So with the addtions of Miller, Holtmann and Underwood, how would you rank the big ten coaches? and who was the best hire? I'd say we had the best upgrade; but could make the debate that Miller and Holtmann have the best track records right now...

Ranking coaches:
1. Izzo
2.Beilein
3.Turgeon
4. Painter
5. Miller
6. Underwood
7. McCaffery
8. Gard
9. Holtmann
10.Collins
11. Pitino
12. Chambers
13. Piekel
14. Miles

Big Ten has a lot of talented coaches right now, probably the best I've seen in my life time (since 1996)

interesting list. my personal list, if i was starting a new college basketball program and could only choose from B1G coaches, would be more like:
1. Izzo
2. Beilein
3. Miller
4. Collins
5. Underwood
6. Pitino
7. Holtmann
8. Turgeon
9. Painter
10. McCaffery
11. Gard
12. Chambers
13. Miles
14. Piekel

Either your wife went to Butler or you scored a huge hoops fan. When we were 1st married my wife thought the guy at the scorers table was screwing us because we only got 1 point for free throws... and she hates when I tell that story:thumb:

Apropos of nothing, I took my wife to a Blackhawks game once. After the 5th or 6th goal scored in the game, she asked, "Who scored that?" I said, "Jeremy Roenick." She then frowned and asked, "Then why does the scoreboard keep flashing "Go Al!"?

The guys behind us let us hear about it all night. :tsk:

I'm still trying to figure out who Homer Un is. They flash his name at almost every baseball game.

I think Chris Holtmann could be a dangerous coach in the B1G and could bring tOSU back to the to the top 4 of the conference if he can recruit well. I am hoping that Butler/the Big East was just the right flavor, size, and scope for him and that is why he succeeded there. Maybe tOSU will be too much for him...hopefully.

I would have been happy if we had gotten Holtman. Matta did well at tOSU but, think Holtman will also. Doesn't make it any easier for us to get back to the top.

8. Gard

11. Gard

My opinion is that you guys are underrating Gard. I think he's shown he's pretty darn good. But this stuff is entirely subjective. No wrong answer. I can't even rank them. It's too hard.

It was tough putting Gard so low, mostly because of his inexperience as a head coach. Goes to show how many great coaches are in this league.

8 years (!!!), $3 mil per season. Seems like 5 years used to be the standard for a new coach, then it went to 6 recently. I guess when you're hiring in June, have to do a little better.

The $3 MM seems to be right in line with the Big Ten coaches, but the 8 years is reflective that right now the OSU roster is a dumpster fire. Holtmann demanded at least two more years up front in order to right the ship, figuring that if they can him 3 years in, at least he has lifetime security.

Very smart move by Holtmann.

In reality, comparing people of this list is so difficult because each of these coaches has made it to rarified air in their profession. How do you separate top surgeons?

What makes the difference in regards to these coaches are their relative success is: support from administration, luck in recruiting, luck in hiring difference makers on the coaching staff, luck in dealing with injuries, luck keeping kids out of jail.....

However, when you look at a guy like Izzo and the sustained success he has had, it's obvious that he has been more than lucky.

At the bottom of the list you look at guys who were "Peter Principled," in other words, they got promoted to a level of incompetence.....the guys who were out over their skis.....like John Groce.

Interview with Groce on Holtmann and Thad:

How Chris Holtmann is like Thad Matta, from a coach who knows both well

Groce unwittingly admits one of the reasons he failed at Illinois - hiring assistants for loyalty over competence:

"I used to sit right behind Thad on the bus whenever we traveled," Groce said in a phone interview Friday. "I wanted someone sitting behind me on the bus that I knew not only (was loyal) to Ohio University, but that also had a loyalty that the last thing they wanted to do was not see the person sitting in front of them be successful."

First off, I'm pretty sure there have been reports of rifts between players and Gard. To me, this year will show his true coaching chops (we've seen how well an incompetent coach can be given a decent roster). They lost some of the most experienced players to ever be on a team together.

Thanks for sharing this... I think it's pretty easy to sum up Groce's tenure here in one word--Stubbornness. Seems he also sees how loyalty and "tradition" can come to bite you, wish he could've realized that 3 years ago. I've wondered if that first year here gave him too big of a head. OK, dead horse beating over.

What's the Oscar part? Have they dubbed him Oscar the grouch for that face he makes? If so, well played

I asked a goemaw friend about this. It's the must Brucey story I've ever heard:

So, apparently, at some point Bruce did some sort of team-building exercise, or whatever, and it involved Sesame Street. Certain players were assigned names from the show, and Bruce was Oscar.

Again, that's hearsay, but it's what I was told. It sounds like something Bruce would do at least. =P
