Was just perusing KenPom and noticed that Michigan, in addition to being bad, also had a tough B1G schedule this year.

Of the top five best B1G teams, they drew Purdue, Illinois, Michigan State, and Nebraska twice. That's 9 total games against those teams (vs. an expected average of 8).

Of the four other worst B1G teams, they drew only Rutgers twice. That's only 5 total games against the easiest teams (vs. an expected average of 6).

However, they also lost all 5 of those "easiest" games, despite the fact that 3/5 were at home and a fourth was at a semi-neutral site

Lots of correlation here. Similar to Vanderbilt football always having one of the toughest conference schedules. When you're the worst team, you don't get the benefit of playing yourself.

That's definitely true, but even accounting for that, Michigan's schedule this year has been especially tough.

Against any group of 5 teams, you'd expect an average of 7.7 games. Against the top 5, Michigan has had 9 games.

Against any group of 4 teams, you'd expect an average of 6.2 games. Against the 4 other bottom-5 teams, Michigan has had 5 games.

So yes, they don't get to play themselves - but they were also unlucky this year in drawing an "extra" game against Purdue/Illinois/MSU/Nebraska instead of an "expected" 2nd game against IU/PSU/MN.

Teflon Juwan escapes yet again. How in the world has this guy not been terminated for cause yet?
He is a legendary figure there, so he is being allowed to resign after the season to take an NBA job. But he has already been terminated.

I hope you’re not expecting anyone to feel sorry for them😂

Oh not at all - if anything, I was hoping you'd all join me in celebrating their bad luck ;)

Although to be fair, I'd rather have them draw a tough schedule when they're actually in contention for something. But with Juwan, that doesn't really seem to be in the cards, so kind of a moot point for now.

Valpo was 11-21 last year which got coach Matt Lottich fired after 7 years.

Team was worse this year - Roger's first year. Hopefully he can turn it around next year. JMO - better chance of sucess at Valpo then at DePaul. Easier schedule. Maybe get some portal kids who are not getting playing time at P5 schools. Not sure who he recruited to Gonzaga 2019-23. If Luke were to leave I suspect he could easily average 20 ppg at Valpo.

In Roger's defense, Illinois went 20-15 in Groce's last year, followed by 14-18 in Brad's first year. Firing a coach has always tended to lead to an exodus of talent, even before the freedom of movement players enjoy today. It's hard to tell the trajectory of a program rebuild after a single season. It takes a couple years to get "your" players, establish an identity, and develop a strong base from which to recruit. I know they didn't have the year they hoped for, but there's usually a reason the previous guy was fired.

I wonder if any of our guys (or Dee) would get a long look at SLU if/when it opens? A10 is feistier than the MAC..

Valpo wasn't very good last year obviously and they did lose Ben Krikke to Iowa in the portal, and he was their best player and the leading scorer in the MVC. That's tough for a first year coach to replace as well especially at a struggling program.
