3-13
Pagan 5-11
Belt 0-10
Zero combined HR

Vs BumG:
Fowler 8-38
Montero 6-32
Rizzo 3-16
Heyward 3-15
Zobrist 6-12
Bryant 1-8
Russell 0-7
Baez 1-7
Soler 0-3
One combined HR

He also threw a no-hitter with Montero the year prior. Ross being a right-handed bat may give him the edge.

Disagree with putting Lackey ahead of Arrieta. Arrieta is an ace who has dominated in California. Roll with him against Bumgarner, and if that fails you have a rock-solid game 4 starter in Lackey.

I think you might be wasting a very good Arrieta performance to a dominating Bumgarner performance. Moore can beat Lackey but I don't think he can beat Arrieta. I hope I'm wrong.

If the Cubs were down 0-2, I'd agree with you.

So your rationale is to essentially chalk game 3 up as a loss? I can't get behind that, regardless of the where the series stands. Start your best to beat the best.

I tend to prefer the game theory that Arrieta has Bumgarner-beating upside and Moore-losing downside, so better to roll the dice with him tonight and send the lower-variance Lackey against Moore where you hope your offense can win the game for you.

And there's also the psychology to consider as well. Arrieta has been the Cubs 4th best starter since midseason, and that might be generous. But is it wise to let him know that?

It all comes down to does the Arrieta from 2015 and first half of 2016 show up or the Arrieta from the second half? I don't see the Cubs offense having much of a night tonight but hope I'm wrong. So far in the series things have not been going according to script but the Cubs are still winning.

Game 3 lineup is out! Certainly sacrificing corner outfield defense for offensive potential. I like it.

1. Fowler - CF
2. Bryant - 3B
3. Rizzo - 1B
4. Soler - LF
5. Zobrist - RF
6. Russell - SS
7. Baez - 2B
8. Montero - C
9. Arrieta - P

I rewound that and watched it about four times. Every time I did, I kept watching for a different outcome. It's just too good to be true!

I know it's a smaller sample size and he's only 26 but Rizzo has been...not good in the postseason. Would love to see him tee one up this next half inning.

Wow, crazy game. Now I've gotta decide if I want to drop 150 bucks to go see game 4.

Thank goodness for coffee this morning.
My biggest concern at the moment is the Cubs reliance on their pitchers for their offense.
