Coaching Carousel

Interesting early life and college per Wikipedia:

"Chris Holtmann grew up in Nicholasville, Kentucky. He played high school basketball at Jessamine County High School, and was recruited by NAIA Hall of Fame coach Paul Patterson to play at Taylor University. In 1994, Holtmann earned All-America honors as the captain of Taylor, which hit number one on the NAIA rankings. At Taylor, he played alongside his future boss, John Groce."

8 years at 3 mil per year for AT LEAST their 7th option seems like a lot. Then again, maybe they had to keep the offer up there or they would've ended up even further down the list.

How does the butler opening affect the carousel now? Promote from within or assistants from other places?

They seem to like to stay "in the family". Current assistant Terry Johnson and former assistant Micah Shrewsberry would seem to be logical choices. Although now that they are a higher profile program in a better league, they may look at "outsiders", too.

Not much, Butler will likely promote and assistant from within or outside the program or offer a coach from a smaller program. So no effect to P5 programs. I think bringing back someone like Lavall Jordan from Michigan could work well for them, could help keep recruits and players in the program.

Brad Stevens to Butler. ;)

Not sure if sarcastic (because you added that smile at the end) but I would hate it if this happened. Holtmann has done an amazing job at Butler maintaining their success as a legit high major and would be a great hire for tOSU.

For how sporadic and poorly planned their search seemed so far, it would be lame for them to have Holtmann fall into their lap.

Also my wife is a Butler grad and they are my 2nd favorite team so I don't want to see him go.

Smile as more poking fun at the source part, I have no sources ;)

But my "source" was a Butler who was not too happy.

My wife wishes for this every day.:p

Either your wife went to Butler or you scored a huge hoops fan. When we were 1st married my wife thought the guy at the scorers table was screwing us because we only got 1 point for free throws... and she hates when I tell that story:thumb:

I often feel like the scorers hate us ;)

And she is a Butler alum. She was there during both their recent championship appearances.

Jordan isn't at Michigan anymore. He just got the job at Wisconsin-Milwaukee. But I assume he'd be considered. He was thought to have been #2 when Miller took the job. I would think the following get considered:

Matthew Graves, Micah Shrewsberry (interviewed for UMass so he has college interest), Lavall Jordan, Terry Johnson, Travis Steele, Ronald Nored,
And maybe even Matta and Lickliter.

Would not be surprised if he tries to get Groce. Not that I would want to see that happen, but it would make sense on multiple levels.

I don't see Groce leaving a HC gig at Akron for an assistant job at tOSU. Groce is being well compensated - no need for him to take a step back into an assistant role.

Even if they wanted to, how many schools pay a buyout to hire an assistant coach? Groce's buyout right now would be $1 million.

Holtmann is going to be a major player in Indiana recruiting. IU and the Boilers should be very concerned.

So with the addtions of Miller, Holtmann and Underwood, how would you rank the big ten coaches? and who was the best hire? I'd say we had the best upgrade; but could make the debate that Miller and Holtmann have the best track records right now...

Ranking coaches:
1. Izzo
2.Beilein
3.Turgeon
4. Painter
5. Miller
6. Underwood
7. McCaffery
8. Gard
9. Holtmann
10.Collins
11. Pitino
12. Chambers
13. Piekel
14. Miles

Big Ten has a lot of talented coaches right now, probably the best I've seen in my life time (since 1996)
