Chicago Cubs 2021 season

I hope the Indians simultaneously feel better about 2016 and...never ever forget that 2016 happened. Because it did! Handing over the legacy of longest streak without a championship is the ultimate, "Tag, you're it!"

I don't care of the cubs win another game this season. And I've got my fingers crossed that things get bad enough that we sign Pujols.

How much longer is Trevor Williams in the starting rotation? I think it speaks volumes when Ross takes him out after 2 innings (42 pitches) and brings in Mills. Mills didn't do great either but I think he takes Williams spot for now unless Jed vetoes the move because it makes him look bad.

Brailyn Marquez just came off the COVID list and is in Arizona doing extended Spring Training. Have to figure he’ll be in the Big Leagues the minute the Cubs think he’s ready.

Two things stuck out about tonight’s game…

- As long as Nico is swinging any kind of bat at all (and he’s swinging a good one right now), he needs to be on the infield. His glove is that good. When he’s out there, the Cubs might have the best defensive infield in the game.

- How does a guy with Nance’s physique and velocity go undrafted, go to the Indy leagues, and then not make his MLB debut until age 30? I had to go to his BR page.

He didn’t have impressive college numbers, but you see mediocre college players with physical potential drafted in the 20-something’th round all the time. He got signed out of the Frontier League and then had a nice first season in the Cubs’ system in 2016. Got all the way up to AAA, but got hurt. Missed all of 2017. Only pitched 20 innings in 2018, wasn’t great in 2019 as an old AA player, and then obviously didn’t pitch in the minors in 2020.

I’ll be curious to see how he does once teams get tape on him. But it’s obvious at first glance why he’s still being given a chance at age 30.

Just a reminder…

Jon Lester with the Cubs, 6 seasons, 77-44, 3.64 ERA (exact same winning percentage and ERA with the Cubs as he had with the Red Sox), 2 All Stars, Cy Young runner up, 2.44 post-season ERA in 70 post-season innings, 2016 NLCS co-MVP, World Series ring.
and the best free agent signing in the history of the franchise.

Top three. You can make arguments for Andre Dawson and Ryan Dempster, especially in Dempster's case if you factor in that in addition to playing for the team for 9 years, he was eventually traded for Kyle Hendricks. Lester, Dawson and Dempster are 1a, 1b and 1c. Ted Lilly is a solid #4 and then there's a huge drop off to whomever #5 is.

Dawson is a close #2, but I don't think Dempster is close to either of those two. Lester gets the big time bump for winning a ring and being one the best post season pitchers of all time.

Cubs have 75.1 innings pitched by draft picks and amateur free agent signings through the first 41 games of the season.

Not extraordinary, but consider…

They only had 50.1 in 60 games last year and 45 innings pitched in the entirety of the 2019 season. 26 for the entirety of 2018. 25.1 in 2017, 18.1 in 2016…. You get the picture.

And they’ve been good this year with a 2.99 ERA.

This weekend's probable pitchers for the first Cubs-Cardinals series of the season at Busch:

-Friday: Hendricks (3-4, 5.27) vs. Martinez (3-4, 4.35)
-Saturday: Alzolay (2-3. 4.62) vs. Mikolas (Season debut)
-Sunday: Davies (2-2, 5.58) vs. Wainwright (2-4, 4.63)

An all time Cubs legend. Pat and Ron were talking about it the other night.

In addition to everything you mentioned, his signing and leadership forever changed the perception of this franchise.
