Love you, Fighter.
I think this whole "Brad is leaving" conversation is silly. Brad would have to be 100% coin-operated to voluntarily leave. ....but I digress.

If Texas decides to get serious about hoops then they will get crazy serious. There is no limit to Texas financial resources.
We're talking ridiculous, game-changing, field-tilting MLB-scale contracts.

Rich Texans might even revel in paying so far above what's reasonable just to say they did it.
Oh for sure ... I am saying this under the assumption that their focus on basketball will remain about what it has been lately. For example, would Kansas lose a coach to Texas? Texas' total athletic revenue of $239 million absolutely dwarfs Kansas' of $118 million (for reference, Illinois is at $146 million) ... but most people would assume the sway of Kansas as a "better job" would win out.

Is Illinois as good of a job as Kansas? I would say of course not. However, Illinois is still a very, very good job, with one of the higher ceilings out there. So, all I am saying is that Texas' immensely deep pockets shouldn't lead to a forgone conclusion that Illinois couldn't fend off Texas as a suitor if we assume that other "great basketball jobs" could. I think Texas is one of the best jobs in the nation precisely because you have immense resources yet surprisingly relaxed expectations (compared to their football fans, anyway); but I think for many coaches, Illinois would be more than good enough to at least compare very favorably to Texas as a basketball destination, and other factors (e.g., being such a far-back second fiddle to football or having less enthusiastic fan support) could go in Illinois' favor to the point that it is a wash.

I’ve used this phrase many times since I first read it here. On virtually every occasion, I’ve gotten cross-eyed looks. It’s a great “turn of a phrase,” and it’s a shame it hasn’t gone viral.
The reason you get crosseyed looks is because it's very old school. I'm 70 and it was considered an old fashioned saying when I was a kid.

I’ll be 70 this month. I’d never heard it before I heard it on this board.

The good news is Illinois' sports revenue is now up to ~$174 million. I'm sure the others have also increased since those numbers came out.

Does Hamer feel like his seat is hot? Does Brad know that fans want a move?

What's impressive about our revenue, too, is that we still have a lagging effect of years of comparatively AWFUL football revenue ... which is the cash cow for most schools. It looks like that figure was from 2022, and we were just $5 million behind programs like Wisconsin, and we were above programs like Nebraska ... all while having an average football attendance of just 43k (just above 70% of capacity), likely at severely discounted ticket prices to our peers.

In other words, Illinois at its "revenue worst" is still quite competitive, and I expect us to move up the rankings significantly as new data is released!

I get that Hamer is in way over his head. And clearly needs to go and should never have been put into this job/role. But, isn't it a bit much to make him the scapegoat for all that ills us?
Of course it is, but this is the internet. It's not the place for well-reasoned, even-handed discourse. This is a place of wild speculation and extreme scapegoating.

Probably, but I don't think anyone has blamed him for us chucking up bad threes... That ills us.

But having thought about it, our inability to get turnovers has limited our points in transition so probably has played a part in some of our poorly chosen shots beyond the arc. We just haven't blamed him yet.

Agreed. The only thing, I'm not sure where you're looking but Nebraska is at $220M. They've been a high revenue dept for some time. Football brings in a boatload at over half of that $220M.

Yes. Fair to pin some on him but once a pattern emerges and isn't addressed, that's management responsibility to fix it, in the short and long term.

(I don't know if this is actually what happened behind the scenes but that's my impression, fair or not).

You could be right and that I'm too focused on him saying "celebrating Christmas". The Syracuse game was played in Brooklyn, so staying one night and that not be exactly Christmas and it's a reasonable request.
What is the travel cost for a night?
15 players 2/room, 2 assistance in a room, 5 coaches with own rooms; 14 rooms * 400/room = 5600
Food @ 100/person for the day * 22 = 2200
$7800

So lets call it 10k for all the things I missed. If you think it is that important, just pay it. You are making 4M/year.

Oh, and you can probably claim it as an unreimbursed business expense, which means the net cost is ~5k.

Is there any chance UNC opens up? Hubert has had some good tournament runs but every year just feels so underwhelming to get there

#847
Still shocking that Carolina is keeping Hubert Davis. Makes me wonder if they don't have the NIL budget to compete like they used to. I can't think of another reason they're accepting mediocrity. Crazy.
He must have photos of "Bubba" in some compromising situations. It's the only logical explanation... The ACC was a one team league this year... Oh how the mighty have fallen.

The whole Willard travel bit seems like "my agent is working the Villanova deal while I have a new one on the table at MD, so I need to come up with something to delay things to buy some time".

Think Willard needs to ditch the suit and tie. Not enough blood flow to his brain with that tie. :)
